24.01.2022 Most might know it as Cup day, but we think today should be trophy day! While the throughbreds are thundering around Flemington, there’s horses of a very different kind in Melbourne’s family fishing lakes. Our huge stonker rainbow trout are still out there and are a perfect reason to head to your nearest lake and safely wet a line with the family.... And if your home track is in regional Victoria and you’re lucky enough to score some time off, we’ve recently stocked more stonkers into three spots on the Goulburn River between Eildon and Yea. Catch one, and you’re odds on to make a memory that’ll last a lifetime! #icaughtastonker #melbournecup #fishingmelbourne
24.01.2022 Look at these little guys! The eggs we recently harvested from the Murray cod nesting boxes have hatched. At the moment, they’re being fed brine shrimp, or as you might fondly remember from your childhood days - sea monkeys! ... Soon they’ll be ready to go back outside to our plankton ponds where they’ll feed onyou guessed it! Plankton. Your fishing licence fees are what makes this all happen. 23.01.2022 Yellas, cod, EPs, Aussie bass Victoria’s rivers are home to an awesome assortment of native fish. And we’re helping you learn more about them and providing better habitat in which they can thrive, thanks to your fishing licence fees. The Native Fish Report Cards project is one of 10 to score funding in the 2019/20 round of rec fishing grants, extending the program for a further two years.... To view the program’s findings so far, head to www.nativefishreportcard.org.au It sees our freshwater fisheries crew working closely with researchers from the Arthur Rylah Institute (pictured) to survey 9 native freshwater species in some of Victoria’s favourite rivers. This gives us unprecedented native fish population health data, and gives you insights as to where you’re likely to have fish on the chew. Presented in report cards, the data shows the current health of native fisheries as well as how they’re being improved for future years. The Goulburn, Ovens, Lindsay/Mullaroo, Gellibrand, Glenelg, Mitchell, Thomson/Macalister and Wimmera rivers are surveyed as part of the program, along with the Gunbower Creek. 22.01.2022 As of this morning, George the tagged cod is swimming around the Nagambie Lakes! So are a few others! Are they carrying a $2,000 tag or a $10,000 one? You’ll just have to catch George and his mates to find out once cod season opens on Tuesday of next week, 1 December.... The expanded Golden Tag competition is supporting regional tourism businesses that have done it tough this year by encouraging fishers to get out there, wet a line and stay awhile. 21.01.2022 Got plans for cod opening tomorrow? Well they might be about to change cos there are now two more places to chase a tagged cod or yella worth up to $10,000. Rocklands Reservoir in the west and the Goulburn River, downstream of Nagambie, are now home to Golden Tagged fish.... Our Golden Tag competition is all about encouraging recreational fishers to cast a line in regional Victoria to help tourism businesses that have done it tough in 2020. 20.01.2022 Rock lobster season opens next month on 16 November, so it’s time to get prepared and order your tags! The new 2020/21 season tags are white and can be ordered for FREE using the Vic RL Tag app, which can be downloaded from the App Store or Google Play. Still got your old green tags? They can be recycled, no problem!
