21.01.2022 On 29/11/2020, with AUD5000 provided by Vietnam Foundation's flood and storm recovery fund, VNF's in-country partner Dr Trn c Anh Sn procured and delivered essential provisions, fittings and fixtures for Phong Thy Kindergarten, Qung Bình province, to enable the school to take in children from the nearby i Phong Kindergarten. i Phong Kindergarten was badly damaged during the recent floods and storms, and a philanthropist from Hanoi will be providing funds for the rep...airs and rectification of the actual school building when flood water recedes. In the meantime and until the school is repaired, made safe and operational, 150 children at i Phong Kindergarten needed to be temporarily transferred to Phong Thy Kindergarten, which already had to cater for its own 250 existing preschool children. As a result, funds were urgently required to support and accommodate these additional 150 children. Following consultation with Phong Thy Kindergarten, Dr Sn decided to use the funds provided by VNF to procure beds, hot water units, water purifiers, electric fans, LED TVs, laser printers, and consumables to increase the school's capacity and services. VNF would like to thank Dr Sn for his tremendous efforts in effectively coordinating and managing the delivery of this well targeted and much needed relief work.

21.01.2022 Recycled Bicycles Project for 2018 Vietnam Foundations Recycled Bicycles Project commencing in 2012 has three aims: (i) to provide high-quality, used bicycles to poor and bright school children in Vietnam, (ii) to provide employment to local businesses and ... (iii) to promote environmental sustainability in Vietnam. Last year we delivered a total of 400 recycled bicycles: 150 bicycles in Central Vietnam (Quang Tri - 40 bicycles, Tha Thin - 70 bicycles, Quang Ngai - 40 bicycles) and 250 bicycles in the delta region of southern Vietnam (Tr Vinh - 60 bicycles; C Mau - 40 bicycles; ng Thp - 30 bicycles; Hu Giang - 30 bicycles; An Giang - 30 bicycles; Bc Liu - 30 bicycles; Tin Giang - 30 bicycles). This project has been managed by a former Scout leader in Hue and Nhom Hanh Trinh Yeu Thuong (Journey of Love Group) in Saigon, these volunteers receive no remuneration for their time and in some instances pay for their own expenses. Our target this year is also to raise $18,000 to deliver 400 recycled bicycles ($45 for each refurbished bicycle) in central and southern Vietnam where the refurbishment will start in early June 2018 for distribution around the beginning of the school year in September 2018. We sincerely thank you for your generous support in the past years to make this happening and to bring smiles and hopes to poor school children in Vietnam. 14.01.2022 With the cooperation of the Hnh Trnh Yu Thng (HTYT or Journey of Love) charity group in Vietnam, in 2017-2018 we financed the repair/reconditioning of 250 old, broken or discarded bicycles. Through our Xe p Yu Thng Cng Em n Trng (Beloved bicycle Cycling with me to school) these recycled bicycles were then donated as rewards to students of poor family but with good academic standing who live in remote areas of the Mekong delta. The HTYT group assisted us... in the acquisition of the bicycles and in supervising the reparation. They then travelled to remote schools to distribute the bicycles. The 250 recycled bicycles were distributed as follows: Duyn Hi district, Tr Vinh province 30 Tiu Cu district, Tr Vinh province 30 C Mau province 40 ng Thp province 30 Hu Giang province 30 An Giang province 30 Bac Liu province 30 Tin Giang province 30 The cost of these recycled bicycles amounted to VND 187,500,000, which was contributed by many of our members and supporters. A big, big thank you to the generous donors and to HTYT members.

10.01.2022 New bridge for the people in X Phin, Hu Giang We are helping build a new bridge to replace an old, rickety timber bridge in Hu Giang province. Known by the locals as Cu ngn mn, it is located at Hamlet 7, X Phin village, Long M district, 227 km from Saigon and 65 km from Cn Th (see map). As shown in the many photos below, the bridge is in an appalling condition, presenting a huge danger to all users. In fact, it has caused many serious accidents for the locals..., especially children going to the two nearby primary schools and a secondary school. A high proportion of the local people are ethnic Khmer. The new bridge will be of concrete construction, 28m long, 3m wide and 5 Ton capacity. Total cost amounts to VND 261 Million (about AUD 16,000), of which Vietnam Foundation contributes VND 140 Million, local people and authorities VN 80 Million and the ng Tm Charity group, which manages the construction, VND 41 Million. Ground breaking ceremony for the construction was held on 18 August 2018. Bridge construction is currently in full swing.

