20.01.2022 Looking back on 100 years of the VWA Blagoy Blagoev All-time great is not often used to describe an athlete, greatest ever is even more rare, yet both have been used when Blagoy Blagoev is the athlete in question. That Blagoev is one of the all-time greats is undisputed, given his resume of 18 world records, three world titles (1981-1983) and countless international victories, while his snatch of 195.5kg at under 90kg bodyweight has been hailed by many followers of the ga...me as the greatest snatch ever (see video in Comments below). To Blagoy’s disappointment, his native Bulgaria boycotted the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games and the reigning world champion retired from competition that year. However, an invitation from Australia to compete at the 1985 Moomba International interested him, so with little training he made his way to Melbourne, where he duly won the event and was courted by members of the local weightlifting community. The seed was planted and Blagoev considered the idea of a future for his family in Australia. Communications continued and by 1991 circumstances had made it possible for him to return to Melbourne. Blagoev’s arrival in Australia was big news in international weightlifting as he had also facilitated the recruiting of a number of Eastern European champions that made a huge impact on the domestic weightlifting scene. While his main focus was contributing to coaching at the Victorian Institute of Sport, Blagoev also trained, winning a couple of national titles for Victoria and setting Australian records. He had a long term involvement with the Australian Paralympic team, guiding, amongst others, gold medallist Brian McNicholl and together, they oversaw the strength and conditioning program at AFL club Collingwood for a number of years. Robert Kabbas described being invited to share Blagoev’s platform in the warm up room at an international event in Hungary as a great experience. Bill Stellios and I walked into the warm up room and started looking for a spot on one of the platforms when Blagoy gestured for us to share his platform. He was the world’s best lifter and it was a great experience to warm up alongside him. As you would expect, he was a confident, very focused athlete but also down-to-earth and friendly. I never imagined that some years later we would both be in Melbourne, discussing the outcome of a Collingwood-Richmond AFL game! I just think it’s a shame and a loss to Australian weightlifting that an asset like Blagoy, one of the biggest names in world weightlifting, has not been properly recognised and utilised. #vwa #awf #weightlifting #greats #legend #100years

20.01.2022 Good afternoon everyone, please see the below message from Ryan. The deadline to complete our Vicsport survey to review weightlifting participation and competitions has been extended. Vicsport is the peak body for sport and active recreation in Victoria and are assisting us to review the experiences of VWA members and volunteers and design creative solutions to grow weightlifting events and competitions into the future.... Have your say! Vicsport has prepared a survey for all VWA members, volunteers and officials to provide feedback on your experiences in the sport of weightlifting. The survey should take anywhere from 10-20 minutes to complete. It is important that we hear form as many people as possible so that we gain a deep understanding of the different perspectives and experiences across our passionate weightlifting community. All responses are anonymous and the data will be collected by Vicsport. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CWGFZG7 Thanks for helping us make our sport better. Ryan

There are a number of key changes in relation to the in-competition period, sanctions for some illicit drug cases and people who admit to doping, plus a new rule violation to protect people who report doping.
