13.01.2022 Do you know an outstanding citizen or student science and monitoring program on the Victorian coast? Nominate a project now making a major contribution to the understanding and long-term management and protection of coastal and/or marine environments. 2010 Winner - Reef Life Survey - Reef Life Survey is a volunteer-based marine science and conservation program. It provides an avenue for committed members of the recreational SCUBA diving community to actively work towards marine conservation goals, while expanding their knowledge and awareness of marine systems and environmental issues.

13.01.2022 Congratulations to the 2018 Victorian Coastal Awards winners! The Victorian Coastal Council hosted the awards last Thursday 17 May, which recognise and celebrate the efforts and achievements of individuals, groups and organisations in protecting and enhancing Victoria’s unique marine and coastal environment. Over 220 guests from volunteer groups, committees of management, non-governmental organisations and state agencies attended the awards ceremony at Encore in St Kilda.... Minister Lily D'Ambrosio presented the winners, selected from finalists across seven categories. This year’s awards attracted a diverse and impressive list of nominations, with 55 submissions for projects and initiatives from across the entirety of Victoria’s unique coastline. 12.01.2022 Congratulations to EstuaryWatch Victoria, winners of the Victorian Coastal Award 2018 for 'Community Engagement'. For over 10 years, EstuaryWatch volunteers have contributed vital citizen science data informing decision making in waterway management in Victoria. EstuaryWatch Victoria has earned a reputation amongst government agencies, researchers and coastal communities as a trusted source of information on the condition of Victoria’s estuaries and its volunteers are knowledgeable advocates for local estuaries.

10.01.2022 Today is International Biodiversity Day - What better day to congratulate the 2018 winners of the 'Biodiversity Conservation' category in the Victorian Coastal Awards!? The Gippsland Lakes Migratory and Shore Bird Habitat Restoration project was recognised for the unique collaboration between natural resource managers, waterway managers and community volunteers in creating critical habitat for bird life! Well done also to the finalists: The Nature Conservancy (Restoring Lost Shellfish Reefs Port Phillip Bay) and Friends of the Hooded Plover Far West Victoria/BirdLife Australia

07.01.2022 Nominate now for the Victorian Coastal Awards - Biodiversity Conservation category - recognising outstanding contribution to enhancing, conserving and protecting coastal and marine ecosystems and species. In 2011 Birdlife Australia (@BirdlifeOz) were recognised for their Beach Nesting Birds Project - The project actively protects Hooded Plover breeding sites on the Victorian coast, empowering community groups to take the lead and conserve this flagship species. "Hoodies" are an excellent indicator of healthy beaches where recreation is balanced with the needs of resident species.

06.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS to the Project Banjo Action Group, Victorian Fisheries Authority, FutureFish, Boating Industry Association Victoria and Fishcare for winning the 'Planning and Management' category for their amazing collaborative project 'Safeguarding Stingrays'! A high-profile community conversation was initiated via social and print media, radio and an online petition that attracted 33,000 signatures! The project resulted in the introduction of new rules providing increased protection for rays across with practical education and enforcement solutions in place. Well done!

04.01.2022 Congratulations to the winners of the 'Improving the Physical Environment' category - Kingston City Council for the new Mordialloc Life Saving Club and Aboriginal Gathering Place! Mordialloc Life Saving Club has a long history in the City of Kingston, with the original Club forming in 1919. Facilities were aging and could no longer adequately serve the growing Club and broader community. A new state of the art facility was developed, replacing the existing facility, and providing multiple benefits to the local community and visitors. The new Gathering Place offers the Kingston Koorie Mob a sense of belonging and community. City of Kingston

02.01.2022 The Victorian Coastal Awards saw joint winners recognised in the 'Research and Monitoring' category in 2018. Deakin University, Parks Victoria, The University of Melbourne were celebrated for their Victorian Marine Park Habitat Mapping and Monitoring partnership. The award recognises the wealth of research training opportunities provided by the partnership, which includes training of 7 PhD, 1 Masters and 4 Honours students. For 40 years, the Victorian Wader Study Group has co...nducted high quality, long-term scientific research on international migration routes, annual breeding success, population monitoring and the ecology of many migratory waders and key resident species like oystercatchers and crested terns. The Group’s long-term dedication to research and publication, its co-operative working relationships with land managers and international peers, represent citizen science at its best. Congratulations to both winners for their ongoing contribution to improving understanding and management of Victoria's unique marine and coastal environments