08.01.2022 VNF VIETNAM FLOOD RELIEF NEWS UPDATE Here is a selection of photos provided last week by one of our in-country VNF partners, Dr Tran Duc Anh Son and his associate Nguyen Phong, who are delivering relief to flood affected areas. Dr Son and his team visited severely impacted villages and communes in Quang Tri and Quang Binh provinces from 15/10/2020 to 20/10/2020. This included Hai Thuong commune, Hai Le commune, Dong Le ward, Xuan Thuy commune, and Phong Thuy commune. Rice, instant noodles and other foods, medicine, and life jackets were distributed to flood victims. Additional cash was gifted to the elderly, women and children who were deemed to be the most vulnerable and with the greatest need. The relief effort is now focussing on the work of repairing and rebuilding homes and schools damaged by floods in these communities.

07.01.2022 Another new bridge for the people in Hu Giang! We are helping build another new bridge in X Phin village, Long M district, Hu Giang province. This bridge is called Knh Cng bridge, in hamlet 2, and is approximately 5 km from the Ngn Mn bridge that we helped built recently (please see previous posts). The original old concrete bridge collapsed many years ago. The locals used bits of wood and bamboo trunks to construct a makeshift monkey bridge so that the child...ren can go to the nearby schools. The new bridge, to replace the existing bridge, will be of concrete, 30 m long, 3 m wide and with 5 Ton capacity. It is also designed by NEMO Construction Consultant in Vietnam, who has been providing us with pro bono bridge design services. To allow easy passage of rice barges, the new bridge will also be a bit higher than the existing bridge. The total cost of the bridge is VND 158 million, of which Vietnam Foundation is contributing VND 110 million (approximately AUD 6,600), the local authorities and people the remainder. To allow proper alignment of the new bridge with the existing road, a local peasant donates some land for use in the approach to the bridge. Construction work started straight after the ground-breaking ceremony on 17 November 2018. Present at the ceremony were many joyful locals, who are enthusiastically looking forward to their new bridge, our representative, Prof Hunh Cng Hoi as well as Ms Nguyn Ngc Mai representing the ng Tm Charity Group, which is managing the bridge construction. The new bridge is scheduled to be completed and opened on 6 January 2019, as a lunar New Year gift to the locals.

07.01.2022 The new Tn Thit bridge in Tn Thnh village, Mc Ha district, Long An province has been completed and is now open for traffic. Replacing an old, narrow and flimsy bridge with no parapet (please see previous posts), this new bridge, wider, with handrails and of a higher load-carrying capacity, not only facilitates the passing of ambulances, small buses and trucks which are needed by the local people but also provides more safety for all bridge users, specially young childre...n going to schools. The opening ceremony was held on 28 Jan 2018 with the presence of our two representatives in Vietnam: Assoc Prof HC Hoi and Ms NT Huyn Trn. The ceremony, organised by our projects partner, the ng Tm Charity Group (CLB T Thin ng Tm), included a lion dance show, some celebratory singing, and the gifting of school stationery to 50 poor local school children. Total final cost of the bridge was VND 260 million, of which we contributed VND 100 million.

01.01.2022 VIETNAM FOUNDATION’S REBIKE FOR KIDS (R4K) PROJECT UPDATE: VNF has recently funded a new project in collaboration with our Vietnam in-country partner Trn Quyt Thng of R4K to recycle 200 old bikes destined for land fill, by repairing and refitting with new or recycled parts. These fully refurbished and newly painted bicycles will be distributed amongst school children from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds in rural and remote areas. Ngh An, Thanh Hóa and Thái Bình ...were initially selected as target provinces. Due to a greater than expected demand, the target provinces have been extended to include Hà Giang and Qung Tr . It is expected that the entire 200 bikes will be completed and delivered to the children by February 2021. The first 20 bikes were delivered to students of Khâu Vai Junior High School in Mèo Vc (Hà Giang) in December 2020, to be followed by another 20 bikes to primary school students in a Krông (Qung Tr). Here are some photos of the recycled bikes, and new or recycled bike parts ready for assembly. See more
