21.01.2022 We took it out of you, didn't we, Layla? This lovely girl is Layla, is a 7 year old #boxerdog cross #staffy Unfortunately Layla has struggled with a lot of #anxiety in her life and is a very #fearful girl. This has caused her to have a lot of generalised #reactivity and #aggressivebehaviour towards both #dogs and #people... I've spoken a lot with Layla's owner, but we've been unable to meet due to #covid19 But, persistence pays off, and we finally got together! Layla was very vocal when she first saw me, but her tail was tucked, despite her boisterous display. We spent some time getting her to chase treats, before we put her on a #slipcollar and started some #pressurerelease work. She screamed when I took the #leash and threw herself on the grass in a panic. I would normally never yield to a dog having a tantrum, but it was clear that she was not ready to work with me. So I hung back, and began guiding her owner, who did an amazing job! We began slowly #exposing Layla to her fears, and trust me, there are plenty of those. Dogs, people, wind, windows shutters, visitors, rubbish bins. But she very quickly understood that there was a way to make the stressful event go away: simply by focusing on mum, and not reacting. 17.01.2022 After an #onlineconsult today, where we spoke about #confidence building and #boxfeeding I thought it was time for Bennster to have a crack at it. Box feeding is a concept created by #bartbellon and popularised by #thecanineparadigm podcast. The basic idea is to build focus and innoculate against #stress through small successive steps. The #dog has to keep its head in the box, in order for food to trickle in. If the head comes out, the #reinforcers stop.... Now, I havent got the best box here, as it is too light for mr. Happens aaaaaalllll the time! We put in some clear boundaries, work on #yielding to #pressure and #looseleashwalking ... Rona (white collar) hasnt eaten anything all day, but she is still up and playing with the others. Zoom (yellow) had a very rough morning and was vomited on by Karen (red) while sleeping.... Dan (blue) has probably been the perkiest of the lot, despite a long night of crying. This has led to some lack of #engagement with his owner and a lot of #leashpulling ... But, after only 45 minutes of setting some new criteria, and finding ways to motivate him, this was the result! 10.01.2022 Watch out, Banjo the #bordoodle about! Yesterday, I went out on a job. I was contacted by Banjos owner two days ago, as he had nipped a child in the house. When it comes to #dogs and #kids there is no time for messing around. Banjo is a lovely 1 year old man, but a little sensitive to #pressure ... Understanding dog #bodylanguage is crucial, especially when you have children in the same house as dogs. We often hear the phrase "out of the blue" as #dogtrainers . It is however extremely rare for #aggression to happen out of the blue. Most of the time the dog has given many warnings using its bodylanguage, but many dog owners are unable to read these signs. So the dog escalates. And the absolute final warning a dog has to give, is a gentle nip. We started by adding some clarity between Banjo and his owners, both big and small. We introduced #pressuretraining in order to build his #confidence and tolerance to stress. We implemented a number of strategies to create #space and relax the environment. I am confident everything will be fine, now that we have clear boundaries and understanding in place. But please understand, if you have children and dogs in the same house, these #behaviours will not likely resolve themselves. Get a balanced trainer in to help you as soon as any conflict arises, dont wait for it to go pearshaped! 08.01.2022 #pupdate on Charlie the #maremma Only a week ago I was called out to meet Charlie. He is due to be moved interstate in only a few weeks, but no transport company would take him, due to his #aggressivebehaviour Today I got this email;... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Hes a completely different dog! I have been walking him through the busy park at the busiest of times and hes completely unfazed. We had an off lead uncontrolleddog come up to us on our walk and Charlie (with no muzzle) just welcomed him, no growling no jumping around, they just sniffed each other. I was completely speechless. I have found he does need to be pulled back into line on the days after Ive been at work. Hes slowly getting his head aroundthe clicker and he understands place and stay but when I say free, he just stays there staring at me haha. I cant believe how much he has changedin such a short time! Thank you for everything it has been life changing." ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Charlie was a runaway ship without a Captain at the helm. 08.01.2022 Everyone, say hi to Charlie Yesterday I went out on a job, as we are allowed to still work #aggression cases. Charlie is a #maremmasheepdog and is a #guardbreed dog. This means he has a genetic tendency to protect his pack. ... Charlies owners are moving far away soon and need him to be able to go on transport, but at this point everyone has declined him. We are now on a pretty tight deadline and I was worried. But, when I met this beautiful boy, I quickly realised that he is just doing what he was bred to do, and that his #behaviour has incidentally been reinforced. This is very common, especially in breeds that are meant to work. In only an hour of teaching him to understand us better, and showing him that he can follow, rather than just react to everything, he was already a much calmer boy. And today I received a very excited update that he was doing great! #aggressivebehaviour is so interesting to work with and it is such a #rewarding thing to help people with. Remember: if youre having issues with #reactivity or aggression, understanding how it gets reinforced is paramount! In almost all cases, the #dog is looking for #space and very often that is what we give them. Understanding when to utilise #pressure and when to #reward is key to helping our dogs. Cant wait to see this stunning boy again! 