25.01.2022 Hi everyone, Firstly, thank you to all of the vets, vet nurses and other staff within the veterinary industry. YOU’RE ALL AMAZING!! . I know the staff that I work with are absolutely fantastic, putting in long and committed hours of work daily! I hope you can all take a few minutes to read this and perhaps watch the program (link below). ... Last night I watched a program on SBS called INSIGHT. The episode explored issues within the industry of Veterinary Science, both from a vets and a vet nurses point of view. As my dad knows, I’m currently studying at university in hopes to become a veterinarian. He’s always told me, ‘you’ll be so much better off doing medicine’. Classic daughter, when dad said this to me I thought, ‘you don’t need to tell me dad I know the truth about this industry... it’s not easy.’ However, after watching INSIGHT I actually second guessing myself. Vet science is a hard industry to work in, ask any vet/vet nurse; what I wasn’t expecting was the abuse they described that occurs throughout the industry. Vet nurses, supporting staff, receptionists and veterinarians alike, cop much abuse from clients. And ask people to pay their account and many give further abuse, ending with ‘you’re only in it for the money’. The average vet wage for all vets in Australia is $74,000. When you realise the hours they put in, this calculates to between 12 18 dollars per hour. So the despair felt by many workers in the industry has resulted in the profession have an incredibly high suicide rate. Four times higher than the population and twice higher than any professional in Australia. Don’t just take my word from all this; watch Season 2020 Episode 17 Veterinary Care on SBS on Demand or your computer. It’ll shock you.
