25.01.2022 Wednesday.....Welcome back to our volunteers. Here is our spectacular arched rose Tradition embracing our lovely volunteers Helen, Margaret & Susan

25.01.2022 Weeper Bloomfields Courage, festoon Manita and a tripod of pink roses Renown's Rosario

25.01.2022 Parks Victoria are transitioning to a "Take Your Rubbish Home" policy. PLEASE TAKE YOUR RUBBISH HOME WITH YOU IF YOU HAVE A PICNIC or VISIT. Parks have put signs up everywhere. Went for a morning walk and found garbage left behind by inconsiderate people . Bins will not be provided in the gardens as people pile there garbage around the bins in the carpark and both gardens. It makes a mess. Don't hide your rubbish either do the correct thing . Birds and wildlife can also get into the bins and become sick . Anything you bring in, you take home again..put it back in your cars and dispose of at home not in our environment. Thanks Parks Victoria

24.01.2022 Our lovely old weeper Dorothy Perkins literally bursting with blooms #parksvictoria

24.01.2022 LOST & FOUND: Hi picnickers, did anyone lose 2 large neatly tied white plastic bags filled with picnic rubbish? Did you accidently leave it under the rosebushes? If this is yours please let us know and we will give it back to you ...no problems. We understand you went for a walk and you forgot and left your rubbish behind instead of putting it in your car and taking home to dispose of. Ps ..I think we also found some receipts in your rubbish so we may do the kind thing and give to authorities to find the owner with the bankcard numbers. I'm being facetious I know. Please keep our parks and gardens clean...take home your rubbish. Parks Victoria

24.01.2022 A few things to remember if you go for a picnic at the Werribee Park Precinct , Parks Victoria have a "Take your rubbish home" policy with no bins in the precinct ...So your rubbish all goes back home. Also please note no tent/gazebos are allowed in the gardens. Damage to trees & shrubs can occur with tent pegs piercing the tree roots , causing disease and protected trees can die. Portable BBQs are only allowed in the designated BBQ area near the car. And kids dont jump in the garden beds playing hidey we all love this garden and volunteers work hard here too . Thanks & enjoy Saw this bird today in Werribee Park and he sang a song for me. Is it a juvenile magpie or a type of Currawong? Anyone know?

23.01.2022 Thankyou to V.S.R G. volunteer Susan Myers for this great photo of a Yellow-rumped Thornbill in our garden. Hoping to get back soon to work, feed, mulch, tieback those roses. The birds and other wildlife have had a great time in our roses. The milk thistles amongst the roses are a sign of covid restrictions too but are also providing the birds with insects and food to eat as well. Thanks Sue great photo. Parks Victoria

21.01.2022 REMEMBERANCE DAY 2020 Charles Bean landed with the Australian troops on Gallipoli on April 25, 1915. He stayed with them at the front through the entire war, refusing evacuation when he was wounded. At Pozieres the following year he was witness to 23,000 Australian casualties in just six weeks. A dying Australian asked him, Will they remember me in Australia?". We are calling on all Australians to remember them by observing one minute's silence at 11 am on the 11th of Novemb...er for Remembrance Day. By observing one minute's silence we pay tribute to the men and women who have served and are still serving in our defence forces and remember those who have died or suffered in conflicts, wars and peacekeeping operations. This Remembrance Day, share who you are remembering on social media using the hashtag #WeRememberThem https://www.awm.gov.au/commemoration/WeRememberThem

19.01.2022 Now we can travel 25km within metro Melb now for only the four reasons?.. shop for essentials, exercise, medical and caring but we cannot travel regionally and still masks & keep your distance. Also 10 people can gather BUT from 2 households only. Rose Mme Alfred Carriere

18.01.2022 Lady Huntingfield in the Australian leaf section is blooming now. We didnt even get to prune this rosebed this year probably not uniform & a bit untidy but she still blooms . This rose was bred by Alister Clark and he tended to name his roses after Governors wives. Lady Huntingfield was Margaret Eleanor (nee Crosby), wife of Baron Huntingfield, the then Governor of Victoria and later Acting Governor-General. Many of Alister Clarks roses are early bloomers. . .... photos Christine Menegazzo volunteer at the VSRG. See more

16.01.2022 Tune into Dr Uwe this weekend on 2GB radio and for those not in NSW, you can catch his segment on https://www.2gb.com/show/the-garden-clinic/ . But if you happ...en to miss either of those, here is a snippet from Uwe about the importance of disinfecting your garden equipment to minimise disease transfer: The cheapest and most effective way to minimise the risk of spreading disease on our gardening tools is a 1 in 9 dilution of household bleach in water. This will kill both the disease and the spores. But this solution won’t kill them instantly, you’ll need to soak your tools for 30 seconds or so especially if there is dirt attached. Also you need to make up fresh solution every day, the chlorine from the bleach is not stable so it will last only 1 day.

