16.01.2022 Members of VicWelsh describe what the choir means to them

11.01.2022 Concert this Sunday at 3.00 at Auburn Uniting Church. Don't miss this Singing into Summer joint concert with our old friends the Geelong Welsh Ladies Choir. Apart from their own brackets, they will combine on five numbers to offer soaring six-part harmonies. Tickets from TryBooking or $30 at the door.

05.01.2022 Singing through the shutdown. Like all other choirs, concerts have been cancelled or postponed and we have not been able to have our usual rehearsals in Blackburn, Bendigo and Ballarat. Weekly 'homework' has been emailed out by Faleiry for individual practice at home and committee work has continued via teleconferencing. Other interaction has taken place via Zoom and we are currently evaluating suitable rehearsal platforms. In the meantime, a specially commissioned promotional video has been produced and is posted here for general interest and to attract new members and hirers when normality returns.

04.01.2022 Choir activities on hold Under the Covid-19 restrictions, naturally no rehearsals or concerts have been possible. Scientific evidence shows that choirs will be among the last activities to resume, due to the risks inherent in the explosive forces behind the droplets expelled during singing. No firm date can be given at this time. Since the shut-down, however, choir members have been able to take part in regular video rehearsals, taken by Associate MD Rushan Hewawasam with rec...orded music laid down by accompanist Lorna Ogilvie, via Vimeo. Additionally, Mornington Peninsula-based chorister John Evans has recorded many of our songs by multilayering all four parts, sung entirely by himself. Fellow choristers are therefore able to sing along with the MP3 recording via Dropbox. MD Faleiry Koczkar sends out a weekly email, with birthday greetings for members and their partners plus a list of songs to practise at home. The choir’s almoners have also been phoning members on a regular basis in order to make sure that everyone is well. We are happy to report that, to date, nobody in the choir family has tested positive to the virus. The Bendigo group initiated Thursday night Zoom sessions in March and these have continued on a weekly basis. Additional sessions, involving choristers from all three chapters, also take place two or three times a week. Whereas it is too difficult to sing together, because of the various time lags, members are able to see and chat to each other and at least partially keep up the camaraderie which is such a strong feature of belonging to a choir.

02.01.2022 Lest We Forget Remembrance Service Springvale Botanical Cemetery 10 November 2019 The choir was once again involved in this annual service which, this year, also marked the start of World War Two. Proceedings were directed by MC Col. Jason Cooke, prayers led by Chaplain Mark Dunn AAC and the address given by Col. Michelle Campbell who spoke about the importance of women and families during war and peacetime. Accompanied by the City of Greater Dandenong Band, the choir led the... singing of O Valiant Hearts, Abide With Me, O God Our Help In Ages Past and Advance Australia Fair. As the service finished, the Band played a medley of wartime favourite tunes which choristers naturally sang along to. Amongst other participants who came up to thank the band and the choir for their involvement was ex-chorister Eric Billingham and wife Ruth and Bill Shorten. See more

01.01.2022 Wonthaggi concert 3 November 2019 After a number of years, the choir was glad to be reacquainted with the Union Community Arts Centre for a Sunday afternoon concert, organised by the churches as a fundraiser for the local hospital. After the first Welsh verses of Gwr Harlech, Faleiry turned to the audience to draw their attention to the English words which they could read and use to sing along with the choir which they did, with gusto. Compère Drew Hopkins introduced the ...Continue reading
