19.01.2022 Carmel Hanson, local Hunter social justice advocate, has seen the difference that a secure and affordable home has for vulnerable locals in the region. With a residential address, you have a place to store your belongings, your healthcare professionals know where they can reach you, you have neighbours that know you, and your children have a place to grow and call home, she said. It’s more than a sense of permanency having a home plugs you back into society. Sister Hans...on looks to the state government to reduce the housing waitlist and asks for a similar commitment from the federal government to ensure people are protected when they fall on hard times. Join our Vinnies Social Justice Network and help us combat homelessness in the hunter, go to socialjustice.vinnies.org.au or message us for more information https://newcastleweekly.com.au/vinnies-calls-for-more-soci/ See more

16.01.2022 We were overwhelmed by the generosity of our school communities in the Hunter last year and the thought the children showed towards those doing it especially tough at Christmas. We may have packed up the tinsel and put up a new calendar but there will always be need for the services provided by St Vincent de Paul Society and your support big or small throughout the year. You can continue to support Australian families at breaking point by donating at https://bit.ly/3nInLLG

11.01.2022 Congratulations and thank you to all participants of the Vinnies Community Sleepout who slept rough last night helping to raise awareness of homelessness and much needed funds to help others in need experiencing disadvantage across North East NSW.

09.01.2022 In 2016, around 19,400 children (0.4%) aged 014 were homeless on Census night. Although the pandemic has brought many troubling times to us all, this year it has allowed children for the first time ever to participate in our Community Sleepout that is usually reserved for 18+ and held at Maitland Gaol. Now, from the safety of their own homes, just like Sarah and Evie Kemp, they're able to have discussions and experiences of what it's like to be uncomfortable to sleep somewh...ere unfamiliar. It's not too late to engage your family in our virtual sleepout on Friday 23 October or support the event with a donation. 05.01.2022 This #RemembranceDay we recognise and honour our Australians veterans. Those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, those who have suffered, and are still suffering in service to our country. We stand with you and support you. Lest we forget

04.01.2022 COVID-19 brought a year of stress and uncertainty for year 12 students across the hunter and forced many schools, like St Mary's Catholic College, Gateshead, to cancel their year 12 formal. Rather than let it get them down the fantastic teachers and students all donned some amazing second hand outfits supporting local charities and had their own event at their school. And they look smashing! Well done students and best wishes for the future!

04.01.2022 While usually held at Maitland Gaol, this year’s Maitland Community Sleepout is taking place from backyards, cars and couches in the hunter region as locals rally to support those in need. All donations will help people doing it tough in the Hunter Region. It’s not too late to register! Make a difference while you at https://bit.ly/37oHmfA

01.01.2022 Thank you again to all participants who slept rough for the 2020 Vinnies Community Sleepout held on Friday night. The wild weather last night and today must be difficult for those who are homeless and will be doing it tough to keep dry. Across NSW the total amount raised so far is approximately $133,000, donations are open until the end of November.

01.01.2022 Imagine a world where everyone has a home that in a community that is inclusive, supportive and accessible to everyone, improving health and social outcomes for all. Vinnies is helping to make this 'imagining' a reality by building Social Affordable Housing across the Hunter and advocating for Raise the Rate among other initiatives. This Anti-Poverty Week 11-17 October, join us in raising awareness that having a home is a human right, not a privilege. #antipovertyweek #VinniesNSW #vinniescommunitysleepout
