06.01.2022 Got a lovely message from Gary Humphris. In the 1930s a big chestnut stallion of his fathers got away and joined the brumbies, he was a good racehorse named Ma...rking Time. He escaped from Bairnsdale area. People knew the names of escapee horses back then, but over time these names are lost to us, and are only learned by this sort of sharing of oral histories, and sleuthing through old newspapers; and few horses made the papers. Garys family has a great history with horses, his great grandfather broke and trained Walers for the Light Horse, including horses to go to India in WW1 era, and after the war he trained trotters and pacers. Marking Time does not appear to be in the Australian Stud Book, but a lot of racehorses were unregistered then. Those researching may like some horse names, for bloodlines in some brumbies. Someone may like to start collecting some of these names. Quality horses got away for well over century, and that is why the brumbies were such a valuable commodity back then, providing work for many. They made excellent army horses, carriage horses, family and work horses. Trusted by doctors to pull their carriages and carry patients. They still have value as camera herds, and for very safe, hardy riding horses. To bring this lovely story alive, posting with some brumby photos here, and a couple of news clippings.
