23.01.2022 Way back in the day if we wanted to travel and enter someone’s land you would light a fire. That fire would be seen by the elders of that tribe. The elders would send a runner and we would pass on our message stick to explain why were passing through. These are the words of Wailwan/Wiradjuri Elder Aunty Irene Norman poet, artist, storyteller. Yesterday, we were delighted to invite Aunty Irene Norman to our online storytelling session during NAIDOC Week (8-15 November). A...unty Irene, renowned for bringing a deeply personal perspective to our country’s 65,000+ year history, regaled us with story and song and had every one of us in the palm of her hand. We were also delighted to welcome or should we say? Give a warm ‘wominjeka’ to our co-hosts Marion Olen, a proud Torres Straits Islander woman and Vinnies Soup Van volunteer, and Indigenous engagement and inclusion facilitator and mean didgeridoo player Johnny Briggs. Here’s a snapshot of what we learnt. Before colonisation: There were well over 1m Indigenous people. There were 800 dialects There were 250 languages But as Aunty Irene says: There. Is. Hope. We need to take step backwards to move forward. Together. Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs) bring people together. Vinnies Victoria is proud to be taking our first steps towards reconciliation. We are embarking on our Reflect RAP (the first of four stages: Reflect, Innovate, Stretch, Elevate) and are committed to reflecting upon and implementing these learnings in everything we do. To find out more about what reconciliation really means or to hear more wonderful stories from our country’s 65,000+ year history, please visit https://www.naidoc.org.au/get-involved/2020-theme

20.01.2022 Today at the 11th hour (of the 11th day of the 11th month) we mark Remembrance Day. What is the significance of this moment in time? It was during that time on November 1918 that the gunfire on the Western Front was momentarily silenced, and hostilities put aside in order to secure a peace settlement. World War 1 had mobilised 70 million people and left between 9 and 13 million dead. The allied nations chose this day and time for the commemoration of their war dead. So toda...y, at the 11th hour of this 11th day and 11th month, we ask you all to please keep our Australian veterans in your thoughts and prayers. We stand with you and support you. Lest we forget.
20.01.2022 How much does your household need to get by? Cost of living measures how much income households need to survive and sets the ‘poverty line’ which 3.24 million Australians are currently living under. Here at Vinnies we aim to shine a light on the human side of what happens when the figures don’t add up. ... And we offer practical solutions for Victorians in need: last year we provided $5.3 million of essentials that people shouldn’t have to ask for.

15.01.2022 Meet Julie, the talented volunteer from Vinnies Warragul! Julie is standing next to one of her brilliant creations! She makes sun catchers from old CDs, and flowers from plastic drink bottles. She also made the display stand! Vinnies Warragul sells the sun catchers for $2 and invites customers to pick a flower and brighten their day. Julie’s display has also created lots of conversations with customers and brought a smile to so many peoples’ faces. We hope Julie’s creativity and generosity brightens your day too.
14.01.2022 Meet Chelsea If you’re looking to be inspired, then read on! Chelsea from Thomas Carr College sewed 100 face masks by hand and donated them to Vinnies so we could give them to Victorians experiencing homelessness. ... I chose to make masks for people experiencing homelessness because often they don’t have access to them or the means to buy them, Chelsea said. I did enjoy making them and I’ve done a lot of charity work at school. It’s just me and what I like to do. Chelsea has also participated in Vinnies School Sleepout four times in a row. Thank you Chelsea for your inspiring dedication to do #goodworks! https://bit.ly/3lNALzy

09.01.2022 Did you hear? We have something a little exciting to announce! Vinnies Victoria International Student Aid initiative has been shortlisted for the Volunteering Victoria ‘COVID-19 Innovation and Resilience Award’. From the start of the COVID-19 crisis, we were aware of the many international students stranded in Australia with little to no income. By July we were ready to launch our program in a dedicated call centre, but stage 4 restrictions required a speedy change of pla...ns to quickly get our volunteers ready to volunteer from home. Since July we have assisted more than 500 struggling international students with food and basic necessities. We are extremely proud of our Young Vinnies volunteers and employees for their dedication to this new Good Works program. This award recognises predominately volunteer-run organisations for demonstrating innovation and resilience in adapting to accommodate COVID requirements and changes while still delivering high-quality services to their community.
09.01.2022 We didn’t let 2020 stop us from running our Vinnies Roadshow activities! Usually, our Roadshow youth team run kids’ activity days in regional areas, but like most events this year, it was virtual! The team saw a need for families who may be struggling to keep kids entertained inside the house all day, and wanted a fun, innovative way to reach them! So they created and filmed activities that were shared to the children who normally participate - all over Victoria! These in...cluded: How to make a paper crane Designing a backyard obstacle course Creating juggling balls How to make sock puppets and more! The team also made up 100 activity packs for the kids to go along with the videos, with all the required materials! And if you’re keen, here’s how you can make your own backyard obstacle course! https://bit.ly/3n9qxdf

08.01.2022 Today marks NAIDOC Week (8-15 November) Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for more than 65,000 years.... The people of the Bidawal Country in the far north east. The Gunaikurnai in Gippsland. The Boonwurrung in the Bayside suburbs. The Wurundjeri in the area of Melbourne north of the Yarra River where our Box Hill office is located; the people in Dja Dja Warrung country in the North West and the people in Wadawurrung country in the West. The people of the Taungurung Country in the North of the State; the Gunditjmara in lands in the far south-west and the Barenji Gadjin lands in the Far North West lands bordering the desert. Always Was, Always Will Be acknowledges that hundreds of nations and cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land to sustainably provide for their future. These groups are not, and have never been, monoculture ‘aboriginal tribes’; they are distinct and proud nations, with their own culture, language and connection to country. And Vinnies Victoria acknowledges that we live, work, love and play in the country of these traditional custodians. During NAIDOC Week, take the time to find out more about the richness of our oldest nations here: https://www.naidoc.org.au/get-involved/2020-theme
