07.01.2022 Bishnupur (the city of God Vishnu), West Bengal was the capital of the Malla dynasty of eastern India. They were ardent followers of Vaishnavism, and the tem...ples of Bishnupur were instrumental in consolidating the Gaudiya Vaishnava community of Bengal. The Shyama Raya Temple in the photograph above, was built by the Malla king, Raghunath Singh. The Gaudiya Vaishnava devotional movement emerged under the guidance of a popular Bengali saint, Chaitanya, who expressed the importance of a personal and intimate relation (Bhakti) with the main deity of the tradition, God Krishna. The movement gets its name from Gauda - once the capital of the Sultanate of Bengal, and Vaishnavism, which refers to the worship of God Vishnu. Srinivas Acharya, a Vaishnava guru, brought the central doctrinal texts to Bishnupur and spread awareness about the passion for God Krishna through festivals involving the singing of kirtan. A visual vocabulary was thus created in the form of devotional sculptures, paintings and songs for depicting the stories, so that the audience could emotionally respond and grasp its significance, creating a sensory link with the original divine performance of the playful acts (lila) of God Krishna. The practice of hearing the stories of Lord Krishna’s pastimes, from the Bhagavad Purana, a text regarded as divine revelation is advocated by this community. The text indicates that the delightful stories of God Krishna have the potency of wiping out sins. A quotation from the same, "krsnastu bhagavan svayam", translates to "Shree Krishna is God Himself". The philosophy includes theories on the existence of soul, presence of one supreme personality of godhead, and liberation from the cycle of rebirth through the practice of Bhakti.
