25.01.2022 Filtered light A place to hide In this private patio Brings delight Calm and respite... A place for you to go The strings come down They balance out A pleasantry to see But even though it’s organised It can be what it wants to be The beauty of your garden Really brightens up my day And I think most people walking past Would have the same to say And I just can’t help but wonder Why it touches me so And I think it’s to do with knowing That there are people that can grow Growing is a knowledge And of course some instinct too But without the help of green fingers like you It isn’t that easy to do I don’t mean that you need to teach Or tell us what goes where But you are showing us, what you can achieve yourself If you take the time and care And we need this inspiration now In this world that’s upside down To believe in ourselves and our abilities And build an even stronger .... city Thank you so much Di, for sharing your garden with us!

24.01.2022 Seed Collecting has started Hopefully the birds will leave us some!

24.01.2022 Bernie and Mary, what a wonderful job you have done creating this magnificent garden on top of sand stone. It must have given you so much joy, company and peace over the last 40 odd years, but clearly a lot of hard work as well. Every nook and cranny that you can find will have something wonderful growing in it. Your family farm equipment really make this garden stand out oldpa and how’s this, as I was there, Mary gave her niece a handwritten recipe book with all their belove...d family recipes as a birthday gift plus a big bunch of freshly picked beetroot and how special is it to have a 40 year old lemon tree in your garden that’s never been without a lemon, despite people jumping the fence and pinching them! I can fully understand the magpies coming to visit several times a day. If I could, I would too! This is our 4th garden of the month and it has been an absolute honour to have been shown around your little paradise. See more

23.01.2022 Doesn’t that look pretty!

22.01.2022 How quick this has all come together is unbelievable. The time has come for our new workshops to start! There has been an overwhelming amount of support from within the community to carry this project through. Already people have been offering their spare time to help out. A big thank you to Leanne, Gordon, Daniel and Dianne from the Salvation Army Thrift Shop. Chris and office ladies at the Salvation Army. John for the lovely mowing. David, Joanna, Tahlia and Woody (Border ...Collie) from Avalon Nursery, the Salvation Army is very grateful for your support of this Community Project and really appreciates your kindness. Bill for the big pile of punnets he’s been saving for me and Geena for the photo’s. This wouldn’t be happening without your support! The first workshop will start this Monday from 10 am - 11 am. We will plant the new Lemon Tree, kindly donated by Avalon Nursery! Even though I would generally like to start from scratch, with seeds, this week we will start with tiny seedlings of tomatoes and lettuces. We will supply the seed/seedlings, containers and the soil, which has been generously donated by The Midfield Group. All you need to do is come along and pot up some seedlings for you to take home and look after. We can then give you advice on how to look after your plant at different stages and try and grow it into a healthy food for you to eat! Workshops will run weekdays from 10 am - 11 am I would love for you to come along and talk Vegies!!

13.01.2022 The Topiary Garden Maybe most of you already know this stunningly beautiful garden, but you might not have seen it as up close and personal as now. How can you find words to describe a place as pretty as this. Maybe I come close when I say: ‘Lesley can make a Tea Tree look like it’s straight out of a fairy tale’. The garden is only about 6 years old, but a lot of the plants she grows are quite unusual and look like they have been there forever, which is not an easy thing to d...o, making a young garden look old. The use of mainly foliage plants with different textures, shapes and sizes works a treat and has intentionally created a tropical feel, among them a Paw Paw tree! This truely is an artists garden where plants and other natural materials are used to make a complete picture. What a pleasure it must be to live in this life painting, which you can adjust to your liking whenever you please. Here is an ode to the hedge, which is one of the main features in the garden. It does not like to behave So you’ve got to be brave If something similar you crave For time you won’t save But if sculpturing you fave You’re sure to be safe Growing a Muehlenbeckia wave

12.01.2022 I made these rings out of tins a while ago for potatoes. You can stack ring upon ring as the potatoes grow and I was quite pleased with the result.