18.01.2022 For a fish known to be pretty mysterious, blackfish sure do love a selfie! A project funded by your fishing licence fees is using innovative cameras to monitor the movements of these often elusive native fish. The cameras are placed in specially designed spawning habitat in the hope of encouraging river blackfish to visit as part of their spawning process.... During a recent deployment of the cameras, footage shows 3 fish popping in for a look around the habitat placed in Loves Creek near Colac. The researchers from Deakin University are working on further upgrades to the cameras, which would see them deployed for up to a month at a time and take a photo every minute during breeding season. Blackfish primarily breed during spring and into summer, which is why the closed season south of the divide runs from 1 September to 31 December each year. Researchers have had help along the way from a variety of partners, including landholders who trialled the cameras on their properties. #yourfishinglicencefeesatwork #riverblackfish

18.01.2022 Rock on! We’re creating a solid foundation for the new rocky reefs in and around Corio Bay. Work’s begun on moving 2,000 tonnes of locally-sourced basalt to begin construction of the three new reefs. The basalt has been donated by the Community Safety Building Authority from the site of the new Youth Justice Facility which is under construction at Cherry Creek, near Werribee.... The basalt will form the base layer of the reefs, which will be installed at 3 locations near Geelong thanks to Target One Million. A reef at St Helens will provide a spot for land and boat-based fishers to cast to, while offshore sites at Kirk Point and Outer Harbour will also score this fish habitat boost. Each site will have a series of 5-6 reefs installed, with the basalt and 100 tonnes of local limestone forming the main structure before the reefs are seeded with recycled shells covered in oyster and mussel spat. They’ll improve water quality and ecological productivity, and give you more access to the snapper, King George whiting and calamari that call this area home! 16.01.2022 Four lakes have shared in more than 26,000 trout this week to make your freshwater fishing even better! The fish were stocked into: Lake Eildon 10,000 brown trout... Lake Hume 10,000 browns Lake Fyans 1,000 browns & 2,000 rainbows Lake Cartcarrong 2,500 browns & 1,000 rainbows These fish will be catchable size inside 12 months, although all 4 of these waters have been stocked in previous years so already contain catchable size trout. Thanks to the Ballarat Fly Fishers Club, James Pfarrer from Lakeside Angling Club and Shane Young from Stawell Tackle & Marine for their help. Also a big thanks to Stephen Varga from Sunshine Fly Casting Club for helping to coordinate the effort and the Lake Fyans Holiday Park for the use of their boat ramp. Remember it’s important to stay safe when you wet a line. You can fish with up to 10 people, but you should be able to keep a safe distance from one another, wear a fitted face mask and minimise the sharing of equipment. If you’re in metropolitan Melbourne, you must also stay within 25km of home if you’re planning to try your luck this weekend. And don’t forget there are still plenty of stonker rainbows on the bite around Melbourne’s family fishing lakes, too. #fishinglicencefeesatwork #target1million
16.01.2022 No one ever looks forward to a holiday ending, but one lucky fisher has enjoyed a dream final day of a getaway landing a $2,000 bream as part of our Golden Tag competition! Brett Barrow recently spent two weeks in Mallacoota and Lakes Entrance. A keen fisher, he didn’t get the chance to wet a line while on holiday so on the way home to Traralgon, he stopped in at a favourite spot on the Tambo to try his luck for a few hours. He’d landed three nice bream of around 40cm when he... hooked up a fourth. In netting it, he spotted the tag and wondered what it was. He gave it a clean and got an almighty surprise, given he knew a bit about Golden Tag being launched earlier this year but hadn’t thought about it since. The tagged bream was about 30cm, and took one of Brett’s trusty shrimp as bait. Brett said he hadn’t been to Mallacoota before and the reason for the visit was to support the community after a tough run in 2020. He said the scenery and the friendly locals made it more than a worthwhile trip, and encouraged anyone thinking about heading down there to get their skates on! We couldn’t agree more Brett, which is precisely why we’ve expanded Golden Tag to get fishers and their families out and about, exploring all of what regional Victoria has to offer. 13.01.2022 Now this is a pretty solid Maccas run! A tagged Macquarie perch recently recaptured has been on quite the adventure over 3 years, according to our mates at the Arthur Rylah Institute. Keith Martin recently reeled in this Macca while fishing Lake Dartmouth. He recorded the number of the tag, its details, then let the fish swim free. ... ARI researchers had this particular fish in their database, which showed it was tagged in November 2017 at 37cm. Keith measured the fish at 40cm when he caught it and the ARI crew say many Maccas of this size are about 30 years old! Keith reported the tag was dirty and hard to read, understandable given it’d been swimming around for 3 years since it last had a clean. This particular Macca was caught by Keith at almost the opposite end of the dam from where ARI had initially tagged it. Research shows Maccas can make this run in only a matter of days. With nearly 10 years of data on this fascinating native fish, we’re learning more about Maccas with every recapture and it’s all helping ensure they’re around for future generations. #maccas #nativefish #ARIresearch

