24.01.2022 We still desperately need foster carers for kittens aged 4wks+. Can you help?? Follow the link below.

24.01.2022 Goodnight everybody... Sid & Nancy continue to fight on. Even improving... if only slightly. Rest well to continue the fight tomorrow.

22.01.2022 We've been a bit quiet lately... But that's not to say we haven't been busy! As the shelters and rescues become full to kittens once again, we all work beyond our capabilities to try to help the littlies and give them warmth, comfort and full bellies. Rescue is rarely without its hiccups as all who foster or help out in any way would know.... So this is a shout out to all who put in so much effort to help raise and save the many stray, un-owned and abandoned cats and kittens throughout Victoria. You're doing a great job and thank you. Maybe there will be a day rescues aren't needed. It won't be soon. But we can hope. Thank you to every rescue, animal shelter, foster carer or member of the public who cares enough to act. For your efforts, the voiceless have a voice.

20.01.2022 LEROY & GINGER BABIES Our little man Leroy has been feeling under the weather the past couple of days. Thankfully the team at PETstock Vet Waurn Ponds are on the case and after hanging out in the clinic for a brief period, he's going home with some medications to hopefully help him feel more himself. ... Diarrhea in kittens can lead to saddening outcomes if action isn't taken fast! Our dedicated foster carers are diligently caring for him through this bought of illness and fingers crossed, he'll pull through well. He's a little purr machine and made lots of bikkies the whole ride home. He wasn't the only one to visit the vet for diarrhea today - we've also had our 5 little 4 week old gingers in today for bloody diarrhea. We're hoping we can nail down the cause of their unwellness but realistically, the list of possibilities is extensive. We will try our hardest to help these little ones push through. If you can, please help us by donating to contribute to the costs of the treatment Leroy & our little litter of gingers. We need your support through times like this - it's awful seeing our little ones so unwell. For information on how to donate, please visit our webpage https://www.victorianeonatalkittenproject.com.au/donate We can't thank you enough for your support while we do our best to help our kittens push through this.

18.01.2022 Another day, another hospitalisation. Paige has been feeling under the weather. With a temperature, vomiting and difficulties feeding - she's spending the day with the team at PETstock Vet Waurn Ponds who are dedicated to supporting our kittens to wellness. A BIG THANK YOU to the vets, nurses and carers who spend so much time and energy in caring and medically supporting the littlies. ... It's often hard and heartbreaking work and we wouldn't be able to take in any kittens without the hard work of everybody involved. To donate to VNKP & help cover Paige, Albie & Daria's medical bills, visit www.victorianeonatalkittenproject.com.au/donate

17.01.2022 Oh Daria... Can I be where you are right now?! Hump day = nap day.... Oh, what are we kidding... EVERY DAY is nap day when you're a kitten, running ragged and playing with friends all day can leave a little kitten... A bit sleepy.

