25.01.2022 We have been away on the Amalfi coast and Provence in France for four days. We had a farewell feast on Saturday night I cooked and insisted everyone dressed for my candlelit dinner. Tu ne te prives de rien a French friend commented. Question: How much do you think the outfits Jenny and I are wearing in the photograph cost? Answer: See at the bottom of this post.... I went to the launch of Annabel Crabb and Wendy Sharpes new book Special Delivery at Corrie Perkins bookshop. I love the quote in the introduction to this enticing food book "Food is a language. Within its rolling landscape of dialects and exotic tongues, so many things can be said." Annabel and I have a lot in common - Annabel reads voraciously - she loves gingernuts, the writing of Frank Moorehouse for different reasons than I do, the books of Helen Garner because she writes about hard stuff' the same reason I love Garners books. Most importantly Annabel seems to have a great capacity for friendship especially with Wendy the consultant on her TV show The Kitchen Cabinet and co-author of the book Special Delivery. Best childhood friends, they share a love of vintage clothes and cooking When my first child was born, Wendy cooked for me for a week. Every morning she left a basket inside the downstairs door of my London flat with something fabulous for breakfast, lunch and dinner. She told us that Wendy now lives in London and recently sent her an exquisite gold tissue vintage evening dress that she had purchased at auction. I can just imagine Annabel daintily picking up the golden rustling skirt and floating away like some exquisite wasp. I have always thought wasps have beautiful faces and Annabel always has a sting in her tail. In Kitchen Cabinet Annabel tries to give politicians a subjective account of themselves. There is no doubt that we get an insight into the lives of our politicians and how they live their lives even though the glimpses may be what they did not intend. The Bill Shorten interview was interesting for what it didnt say about the Leader of the Opposition. Annabel asked What were you like as a kid ? Shorten replied I didnt like onions. That could have been a line by J D Salinger. The interview was so guarded that Shorten committed TV suicide right in front of our eyes. But Shortens' final line gave him away - the fraternal boast that I was the better pianist. He just could not help himself. Answer to the question: Of course we werent on the Amalfi coast we were in Anglesea Jennys beautiful linen pleated shawl with pearl button and velvet cord trimming and my Missoni-like top were purchased at the Anglesea Op Shop for $3 each from the furniture section, they are both furniture runners you can find quality anywhere if you look for it. 13.01.2022 The Collectors - Hat Matters Video As my hat collection grew I became aware that the ABC Collectors TV program were looking for a hat collector. When I spoke to the producer I received an enthusiastic response. Since the 1970s- 2008 I had collected well over 200 hats, most of them vintage. In September I went to Hobart ABC TV for an interview with The Collectors panel.