11.01.2022 A saucer for our extra thirsty customers

11.01.2022 Chop Sui If you don’t like eating it, you would grow it just for the flowers

10.01.2022 An easy way to make some pots at home, which uses only 1 staple

09.01.2022 I always was a Costa fan, but even more so now. Thank you for this amazing update on what is happening in regards to Horticultural Therapy around Australia guys, it was all music to my ears!

09.01.2022 Mini Cauliflowers for dinner tonight

08.01.2022 It’s a Ladybird year, yippee!

08.01.2022 I’m actually displaying my artwork! Didn’t think that would ever happen. I think they make it look like a lounge room.

07.01.2022 Our garden of the month for November, is God’s garden. At the Salvation Army’s new Community Garden Project, we had a visit from Sean. Sean looks after the garden of The Anglican Church of Warrnambool. I went to visit him and we talked about the garden, which is a Rose garden. He says, ‘I don’t really like roses. I know they’re only protecting themselves, but they’re just so prickly. It’s not about the roses though. I come here for the birds. You see that Magpie over there, ...that bird is smarter than me, in a few seconds it will have caught itself a nice big worm, see, I couldn’t have done that. It’s in touch with it’s environment, that’s what we have lost in our society, maybe that is what this is all about in the world today. People come here, because they need help with whatever addiction they have. We all are addicted to something though, alcohol, drugs, money, you name it and it’s really hard to get off these things, you just need to take it a day at a time and don’t pressure yourself. That is what this garden is for, it’s a place of refuge.’ It was a true pleasure talking to you Sean and I’m looking forward to seeing you at our Community Project again next week to transplant your seedlings into larger pots. P.S. The roses are looking magnificent!

07.01.2022 Trees of Warrnambool

07.01.2022 We are very happy with how things have been going this first month in our new Garden Project Workshops. It started of relatively quiet, which worked out well, s...o that we had time to do some planting and rearranging, but we still had about half a dozen visitors, planting and taking home some seedlings. In the weeks thereafter we had between 1 and 3 people each day, which works well in regards to a COVID safe environment. The Lemon Tree donated to us by Avalon Nursery, has now been planted in a large pot and we are looking forward to watching it grow. The beans have unfortunately suffered a little bit from the heat, but it looks like they will make it. We now have Silverbeet growing, Lettuces, Coriander, lots of Tomatoes, Celery, Parsnips, Radishes, Rocket and lots more. Feel free to come and have a look or pick some Silverbeet, Rocket or Micro Greens to take home. See more

06.01.2022 It’s quite amazing how every little lump in a cauliflower turns into a flower

06.01.2022 Coriander is starting to sprout. Would you like some when it’s ready Jen (Reid), Kim, Sarah, Mandy?

05.01.2022 Things are getting out of hand at Kim’s. I think she might be enjoying her new hobby!

05.01.2022 This 35 year old garden reminds all of us of a rainforest, when you walk past. However, when you walk into it, it surprises you with succulents and well aged cacti. The first thing you notice as you walk in, is the buttons on the path, mosaiced into the floor where bits of paving have aged away. All of them will find a place over time. The way the plants are placed in the many pots, makes me feel they are all living in their own little community, chatting away together, while statues and artwork hidden throughout the garden, make you feel as if you’re the object in the garden, not them. This is my husband’s favourite garden and it’s our 3rd garden of the month. Thank you so much Leonie for showing me around and for making me believe I’m going in the right direction.

03.01.2022 I would like to introduce myself (Paula) and Kirsty as the Garden Coordinators for the Port Fairy Community Garden. We both have strong backgrounds in Horticul...ture, design and permaculture and would love to share our skills and experience with you. Please join us on Monday mornings at 10am at the Community garden, just beside the Community House, to come together to help develop this beautiful garden space and to meet like minded people, learn new skills in production gardening and produce organic food. We look forward to meeting you all then!! PS. Watch this space for exciting workshops etc to come.....

02.01.2022 Maybe Basil prefers to be grown in containers?
