11.01.2022 On 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare. With their armies retreating and close to collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, bringing to an end the First World War. From the summer of 1918, the five divisions of the Australian Corps had been at the forefront of the allied advance to victory. Beginning with their stunning success at the battle of Hamel in July, they helped to turn the tide of the war at Amiens i...n August, followed by the capture of Mont St Quentin and Pèronne, and the breaching of German defences at the Hindenburg Line in September. By early October the exhausted Australians were withdrawn from battle. They had achieved a fighting reputation out of proportion to their numbers, but victory had come at a heavy cost. They suffered almost 48,000 casualties during 1918, including more than 12,000 dead. In the four years of the war more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas, and more than 60,000 of them had died. The social effects of these losses cast a long shadow over the postwar decades. 10.01.2022 Junior Representative Basketball (VJBL) Try Outs for 2020-2021 Season Blackburn Vikings are seeking expressions of interest from junior players intending to try out for Vikings VJBL teams in the 20-21 season. Try-outs will certainly look and feel different in the way they are conducted this year. Younger age groups are encouraged to try out, with 1st season discounts to apply. ... Expressions of Interest give the club the understanding of how many players we are likely to have at tryouts for each age group so we can structure an appropriate tryout schedule when the government COVID restrictions allow. It will also allow us to have the required coaching staff on hand for each age group. Please note that due to COVID-19 restrictions, ALL players will need to be pre-registered for tryouts to ensure we are able to meet maximum numbers of participants, coaches and safety officers for each court during our tryouts. 07.01.2022 EDJBA Update During the week, we received an update from the EDJBA Committee of Management (CoM) regarding the 2020/21 Summer season. Whilst we do not have all the answers to the exact date of a return to basketball, there is some light at the end of this COVID-19 tunnel. The proposed Summer 2020/21 season dates is the timeline that was agreed upon by the EDJBA CoM. These dates are not confirmed and heavily rely on the easing of Government restrictions and Basketball Vic...toria approval; however these dates give all clubs the ability to start to plan for the return.
