17.01.2022 VITAMIN D - AND THE BREAST: BREAST AWARENESS MONTH We've all heard of Vitamin D but how many of you are aware in the significant role that it plays in women's health and in particular breast cancer risk and treatment, both before and after the menopause ? Many newly diagnosed breast cancer patients are found to be deficient in this 'sunshine' vitamin. Perhaps that tiredness, weakness, or just feeling fed up may be due to low Vitamin D levels - especially if you are darker ...skinned or over 50, and avoid the sun in Australia. Darker skinned women over 50 don't covert sunshine into Vitamin D as easily as their lighter skinned sisters do, so they are much more at risk of Vitamin D Deficiency - and this is certainly something I noticed very frequently working as a Breast Surgeon with a highly diverse and cosmopolitan poulation of patients back in London. A deficiency of vitamin D has been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, and there is growing evidence that it is of significant benefit to have healthy blood levels in breast cancer treatments. Vitamin D does act directly on the breast to keep breats tissue healthy by influencing breast cell growth. So please act to ensure that in Australia your Vitamin D levels are as normal as possible, especially if you are darker skinned, and discuss the importance of this vitamin with your specialist doctors. It may well be a very good idea to take some Vitamin D supplements. See more
