22.01.2022 In a society where airbrushed models in magazines and the media’s portrayal of the ‘perfect’ body is relentless, our inner voice can start to compare our attractiveness to the standards that have been set by society. Before long, we start to believe that in order to be accepted by society, we must have cellulite-free thighs, perky bottoms, washboard abs, or even sleek jawlines. We start to compare ourselves to others and our confidence begins to unravel. During these times yo...ur thoughts can significantly influence your body confidence, so it’s really important to cut those negative thoughts as soon as they pop up. If your thoughts about yourself are words you’d never utter to a friend or someone you love, then it’s a pretty good sign you shouldn’t be saying it to yourself. You should be your biggest advocate. Some of us are guilty of thinking or saying, I must start exercising or I’ll always be fat or ugly! Instead, focus on the enjoyment and health aspects of exercise. How do you feel after a workout - do you carry yourself better, do you go out and tackle the day with confidence, do you feel energised? These are the things we should focus on. Replace negative thoughts with things you love about your body. Eat healthy, pamper and nurture your mind, body and soul, and most of all stop comparing yourself to others. This is evidenced by the lack of prime time viewing of females in sport across the board. In the past and sometimes still today comments such as, ‘you play like a girl,’ had negative connotations associated with being weak, not as good as the boys and less worthy. Although we have come so far where the term ‘play like a girl,’ is now gaining association with more positive words ...such as strength and courage, we are still a long way from the term being perceived and treated in the same way as ‘playing like a boy’ in every sport. 08.01.2022 Do you want to be part of the female empowerment challenge? Then read below What is female empowerment? Like seriously, what is it? We’ve heard so many people talk and say they’re all about female empowerment and even set up empowerment groups. Yet we see behaviours from some of these very people gossiping, slandering, undermining and spreading untruths about other women. We’ve all seen this behaviour in the workplace, amongst groups of friends and from people we have cr...ossed paths with and we’ve seen it here on social media too. But why is this the case? Is it because they may be jealous that another woman is smart, pretty, smashing her goals, has more friends or owns a better handbag than you? Is it because another woman is of a different ethnicity or has different beliefs to you? Is it because you believe in order for you to reach the top that you must step on others to get there? In our fight for female equality we talk about the sexism we face, but what about the sexism and behaviours displayed towards one another? As women we can’t be knee-capping one another and still claim to represent female empowerment. How are we to achieve equality if we’re cutting down our own? But let’s make it clear. That doesn’t mean that another woman can’t call you out on your error, behaviour, or if you do the wrong thing. If you make a mistake, then you need to accept it, apologise, take responsibility for it and change your behaviour without bringing down the person who called you out in the first place. Don’t misguide others about the facts to benefit your own cause, to hide your mistake or to gain sympathy. Act with integrity. Women don't have to be better than anyone else to deserve human rights - we are all equal, but we must first start with treating one another in this way. We can’t have double standards and expect to be taken seriously. It can push us to go a little further, and dig a little deeper when our minds tells us to stop. * Accountability and commitment to others can often be enough motivation to keep us consistently turning up. You’re less likely to cancel or be a no-show. * Working out with others can increase the fun factor dramatically, lead to amazing friendships, and can often result in signing up for events we would never have contemplated before. * Exercising with others provides a sense of routine and normality in our lives, and especially this year the importance of that in such uncertain times can not be underestimated. 02.01.2022 Women can be anything they want to be. But did you know that a female’s perception of her ability to be ‘brilliant’ can be hindered from as young as the age of 6? Studies undertaken on primary school children have shown that when told a story about someone who was ‘brilliant’ and successful and then asked to decide whether the character was male or female, the children tended to show a higher tendency of choosing the male. For children under the age of 6, there was a clear s...plit with girls and boys tending to choose their own gender as the character most likely to be brilliant, however there was a dramatic change from the ages 6 and up with the majority of girls and boys tending to pick the male as the most likely to be the ‘brilliant’ character. These studies show the importance of children being exposed to a wide range of role models from all genders in all fields of work, sport and play. To ensure we don’t hinder children’s professional aspirations, it is important to remind children that success and being ‘brilliant’ in any line of work is achieved by working hard and being passionate about what you do and that it is not an inborn ability based on one’s gender. Girls can be brilliant and anything they choose to be - a scientist, an engineer, a plumber, a lawyer, an athlete, absolutely anything they want to be including a princess if they want to be.