07.01.2022 Hey Benji. Thanks for not biting me. This beautiful boy is a #bordercollie who is massively lacking #confidence and #socialisation to people, #dogs and bikes. He is currently with a #fostercarer in Victoria, but after the person attempted to apply some #pressure to him, he went into full #beastmode and began displaying disturbing #aggressive #behaviours by #lunging #snapping and event #biting the carer. This is completely inappropriate and potentially very #dangerous behavio...ur, so I went out to see them. We often see #collies that are having #reactivity issues. Theyre bred to an almost #ocd level of focus, but this has also placed their nerves on the outside of their skin, making them overly #sensitive to #environmental changes, movement and #spatialpressure Now, during our 2 hour session, he never tried to bite me. But I could tell he wanted to multiple times. Understanding #dogbodylanguage is absolutely crucial to these dogs and their owners. As is understanding what #reinforcement really means. That being said, at the end of the session, he couldnt get enough of me. Dogs appreciate it when we speak to them clearly! If youre having issues with your dog, please get a #balancedtrainer in to show you how to talk to them. It is sometimes to late, but it is absolutely never too early! Get on top of it now! 06.01.2022 Reloading the #clicker Ive been doing a lot of online consults recently, and I often use the clicker to demonstrate timing. My boys go a little nuts when theyre locked out of my work space and hear the clicker. Click, click, click, and never any rewards. ... So we had to do a quick session of reloading the clicker and rebuilding that drive to get it again :)

05.01.2022 Dobby, the future #assistancedog assisted me with some #puppy #socialisation today! Ivy is a beautiful little 10 week old #goldenretrieverpuppy and her owner hopes to turn her into a #therapydog for children! How cool is that?! Ivy was all over the place when we first arrived, pulling, jumping, barking all in order to get our attention and to be allowed to play with Dobby. It is very common for #puppies to have this intense focus on other dogs. They are, after all, #packanima...ls But in the long run, #reinforcing this #hyperarousal by letting them meet the other dog in a wired up state, will never benefit you! Make them calm before the get to meet! Put their food to work and make them more interested in you than anything else around them! #puppysocialization and #habituation is, in my opinion, the most important thing to focus on when you've got a new #pup in the house. Do NOT - and I cannot stress this enough - take your puppy to the #dogpark and let them freely run around! One of two things will happen: 1. Your puppy will have the best time of its life, #selfreinforcing with all the other dogs, and actively learning to ignore you OR 2. It will get rugby tackled by another big dog, who doesn't know how to play appropriately (because that is 98% of dogs in a dog park) and will become fearful of other dogs Socialisation is NOT about overstimulating your puppy around other dogs. It is about teaching them to remain calm and focused around distractions. Always consider what you are reinforcing and don't leave anything to chance! I am doing multiple zoom calls a day, trying my best to relay as much information as I can, but it is just not the same as being there.... Anyways, it is what it is. I will continue to guide online, until I can assist you in real life. But here is a video of me #travelling and assisting #puppies at the same time! Just under a year ago, we went to the #solomonislands where there are plenty of dogs and #pups around. Due to limited access to education and income, many of these dogs are suffering from issues that can actually be solved quite easily. Yes, my two #herdingdogs I can count on one hand how many days they have not had a walk, in the eight years weve lived together. I get contacted by a lot of people with #highdrive #dogs who are experiencing #behaviouralproblems be it #germanshepherds #kelpies #bordercollies or #germanshorthairedpointers... I often find that the owners of these dogs are not giving them anywhere near enough #structure #exercise and #enrichment If you have a #bordercollie it is not fair to walk them three times a week and expect them to sleep for the rest of the time! "But my dog pulls on the lead and its not nice walking it." Well, then take its breakfast, put it in your pocket and start working on #looseleashwalking "My dog lunges at other dogs and I get embarrassed!" Well, cooping it up inside is certainly NOT going to help that issue! Get a #balancedtrainer to help you with the #reactivity Your #dog should be walked every day. Rain, hail or shine. Your dog should have to work for its dinner. Your dog should be trained in #obedience and given the opportunity to explore new smells and places. Youll be amazed at how many problems are drastically reduced by simply increasing exercise and obedience.