16.01.2022 KITTEN SEASON HAS BEGUN 1 INVESTIGATIVE SURGERY, 1 HEAVILY UNDERDEVELOPED KITTEN, 5 LITTERS & a LOT of VET FEES! Victoria Neonatal Kitten Project... Facebook.com/victorianeonatalkittenproject www.victorianeonatalkittenproject.com.au Since Saturday, we've been inundated with requests for rescue, assistance or surrender. Most, if not all of these kittens will go through treatment for Upper Respiratory Infection as well as other complications which are a regular occurrence in rescue kittens. Malop is a sweet young man, around 4 weeks old. He was being relocated by Mumma cat on Saturday during the storm. Mum got spooked and didn't return. Malop came in with some mild mobility issues. Something just 'wasn't right'. His hind legs were mimicking 'swimmer's syndrome' on intake, but since he's been in care, his mobility has improved drastically and continuing with physical therapy including 'cycling' with his little peets and targeted massage, he should have no impact on his quality of life into the future. On Sunday, we got a message from a regional shelter, seeking rescue for 7 kittens/3 litters. Stacey is a sassy little queen and will surely grow to be the most cuddly cat you could find. Already throwing herself against walls for head-bonks and pats, following treatment for URI & severe parasite burden, Stacey will be desexed. Steve, Daria & Jane are a litter who've also come in with URI signs. Daria has been malnourished and we suspect something underlying going on as she's less than a THIRD of her siblings' weight. Daria will need intense care for the next few weeks and months to get her caught up to her siblings in weight and size (if that's even possible). Daria will become high-rise over the next few days if she doesn't begin gaining weight. We are taking action to supplement her diet and attempt to help her to stack on weight. In addition to this, we've taken in a sweet kitten from surrender experiencing medical complications, her kidney is incredibly enlarged and she is going into surgery today to explore the potential cause of her illness. This kitten will need hospitalisation and intensive care in a foster home with an experienced veterinary nurse for a while until she's ready to socialise with other kittens. She will then be re-introduced to some new friends and re-learn how to be a kitten after all the human hands she will encounter over the next few - she'll be hanging for a play once she's well again! This has been a HUGE start to intake for the rescue, and yet not surprising. Like other rescues who take on kittens, we're seeing the seasons start earlier and earlier. The kittens we have in care right now are ALL in need of treatment. This will be a costly venture but finances should NEVER mean the death of an animal. We will do everything we can to help rehab and provide medical support to all kittens in our care. Whilst our intake has begun, this is only a tiny portion of the total animals we will take in and support to health this kitten season. PLEASE, if you can afford to, we are requesting financial donations for the URGENT and ESSENTIAL treatment necessary to SAVE THE LIVES of these beautiful little kittens who deserve our time and effort just as any family member does. We are expecting the cost of MISTY's surgery alone to exceed $1500, with no guarantee that she will survive. Misty is VERY unwell and whilst we will do everything, she needs to help us fight this fight too. Diagnostics and medical support for DARIA over the next 2 weeks will likely exceed $600, given her intensely rough start. On top of regular expenses for desexing, vaccinating and microchipping. Rescue is hard and without generous people like you, who support us, we couldn't possibly do it all. Our donation goal for Misty's Surgery & Kitten Season Launch 2020 is $2500. This will cover the cost of any surgery and diagnostics necessary over the next 2 weeks and will be put towards a gift card to be held at PETstock Vet Waurn Ponds to cover the cost of any treatment necessary. Thank you for your time, we will to give regular updates on the health status of both Misty & Daria. Jess - Victoria Neonatal Kitten Project

15.01.2022 It's been a hard time here at VNKP. Yesterday we lost our little fighter, Albie. He was scheduled for a faecal transplant the following day to attempt to kickstart his GI system which hadn't coped with weaning and had regular episodes of lethargy and diarrhea. Our carers put in a lot of emotional and physical energy into saving each of the kittens who come into care with VNKP. ... One of the hardest parts of taking in the small and vulnerable is that it's rarely a smooth foster experience. Most of our carers are up overnight administering medications and fluids to help the kittens in their care to overcome what life has already thrown at them. Today we will likely have to say another goodbye, and who knows what tomorrow will bring. Whatever comes, we will give every life who seeks shelter with us every opportunity possible to both survive and thrive. We won't give up until the day comes where we're no longer needed. Every life is precious, every life is worth the fight. Photo: Daria - our beautiful girl who's doing well but we remain cautiously optimistic.

13.01.2022 "HELP!" "I found a kitten!!" What should you do if you find a kitten, a litter of kittens or a stray Queen with kittens... STOP! Don’t touch the kitten yet! Assess the kitten from a distance and if possible keep watch for Mum - she’s probably coming back soon! If you’re confident Mum will not be returning, place the kitten in a box/basket/carrier with a heat pack to keep kitty warm. Contact your nearest veterinary clinic or animal shelter/pound - all animals over 8-weeks old MUST be taken to the council pound for 8-day hold if the owner is unable to be found from the microchip. Please DO NOT attempt to feed the kitten cow's milk or supermarket kitten milk. If the kitten/s are under 6-weeks old and orphaned, contact us ASAP and we’ll coordinate transport to get the little one safe as fast as possible. https://www.victorianeonatalkittenproject.com.au/found-kitt To donate to the medical care and husbandry of orphaned and vulnerable neonatal kittens, visit https://www.facebook.com/donate/582433399011186/?fundraiser_source=external_url