12.01.2022 Do you see what I see? Maybe zoom in, or move your phone closer But not that close! These well-camouflaged fry are brown trout, which have been stocked into a tributary of the King River as part of a trial supporting the Victorian Wild Trout Strategy. As you can see they blend in pretty well with their surroundings right now, but in years to come we hope they’ll grow far bigger and help to sustain the wild population.... We’ve assisted the Australian Trout Foundation Inc to stock 50,000 of these little beauties into a stream that, like many at the moment, was flowing strong. In coming weeks stockings will take place in the Nariel Creek near Corryong, in further trials focussing on an area affected by summer’s bushfires. The strategy was led by ATF and is part of the Victorian Wild Trout Management Program, which is being implemented thanks to your fishing licence fees. #yourfishinglicencefeesatwork #wildtrout #fishstocking
12.01.2022 The sun is shining and can you see it glint off the Rocklands gold??!!! This 3lb perfect yella was caught by Samantha Spence fishing with her legend husband Chris Spence. It was nailed on a Cutting edge, 55m Tomohawke lure, green and gold. Still in its gob. It was released with a smile after a couple of pics. Together we started a dream in 2017 to make Rocklands one of the best native fisheries in Australia - well we are so proud to say it is happening. Massive shout out to... Rob Loats @vrfish and David Kramer @talkingfishingtv for their incredible support. To all the Balmoral club members who fought so hard for this. To everybody who buys a Rec Fishing Licence and the T1M team, who have funded this incredible stocking story. You made this happen. If you build it, they will come. Balmoral will boom in the coming years as people come from across Victoria and Australia to fish what will be an incredible fishery. In the last 4 years we have stocked over 600,000 yellas and 1.4 million cod into Rocklands. The yellas are now up to 1.5kg and 3lb. Incredible growth rates. Once restrictions ease make Rocklands your summer plans. Lots of camping around the edges, easy boat launching and grab your tucker and fuel in town. 12.01.2022 The spring sun and snapper season are seeing large numbers of fishers flocking to Port Phillip to enjoy Victoria’s most popular fishery. And while it’s great to see so many families out safely enjoying their time on the water, our officers are out making sure people are doing the right thing. Recently officers have received numerous reports via the 13 FISH reporting hotline of illegal fishing in the Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary, near Beaumaris. ... Fisheries Officers have responded by patrolling this area using both marked and unmarked boats and jet-skis and a large number of infringement notices have been issued. Investigations are continuing to identify further possible offending by boaters that left the marine protected area prior to officers being able to speak with them. Fishers should always familiarise themselves with marine park boundaries before they leave home. The VFA’s VicFishing app also features a Can I Fish Here? function, which uses your phone’s GPS location to determine whether you are within a marine park or sanctuary. The app also contains a digital copy of the recreational fishing guide, so you can stay across bag and catch limits whenever and wherever you’re fishing. The app can be downloaded free from the App Store or Google Play: www.vfa.vic.gov.au/vicfishingapp As always, if you suspect illegal fishing is taking place at any time, ring our 24/7 reporting hotline, 13 FISH (13 3474), to speak directly to a Fisheries Officer. 10.01.2022 Things are heating up down at The Warmies! One of Melbourne’s best loved fishing spots now has a new fish cleaning table to ensure your catch is ready to cook when you arrive home. Minister for Fishing and Boating Melissa Horne MP popped down recently with Newport and District Angling Club Colin Wilkinson to see just how good the new table is!... The $32,000 upgrade is thanks to a Target One Million commitment to deliver 5 new and upgraded fish cleaning facilities across Victoria by July next year. The Warmies work has delivered a new under cover shelter and lighting to make it easy to use day or night. Tailor, salmon, flathead and even the majestic mulloway can be targeted from the Warmies long rock walls. The nearby Sandy Point Nature Reserve and plenty of car parking means it’s a great spot to safely wet a line with the family. The table will also be ideal for those using the boat ramp to target Port Phillip’s snapper fishery. Construction on the upgrade project was overseen by the Hobsons Bay City Council. #target1million #fishingmelbourne #fishingvictoria

Fisheries Officers from the Wodonga station report that yellas between 45-50cm have been on the chew lately. When they come to the surface, they’re sometimes followed by 2-3 similar sized fish. We know why, too. Lake Hume has been stocked with nearly 2.5 million golden perch fingerlings over the past 20 years! That’s a lot of yellas. ... It was severely damaged in storms last year, but has now been upgraded to include better berthing for boats and a brand new pier head, offering spectacular views and land-based snapper fishing at the end of the 220-metre-long pier. A further $24 million is also being invested in other piers around the state at places like Altona, Portarlington, Queenscliff, Middle Brighton and Flinders.
