23.01.2022 CHAPPY CHATTER Over the past week, I have been focusing on being positive and how this can change my perception of situations and my ability to cope with them. Research has proven that for every negative thought we need to replace it with five positive ones to counteract the negativity. That seems a lot, but as humans we sometimes have the innate propensity to look at the negative, especially when we are under stress. Research also states that when positivity is generated,... the stress hormone cortisol decreases and the brain produces the feel good hormone serotonin, leading to a greater sense of wellbeing. Building positivity is actually a practice and it’s definitely something I need to do more of. I was sitting in traffic the other morning on the way to the gym and feeling frustrated and anxious that I would not make my class on time. By the time I got to the gym it took a while for me to settle myself into the present moment and lose the feelings of frustration. Conversely, I was stuck in the same amount of traffic on my way to work this morning in the same place! I decided to use the time I was stuck in traffic to focus on some positive things about my life. I stopped and took a breath instead of feeling frustrated about circumstances I could not control. The difference in my mental state was obvious. So what can we do to maintain positivity? Focus on what is good in your life we have so much to be thankful for; Show kindness and compassion to others; Surround yourself with positive people; Act positive; Smile and laugh often; Do something nice for someone else. What can you do to be more positive this week? Until next time. See more

09.01.2022 Yesterday a select group of Year 9 and 10 STEM students were invited to attend the Griffith University Science and Engineering Challenge. The challenge was a day-long competition where each school team was divided into 8 groups with each group completing one or two activities throughout the day. Students were awarded points for each activity and the school with the must cumulative points at the end of the day was declared the winner. VPSHS students competed against 5 other private/state high schools and were awarded 4th place at the end of the day's competition. This was a fantastic achievement considering our much lower number of students competing than the other participating schools. Well done to all students involved!

03.01.2022 Chappy Chatter: Last week I had the pleasure of attending formal and being part of the graduation ceremony. As always, it is a time of celebration, but also sadness for our students as they finish one big part of their life and move on to the next step of their journey. It can also be a bit daunting going out into the big wide world. The best thing we can do for our children at this stage of their life is to encourage them to take one day at a time; reflect on their school... years, their experiences and what they have learned; investigate lots of different opportunities; create new memories; focus on the present and look forward to the future. Some students might think that they have to know exactly where they are going as soon as they leave school, but that is not the case. I tell our students that, as long as they are moving forward, seeking new paths and opportunities, they will find their way in the world it is all part of the journey. I wish all of our graduating students the very best in whatever path they choose to take. Until next time. See more