12.01.2022 Kitten season has well and truly begun! Don't forget - don't touch kittens until you're sure that Mumma cat is no longer around. If you need assistance or have any queries, PM us or Text us and we'll help in any way we can. Please don't kit-nap kittens this kitten season! They are much more likely to survive and thrive with Mum. With or without Mumma, we will help you to do what's in kitten's best interest.

10.01.2022 FOSTER CARERS NEEDED ORPHANED KITTENS & MUMS & BUBS Hi all! 06.01.2022 We've got hungry bellies in care! We're desperate for donations of kitten food, litter, formula and other supplies. If you're able to donate anything to help please PM us for drop off address or to organise pick up of donations.... 06.01.2022 To say the least, it's been a busy couple of weeks. Daria & Malop have made it well and truly and are almost ready to move on to their forever homes. On Sunda...y we took in a young Mum and her 5x 6 week old kittens. When picked her and her babies up, we noticed she's very likely already pregnant with her next litter. It's too early to tell for sure at this stage but we will give her and her bubs some time to settle in and nourish themselves before we make the choice of how to proceed. On Wednesday we took in 2x 5 day old kittens with severe CLEFT PALATE. These two have been dubbed Sid and Nancy and are going to have a very difficult time as they grow. We will make them comfortable and give them the love, veterinary treatment and medical support that we can (regular Oxygen therapy and tube feeding at the minimum) to help them get the best shot at making it through this vulnerable stage of live. We're desperate for an oxygen concentrator & incubator/humidicrib to support these two vulnerable lives but will make do with what we have until we can acquire these. On Thursday we had a message about 3x 4wk old kittens also needing rescue. We're incredibly grateful to the finder who transported the kittens to us. These 3 are fiesty beans who will require extra attention to ensure they're socialised, ready to move onto their forever homes once they've had all their vet work and grow! We are being inundated with rescue requests and it isn't even Summer yet! All of these kittens and Mumma will have been at risk having entered the pound system. For different reasons whether underage, failing to thrive, insufficient resources or overcrowding. Our presence and action means that these kittens can find safety and comfort with us. Every life is worth it and watching the spirit and energy of the two kittens with cleft palate push through so much, shows why we're here and why we're needed. Please help us support some of the most vulnerable lives in rescue. Every donation helps and our vet bills are stacking up and we have a lot of hungry mouths to feed. If you can't donate, please LIKE & SHARE. https://www.paypal.com/donate/ Tip: select 'Donate with a Card' if you don't have Paypal

05.01.2022 A great initiative which has been saving lives and changing the outcome for owned entire cats and kittens in Geelong. It's evident the effect of community desexing initiatives - if you know an undesexed kitten or cat, let the pet parent know! There's help out there to prevent unwanted and unnecessary litters.

04.01.2022 DONATE VIA FACEBOOK OR VISIT OUR PAGE TO DONATE VALUABLE SUPPLIES Our mission is to provide best-standard care in rehabilitating and rehoming orphaned or vulnerable neonatal kittens. Educating the community, foster carers and rescue groups about cat and kitten husbandry, enrichment and medical support. ... All donations go towards providing routine and emergency medical care and purchasing husbandry supplies like formula, litter, flea and worming treatments to support our kittens in fighting against the odds. Donations of supplies and second-hand equipment are also relied upon to help VNKP feed and provide medical support to our foster kittens. All donations are distributed to our carers and all those unsuitable for use by us will be tranported to other rescues. Visit www.victorianeonatalkittenproject.com.au for more information. Thank you for your time and interest in our project. We couldn't do it without you.