07.01.2022 Our fisheries scientists have begun their annual King George whiting surveys at 8 shallow seagrass sites around Port Phillip. The surveys have been conducted since 1998 and are a reliable indicator of future whiting stocks. For the last 3-4 months, these tiny whiting have made an incredible journey.... Likely to have been born off south-east South Australia, they have been carried by currents for hundreds of kilometres eastwards, past the krill, bait schools, whales and southern bluefin tuna off our coast, before settling in our bays and inlets. These little whiting grow rapidly and will reach the minimum length of 27cm in the summer of 2022/23. They’ll stay in Port Phillip until they’re about 4 years of age before migrating out to sea where they mature and spawn, thereby completing the King George whiting life cycle. We’ve had good numbers of juvenile whiting in our surveys for 4 years running, meaning the outlook for our whiting fisheries is fantastic. Fingers crossed for a 5th! #science #portphillip #whiting
05.01.2022 Our Fisheries Officers are busy around the bay at the moment, but they do get time for the odd happy snap(per)! This is Philip, one of our officers from Queenscliff. 04.01.2022 A recent fishing trip isn't one Alex Georgopolous will forget anytime soon cos this fish has pocketed him a cool $10,000! He caught the tagged brown trout at Lake Purrumbete, near Camperdown, at 8.30am on Sunday using a fly he tied himself called The Inducer, fished fast on a sinking line. None of Alex’s mates had accepted his invitation to join them on the overnight trip, but he was quickly sending a video of his fish to one of them. ... Check the tag mate, check it properly, it could be one of those golden tags was the suggestion over the phone from Stu. Sure enough Stu was right and the fish was a winner! Alex has fished Purrumbete a lot over the years with his last brown a 9lb thumper, caught on the same fly as this prize-winning fish. He loves the scenery and the chance of a trophy fish at any moment. Alex plans to spend his winnings on more fishing trips around country Victoria. Lots of people have done it hard this year, so what better way to spend the money than with the people in the country who need a hand. We agree Alex and that’s exactly the aim of the Golden Tag competition, which recommenced recently and expanded beyond bushfire affected areas in the North East and Gippsland. 01.01.2022 You’ve gotta love when a new spot delivers the goods on your first visit. Not only did Borce Petreski’s new fishing spot deliver plenty of fish, he left it $2,000 richer! Borce lives in Melbourne’s northern suburbs and regularly goes up to the Goulburn River on a day off. This time his cousin suggested they try a new spot, just near the bridge at Thornton.... Arriving about 9am they fished from the bank, Borce casting a spinner and enjoying perfect weather conditions. It’s a nice part of the river, nice calm stretches of water and the weather was very good so it was quite relaxing until we landed the fish! They’d been fishing for 30 minutes or so when Borce landed their first fish of the day. He didn’t have his glasses on, and just thought it was a nice looking rainbow. But his cousin was onto the glimmer of a golden tag and told him to check it to see if he was a winner and after closer inspection Borce was in luck! Borce has been fishing for most of his life after growing up close to a lake in his native Macedonia, but admits he has never caught a fish quite like this one! We had a variety of fish at home like carp, roach and trout. Now I also fish for Aussie salmon in the salt water, I love the way they fight, it’s good fun. Borce says he’s planning to use his money to go away for a weekend, which is exactly what Golden Tag aims to achieve getting fishers out into regional Victoria, supporting local businesses.
