22.01.2022 Rutherglen Park - west side view, dated approximately 1890-1915. (Museums Victoria, Vic Collections). In 1881 the Ovens and Murray Advertiser detailed the botanical attributes of the Rutherglen Park. They say there were 400 Elm trees planted throughout the parklands and avenues of pine trees along five to six various pathways leading in different directions, providing lovely sylvan walks for townsfolk and visitors. (Ref O&M Advertiser 13/10/1881). ... In 1915 Mr. G.H. Adcock, Principal of Rutherglen Viticultural College, provided the Rutherglen Burrough Council with a comprehensive list detailing the many species of native trees that would be suitable for replacement planting within the park. (Ref: Council Minutes Rutherglen 1915).

22.01.2022 This beautiful old house has been shown here previously, but there was little known about it. We now know a bit more of the background thanks to the State Library of NSW. It is a 1895 pic of a house owned by the Wilson family Rutherglen.

12.01.2022 The Buckley Vineyard HICKAMORA Lake Moodemere/Norong. Hoping someone may know the old location of Allan Knox Buckley’s vineyard and wheat farm at Norong/Lake Moodemere. The property in the 1890’s was called Hickamora. His descendants are interested in the original location and hope to visit in the future. Allan Knox Buckley was the first appointed Head Teacher/Headmaster at Rutherglen State School. He was a significant character in Rutherglen as he was a vigneron..., wheat farmer, teacher, shire councillor, shire engineer, businessman, mover and shaker for the Rutherglen Wine Company, along with pastoral ventures in Jerilderie. Whilst we know his house locations within Rutherglen, it has been hard to pinpoint his original vineyard location. Allan Knox Buckley also won agricultural awards for prize winning development of his Steinwedel Wheat crops. Allan Knox Buckley below. (Ref : Buckley family descendants and State Library , Vic collections). Thanks, appreciate any information.

11.01.2022 Has anybody heard of Rutherglen township being referred to as Nimbi Rari? I accidentally came across a reference to it in the Corowa Free Press Friday 7/10/1881. If you know anything more about Rutherglen being referred to as this, please let us know, many of us will be interested. Thanks.

09.01.2022 Gone but not forgotten! Prentice Freehold school recycled and relocated. The story boards tell the shifting phases. In 1898 The Victorian Government Gazette advertised for a female teaching assistant class 8 to assist at the Prentice Freehold School. ... In 1901 Prentice Freehold school had an average attendance of 83% from the 105 enrolments. This was considered quite good given a lot of the children were required to undertake a heavy workload of chores to help their families, this also impacted on their attendance. In 1936 the original building was contracted for salvage and demolition to A.McQuade, builder for the amount of 53 pounds. In 1946 Prentice Freehold student Colin Grant Francis was awarded a student scholarship of 20 pounds per year for a period of four years. This was a substantial help to a small community family and a remarkable achievement by Colin Francis who faced stiff competition right across Victoria.

05.01.2022 The Sunday Creek Drowning January of 1895. A pre 1895 photograph of Valentine Walliker. Valentine Walliker died at 34 years old when swimming in the Sunday Creek at Gassies vineyard, (as we know it today, Pfeiffers). He had come on an assisted passage to Australia with his wife Margaret Weatherell Walliker in 1884. After landing in Brisbane they made their way to Melbourne and lived in the Richmond area for a time where Valentine undertook work as a bricklayer, a trade he... brought with him from England. Whilst in Melbourne they had three boys. In 1890 Valentine’s wife Margaret died one week after giving birth to baby George, and the child died just three months later. This left Valentine a widow with two young boys aged at that time about 2 and 3 years. In late 1894 Valentine took up a work contract with a Mr. Culbertson to undertake the bricklaying work for the new Gassies distillery being built at Wahgunyah on the bank of the Sunday Creek. On the 12th of January 1895 Valentine and two work mates went for a swim in the Sunday Creek after a long, hot and hard days work. Valentine got into difficulties whilst swimming and despite one of his friends, a Mr. Chambers, who tried to assist him, he drowned! Valentine’s two children, John and Valentine junior were now left without a mother or father. The local Wahgunyah Temperance society organised a fund raising event to assist in financial support for the young boys (now aged at about 7 and 8 years). A Mr. Yates from Yates farm Carlyle also organised for donations such as goods and clothing to be forwarded to him in order to assist the young boys next of kin in supporting them. The boys went to live with Valentine’s sister Laura Simpson who had settled in the Sassafras area. The boys integrated with their cousins and attended Monbulk Primary School. Sons John went on to become a clergyman and Valentine Junior served and survived WW1. Valentine is buried at Carlyle Cemetery in the Wesleyan section, grave number 809. The grave is unmarked and was difficult to find references as he had been interred under the name Williker as opposed to Walliker. Many grave identifiers/markers of that time were made of wood and perished after so many years. A sad story indeed and Valentine Walliker is one of many men who came to the area for work, and in their own way, contributed to our rich and varied local history. A big thanks to Kylie Barton who has shared her enthusiasm, passion, and worked with me to uncover the story of Valentine Walliker.
