25.01.2022 While we welcome the move for cash payments to welfare recipients in the budget, far more is needed for a sustainable solution for vulnerable people to be supported during this critical time, including a permanent increase to Jobkeeper. The targeting of this budget has missed the most vulnerable in our community Our NSW CEO Jack de Groot discussed with ABC News last night. Significant investment in social and affordable housing are needed to help people on very low incomes... from experiencing homelessness. The Federal Government has missed their responsibility. Others now need to step up because it’s essential to both economic stimulus and avoiding further poverty Read more on our response at https://bit.ly/34DBfRL

19.01.2022 In Penrith alone, there are currently almost 1,700 applicants on the social housing waitlist. There are many factors which impact the ability to afford a home in the private rental market, with single parents and people with disabilities or mental health issues often struggling to afford rent on single or low incomes. To address this need, we encourage the government to build 5,000 new homes each year across the state for the next 10 years. Join our Social Justice Network in advocating for issues like social housing at socialjustice.vinnies.org.au

Our Community Sleepouts last month have raised over $155,000 so far, which will go a long way to helping so many people in our local communities who are doing it tough around our state. But it’s not over yet. We are still accepting donations until the end of November so there is still time to get in those last minute donations. Donate today at https://bit.ly/33nWfMj

16.01.2022 The state government’s $812 million budgeted for social housing will deliver almost 1,300 new social houses. However, with over 110,00 people on the waitlist for social housing, the need is still far greater than this outcome can provide. While we are disappointed this announcement falls short of meeting the level of need in the community, Explains our CEO Jack de Groot, We acknowledge the NSW government’s decision to include funding in the state budget and hope it encourages the federal government to make an investment in social housing so that everyone has access to a safe place to live. We will continue to call on the government and advocate for everyone to have a safe and secure home.

13.01.2022 The 2020 Federal Budget was a missed opportunity to support people at risk of poverty. Our NSW CEO, Jack de Groot, has concerns the budget fails to provide a clear future for people who have lost work, or don’t have enough hours to get by without the certainty of a secure safety net in place. It's vital that the government commits to a permanent increase to JobSeeker that allows people to live with dignity and plan beyond one day at a time. Mr de Groot said. As the budget a...lso leaves out social and affordable housing, we now look to the NSW Government to continue to lead on efforts to address homelessness, including through significant investment in new social housing to ensure everyone has a place to call home. Read our full response to the 2020 Budget at https://bit.ly/34DBfRL

12.01.2022 In recent times, the NSW Government have made promising steps to address street homelessness. In the face of a pandemic, temporary accommodation was quickly provided with additional support from charities like Vinnies, and permanent homes were provided for the most vulnerable through projects like Together Home. These efforts have shown what can be achieved when keeping people safe and protected is made a priority, and are positive steps towards the goal to halving street homelessness by 2025. However, if unemployment hits 10% as predicted, homelessness could rise by 21%. Ultimately the rate of income-support such as Jobseeker and availability of affordable housing for people on low incomes will be a significant factor in the rate of homelessness post-pandemic. https://raisetherate.org.au/

11.01.2022 Vinnies NSW calls on the NSW government to step up and lead with a major funding commitment for new social housing. 10.01.2022 On Monday we unveiled a new plaque at our Marian Centre, acknowledging the Traditional Owners of the land which it stands on, followed by a smoking ceremony conducted by Brendan Kerin from the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council. Staff and clients of the centre, which provides crisis accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence, were invited to cleanse themselves in the smoke before the ashes were buried in the garden. Read the fully story at https://bit.ly/2U8sH0i We are so grateful to Brendan for a moving ceremony, and for sharing part of his story and his culture with us. 09.01.2022 While we welcome the government’s decision to extend the Jobseeker coronavirus supplement to March next year, we’re disappointed by its further reduction. People who have lost jobs due to the pandemic will need ongoing support for some time yet, and this reduction will leave people currently supported by Jobseeker with just over $50 per day. We are also concerned by over 234,000 jobseekers having their payments suspended since mutual obligation was reinstated. Punitive actio...n is rarely effective, and right now in these difficult times, more support is essential to help people get back on track. Explains Claire Victory, Vinnies National President. We are calling for an independent, expert group to monitor and advise government on income and support payment levels that meet basic living needs, and will keep people out of poverty. Vinnies is here to help, anyone impacted by this reduction to Jobseeker supplement is welcome to reach out for assistance on 13 18 12.

07.01.2022 Generous donations to our Bushfire Appeal helped develop the Vinnies Community Grants Program. Recently $20,000 in funds was allocated for the Thungutti Local Aboriginal Land Council to develop a cultural burning team, working with non-Indigenous landowners and the RFS to protect the land using traditional fire management methods. This program is helping local communities impacted by bushfires to fund the projects they’ve identified for rebuilding and recovery.

06.01.2022 Domestic and family violence is startlingly common, with one woman killed each week at the hands of a current or former partner. For mothers like Jenny, accessing assistance and support can be a huge factor in rebuilding their lives. When Jenny arrived at one of our Domestic Violence Refuges in NSW, she felt like she’d lost her humanity, but our refuge gave her breathing space to heal and grow. I came to know that I was still human when I was in the refuge, because it was a ...place where I could focus on myself as well Read Jenny's full story on our blog at https://bit.ly/336w2BG Thanks to SUPRÉ and their customers for supporting women like Jenny to access the help they need, with funds raised through Supre Foundation in NSW donated to Vinnies domestic and family violence support services across the state. 05.01.2022 Research has found that providing a safe and permanent home with wraparound services is the most cost-effective way to prevent homelessness. Between the funding needed for health, emergency, social and homelessness services for people sleeping rough, a much greater difference can be made through investment in social housing. There is also a great cost of life, as people who have experienced long-term rough sleeping have an average life expectancy of only 47 years. Investing in social and affordable housing supports the most vulnerable in our communities, including those experiencing or facing homelessness and rising domestic violence. Join the call for more social housing this Anti-Poverty Week at www.vinnies.org.au/socialhousing

01.01.2022 The new national children’s commissioner, Anne Hollands, is concerned about the impacts that decreasing the Jobseeker payment by $100 per week will have on the wellbeing of children. The financial circumstances of a family have a direct impact both now and in the future, with recent studies showing those who experience poverty during childhood are three times more likely to experience financial disadvantage later in life. Their wellbeing is best protected when those around them have their wellbeing protected too.