04.01.2022 MEET OUR NEWEST RECRUITS WARNING: CUTENESS OVERLOAD This litter were found on one of those freezing days throughout the week. We were called by a concerned member of the public who had found 4 kittens and weren't able to find Mum. On the freezing night, with Mum anywhere but nearby, they took them in and called us. When the intake team got the new beans to warmth and safety, 2 of the kittens were noticeably cold and dull. After hours of Fading Kitten Protocol incl...uding sub-cutaneous fluids, gradual warming & electrolyte supplementation, all kittens made it through to the next morning and looked promising. Unfortunately 3 days after intake, one of the Calico beans made a turn for the worse and the VNKP Team & the amazing team at PETstock Vet Waurn Ponds tried their hardest to help her fight. After 18 hours of fighting HARD, we chose to let her rest. We suspect that the bean's body couldn't cope with the severe parasite burden OR potential underlying illness/infectious disease contracted from the Queen cause her small body to fail. It's hard to know for sure but we know she was in a comfortable place as she passed and we do all we can with what we know and what we have. RIP little Gretchen Otherwise, Regina (Calico), Cady (Tori) & Josh (Black) are doing well and thriving in care. Josh suffered some small laceration which is causing us mild concern but we will monitor and make the right choice for him, whether to keep the tail. We're hopeful that will be able to keep his tail but he will always have a cute wonky bend in it as he grows into a man. These kittens are roughly 9 days old and will NOT be available for adoption until they are desexed, vaccinated and microchipped - which may be from anywhere between 8-16 weeks old. If you'd like to donate to help provide essential veterinary care to the orphaned neonates who come our way, please head to www.victorianeonatalkittenproject.com.au/donate ALL financial donations go to the medical and daily care of orphaned and vulnerable neonatal kitten. We value donation of consumables, kitten food, litter and general care items just as much! Check out our Donate webpage for more info on sending us medical and general supplies. Thank you for your support and donations. We couldn't possibly do it without you!

03.01.2022 Convenience killing in pounds and shelters has a very real human toll. Vets who are expected to end the lives of healthy animals. Shelter staff who must take th...ese animals to the euthanasia room. I have spoken to many of these people and they are also victims of a broken system. Most people look for work at shelters because they are driven by a deep love of animals and a desire to help. Instead, they end up in despair at the role they are forced to play in endless killing, day in and day out. As a result, vets and shelter staff often develop mental health issues such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. They have higher rates of suicide than the general population. The individual, societal, and economic cost of all this trauma has never been calculated. As one vet said, Euthanasia of healthy animals goes against everything you became a vet for. I feel guilty as I didn’t sign up for this and I know they deserve better and it’s our fault. It kills me a little bit every time I put them down. WE NEED CHANGE. Unless we drive down kill rates, shelter animals will continue to die needlessly, and humans will keep suffering as well. Please share the petition to stop convenience killing of shelter animals before it closes tomorrow. Scroll all the way to the bottom where it says "Click here to sign" (Petition 180). Only Victorians may sign: https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au//view-e-p/details/12/192 I'm sorry for the graphic photo below but this is what shelter vets deal with on a daily basis (shared by another vet).

02.01.2022 RESCUE NEVER ENDS - PLEASE DONATE Update: MISTY Unfortunately, whilst Misty was in surgery it was determined that her right kidney would have to be removed and whilst searching for the left, hopefully viable kidney, Misty left to the rainbow bridge. The amazing team at PETstock Vet Waurn Ponds tried everything possible to save her but after being unable to find a viable kidney, for her to push through the surgery would have been little to no quality of life.... This has been a difficult experience for everybody at Victoria Neonatal Kitten Project and PETstock Vet Waurn Ponds and even through we weren't able to bring Misty home today, there are still vet bills to be paid and more kittens awaiting intake! Rescue never ends. In fact, this is just the beginning. PLEASE DONATE to help us pay for medical/veterinary expenses for the coming months. Daria and all the rest of the kittens are still in care being loved and chonked up so that we can attempt some diagnostics to determine the potential cause of Daria's small size. We will update when we can, and a sincere THANK YOU to those who support us in all that we do!