15.01.2022 Our Bud Section full of David Austins When you visit the rosegarden please donate something or put a gold coin in the donation tube seen when you walk thru the archway. We have lots of roses to replace and that costs money and we need to feed the roses as this wasn't done this year due to lockdown restrictions. Also the bud sign (see photo) is broken I see...all this costs our volunteer group V .S. R . G. S . money to fix or keep the rosegarden looking good ...we are a not for profit organisation so please donate a gold coin if you can. Or online https://www.vicstaterosegarden.com.au/donations

14.01.2022 Violina is so tall already and this rosebed was lucky to get pruned. How beautiful

14.01.2022 If you see this walking in ....it's pretty hard to miss lol. Please give a gold coin donation (a cup of coffee is much more) for the upkeep of the rose garden. Our volunteer group VSRGSupporters is non for profit and all donations go towards buying replacement roses, much needed fertiliser, tools for our volunteers, pamphlets for the public etc. When we are allowed back into work we are going to need a lot of things. Alternately go to our website in donations and do it online ...here is the link https://www.vicstaterosegarden.com.au/donations. Not many places in the world when you travel, is a rose garden, free entrance. We have a lot to do. Thank you in anticipation

08.01.2022 Some David Austin roses mingling beautifully together . The colour combo is delightful. The Bud section does have tall milk thistle weeds throughout but that's ok ...please leave the weeds so Parks team can eradicate them easily. We have a method and it's slowly working . Interestingly, it seems weeds can be beneficial of course but just messy looking. The snails and bugs have preferred the weeds especially milk thistle rather than the roses. So an interesting experiment is h...appening while we cannot work still in the garden. We may prefer to cut the tall weeds eventually and wand them below the rose line. So leave and don't touch and leave for us to work it all out in a timely fashion . Please don't touch the weeds as they may have herbicide on them. Also please adhere to the signs and do not step onto the rosebeds or inbetween roses as damage to many roses has been caused in the past AND...... make sure all rubbish from your picnic does not blow away and take it home with you. Thanks from the volunteers and enjoy the roses. See more

07.01.2022 Kwinana bred by Australian Frank Riethmuller

06.01.2022 When people say.."oh I have this lovely red rose growing and I don't remember planting it" its usually a sucker from below the graft called Dr. Huey one of a few strong roses used for grafting roses Though I am not sure if this is Dr Huey ..I should have taken a closer photo. This big spray of red roses are from our rose Governor Macquarie, the pale pink rose. We have a most experienced volunteer remover of suckers, our dear John. He took over from Gleniss . On all fours John... needs to dig to the root where this sucker came out and knock it off with a hammer if possible. A sucker is very strong and takes over from the original grafted rose. As we havent been around to work in the rosegarden for around 138 days John may need a few of us to help him with this job. We have lots of suckers at the moment. It's a doozie! Never dig deeply around a rose as a damaged root may produce a sucker as well. See more

06.01.2022 Mme Alfred Carriere on our arches This makes my heart sing....lalalalaaaa

06.01.2022 Picnics.....ask your grandma how to picnic. No gourmet orders to pick up... We were very responsible once upon a time when we picnicked. We made rolls or sandwiches and packed them tight in a tupperware type container . Usually covered with wax paper instead of plastic wrap. We didnt buy picnic hampers with plastic containers of dips and cardboard wrappings. We may have bought a cooked chook the day before from the shops to cut up into pieces to eat cold or put in chicken san...dwiches or we had leftover snitzels in a sandwich . Or boiled some cornbeef for sandwiches with yellow mustard pickles and lettuce, egg sandwiches, or hardboiled eggs in a take home container, we cut up fruit or brought some bananas or apples to eat, Water in bottles and hot water in a thermos to drink and someone had home made cakes, patty cakes, slices to share and of course some drinks in an esky. Not much rubbish involved and all from home in take home containers. Everyone usually chipped in and made something .What was your favourite picnic food when young? See more

05.01.2022 And one more...Lorraine Lee cascading and being wonderful. Another early flowering old rose bred by Australian Alister Clark .

05.01.2022 SPRING 2020...Here are my fingers crossed so that all our volunteers may soon be allowed to at least visit the rosegardens soon.....IF the lockdown rules lift today from 5km to 20km as we expect. They won't be allowed to work anytime yet but at least we can enjoy the fruits of our past labours. Cannot believe it has been nearly 100 days of lockdown .... Nearly 5 months! The season of Winter & half of Spring wow. Back on track hopefully now. Hope I have been able to keep you... in touch volunteers and followers with our virtual beautiful rosegarden. . . 03.01.2022 Dreaming of roses again. June is Winter here in Victoria, Australia and it is our pruning season and we missed out last year with lockdown. We hope it all gets back to normal as soon as possible after our 4th lockdown in Victoria. We really need to get back on board and want to work as soon as possible in the rose garden as much as we can. We have a lot to do always. Come on everyone, think about it...if you are elderly or have conditions , if you visit family in aged care o...r someone in hospital, or if you work with people anywhere, in shops, in a school, in an office or supermarket, play sport, volunteer your time with others, play bingo, work on a farm , go to church, see your family, work on an assembly line, in a factory etc please all try and get your vaccination. If you are a hermit so be it . Don't comment about it , dont get upset, just do it asap if you can. Thankyou See more

03.01.2022 Hello, volunteers please check your email for an email from our secretary of the V.S.R.G, Margret. Thankyou Christine

02.01.2022 Hello rose garden.....we're baaack! This morning at 7am and 10am , 2 groups of 10 volunteers from the V.S.R.G.S were allowed back into the rose garden to work at staggered times. We were so happy to see everyone . So many weeds, fertiliser to apply, mulch & deadheading eventually . Inventory by our commitee and lots of snails, weeds and dieback from unpruned roses . In general the roses look great and will look especially good with a bit of TLC. Lovely to see some Parks team, Jim helping us out with removal of the heap of weeds also thanks to Hsar for watering the Australian Leaf yesterday, made weeding a lot easier

02.01.2022 Glorie Lyonnaise. Remember the rules . 25km travel only. Masks. If you are meeting up to 10 others outside and not from the one household you cannot travel in the car together ...you have to drive there separately . No dogs, no rubbish, no standing in rosebeds & their are lots of signs around .
