25.01.2022 1 minute. To remember those who have died in war. To acknowledge those who suffered, and are still suffering. And to pray for a future of peace.... Lest we forget.
25.01.2022 Did you know that the St Vincent de Paul Society was founded in 1833? The founding members started the very first conference. Each conference is a group made up for volunteer members and these conferences now exist all across the world to provide assistance via home visitation or appointment to people in need. In the Canberra/Goulburn region we have 50 conferences who provide emergency assistance to people experiencing disadvantage. Our members will help with each individual'...s needs and this can be by providing assistance with food, petrol or bills. Our conference members also provide the comfort that their is someone there for people to turn to. Conference 'members' are volunteers who actively make a difference in their local community. We have conferences throughout Australia including areas like Boorowa, Eden, Jindabyne, Gungahlin, Queanbeyan, and Temora to name just a few. If you would like to learn more or get involved in a rewarding way to volunteer, please visit: https://www.vinnies.org.au/pa/Get_Involved/Become_a_member/

23.01.2022 Congratulations to Luke and Matt who completed the Canberra Marathon last weekend and fundraised along the way for Vinnies. Before the race Luke said "the reason we decided to support Vinnies started with [us] noticing the extent of homelessness in Canberra and feeling like making a contribution to efforts to help people out in this situation. Training for a marathon feels monumentally trivial in comparison with this." Pictured are Luke and Matt along with their friend Dav...id before they started the mammoth run. If you'd like to support Luke and Matt's fundraising for Vinnies services, you can still donate online at: https://canberramarathon2020.everydayhero.com//bleeding-he

16.01.2022 As we come into the warmer months, it’s a good time to start thinking about ways to keep your home cool this summer! Did you know you can use everyday household items to help with the insulation and thermal performance of your home? Bubble wrap can be used to insulate windows Contact paper can be used to stick over vents while not in use and is easily peeled off Corflute or plastic can be used to make pelmets for curtains on tracks... Towels can be used at the bottom of doors to stop draughts Shade your walls and windows with leafy plants Stay comfortable this summer and help lessen your environmental impact. 12.01.2022 Towamba is a small community inland from Eden on the Far South Coast. This was an area badly affected by the Black Summer bushfires. As part of the Vinnies Community Bushfire Grants the local area received funding to provide community facilities. These were shade sails to cover a children’s play area, a basketball hoop and small court, and a community meeting area with barbecue, tables and benches. At a community organized event to celebrate the completion of the installatio...n, community members commented on how it made them feel that they had not been forgotten. Others noted that it was bringing people together to interact after year's of separation and that it 'opened a door to the community'. We hope that the facilities and then sense of community that they are helping to foster bring much joy to the Towamba community as they continue to recover from the trauma of last summer's bushfires.
12.01.2022 Social Inclusion Week is on from 21 - 29 November! It's a week to connect, collaborate and celebrate diversity and help make all Australians feel included. At Vinnies we are proud to have a diverse group of volunteers, members and employees that shape who we are as a Society. Social Inclusion Week says that one of the simplest things we can do to build caring and inclusive communities, is to reach out to those around us. This week we recommend doing just that! Reach out to people in your life to show you care and to help others feel apart of community.

08.01.2022 Many Australians, like David and his family, are facing hardship for the first time and have suddenly found themselves frightened about how they will keep a roof over their head and put food on the table let alone celebrate on Christmas Day. Vinnies is taking pressure off families who are at breaking point by providing food hampers, emotional support, and help with essentials. Your donation can help to provide this support to families in need. Please donate at https://bit.ly/3nga8nf
05.01.2022 The Vinnies Blue Door recently received the 2020 Argyle Housing Support Agency Award. We're thrilled that the Blue Door team's passion and commitment to work with the community at Ainslie Village has been recognised with this award! Nominees for this award are recognised within Argyle Housing as being professional and respectful with tenants, for having a great working relationship with Argyle and being committed to helping tenants sustain tenancies and achieve positive social outcomes in their lives. Congratulations to the Blue Door team!
02.01.2022 Last week's announcement by the Government to further reduce the JobSeeker payment will leave recipients receiving just $51 per day, inching back to the unreasonable $40 per day rate. The supplementary payments introduced earlier this year in response to COVID have allowed recipients to live with dignity and not be required to choose between feeding themselves that day, paying the energy bill or purchasing essential medication. Analysis is now showing this cut will force 330,...000 more people into poverty raising the amount of people living beneath the poverty line to an alarming 3.82 million people. Vinnies is calling for JobSeeker, Youth Allowance and other income support payments to be raised for good. #RaisetheRateforGood #RaisetheRate
01.01.2022 Families like David’s are facing a Christmas like no other. David lost his job as soon as COVID hit. He is the primary earner in the family, and the sudden loss of income put him, his wife Kate, and their three teenage daughters, in a situation they’d never faced before. With your support, the Vinnies team is able to support families like David through this time with assistance with food, bills and much more.
