25.01.2022 Many dog owners believe that having your dog meet other dogs is a vital part of socialization. It is not. On-leash greetings will actually have the opposite e...ffect. Here's why I will always say "No" to on leash greetings and why you should too: 1. Leashes get in the way of communication. When dogs greet each other naturally, they will approach from the side. They will circle each other while sniffing, and then they will either move on, initiate play, or fight. On leash greetings are unnatural. Meeting face to face is considered rude or threatening in dog language. On leash, dogs only have about a 6 foot radius to do this little greeting dance and this can result in mixed signals. 2. Tension causes reactivity. Forced greetings can trigger a fight or flight response, but because of the leash, the flight response is taken away. Even the sweetest dog can buckle under the tension and try to create space. Dogs create space by barking, growling, lunging, and biting. Getting repeatedly pushed over the limit will result in this reaction whenever they see another dog. 3. It reinforces poor behavior. Lets pretend that you let your child pick out a toy every single time you go to the store. Then one day you decide that they have enough toys so you tell them "no". This will probably result in a tantrum right? Well now lets compare this to a dog. Lets pretend you let your dog meet another dog every time you go out. Your dog is so excited for the interactions and pulls towards the other dog because they learned that this is an acceptable behavior. (and you're reinforcing it by letting them interact with what they're pulling towards) But one day you just want to go for a nice walk instead of meeting someone. While you're pulling your dog away to avoid a greeting, your dog throws a loud barky temper tantrum. 4. You don't know the other dog. You also don't know how well the other dog owner knows how to read body language. The other dog could be aggressive or unsocialized. 5. It teaches your dog to value other dogs over you. If you let your pup greet others whenever they want, they will learn to value these greetings over you. This can put a strain on your relationship and cause frustrations for you both. Forcing your dog to repeatedly meet strange dogs that make them uncomfortable makes them lose trust in you as a protector. You should be the most important thing in your dog's life and they should be focused on and listening to you. 6. Dogs don't need to make dog friends all the time. Would you want to shake hands with every person you see? Then your dog doesn't need to sniff every dog they see. Many dog owners are under the impression that dogs need many friends but that is not the case. Better ways of socialization: - Training in the same space. Use other dogs as a training opportunity and reward your dog for focusing on you and remaining calm - Parallel walks. Walk alongside the other dog and it's owner without letting the two meet. They will get familiar with each other in a safe and structured way. What about off leash greetings? Off leash greetings are more ideal and less restricting, but for all the reasons stated above, I choose to not let dogs under my care meet any dogs we don't know. I don't trust the handling of the other dog owner if I don't know them. But also I want my dog to value me, and greetings are not in the best interest of my goals.

24.01.2022 Stroke has a new indicator! They say if you forward this to ten people, you stand a chance of saving one life. Will you send this along? Blood Clots/Stroke - Th...ey Now Have a Fourth Indicator, the Tongue: During a BBQ, a woman stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) ...she said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Jane went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Jane's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 PM Jane passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Jane would be with us today. Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead. It only takes a minute to read this. A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough. >>RECOGNIZING A STROKE<< Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S *Ask the individual to SMILE. T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. Chicken Soup) R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other that is also an indication of a stroke. A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved. I have done my part. Will you?

19.01.2022 | CUSHING’S DISEASE IN DOGS | Cushing’s disease can be life threatening, so it’s important to know how this disease affects our pets and the signs to look for. ...Proper diagnosis and a clear understanding of the disease is important in the long term management. Cushing’s disease is a condition in which an overproduction of hormones are produced by the adrenal glands (hyperadrenocorticism). The adrenal glands produce many vital substances that regulate several body functions. One of the most important substances produced by the adrenal gland is cortisol, which helps the body combat stress. Any decrease or excess of this hormone can cause a major disruption in a dog’s body, which can be life-threatening. Since Cushing’s disease is an overproduction of cortisol, this condition can cause serious health concerns among those affected. Though the one definition of Cushing’s disease is an overproduction of cortisol, there are a few different ways that a dog can become a Cushing’s patient. Knowing the exact cause of the disease is imperative in knowing the prognosis of each individual dog. The symptoms of Cushing’s disease are very often similar from case to case. Increased thirst Increased appetite Increased urination Thinning of the skin/ chronic skin infections Hair loss Slow hair growth Enlarged abdomen/ pot-bellied appearance Lethargy Excessive panting While Cushing’s disease may seem like a daunting diagnosis, it is important to keep in mind that this condition can be managed. An early diagnosis of the disease can help to prevent a poor outcome, so watching your pet closely is extremely important. Make sure to monitor your pets appearance, along with their food and water consumption, as this can help you determine if there may be a medical problem brewing.

18.01.2022 | Brown Snakes | Brown snakes are highly venomous snakes very common in SEQ. Be aware that it is now peak time for brown snakes babies to hatch. Their hatching... period ends around late january. This increases the number of snakes around. Please be aware of this when letting your pet outside or taking them for a walk. Signs of snakebite include lethargy, muscle tremors, sudden onset of weakness/wobbliness. If you believe your pet has been bitten by a snake please call the clinic immediately. If you find a snake near your pet, please bring it (or an image if alive) and your pet in. This way our veterinarians can determine what species of snake it is and provide the best care for your pet. 13.01.2022 WARNING!!! DO NOT GIVE THESE SO-CALLED "TREATS" TO YOUR DOGS!!! THEY CAN POTENTIALLY KILL THEM!! Just a little warning regarding the Xmas treats many stor...es are now starting to stock for dogs at Xmas. Many of these so called treats end up with the dog "enjoying" some time in a veterinary surgery over Christmas. The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China. The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell. Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes. On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde. If that wasn't bad enough, they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog. Leave them in the shop where they belong or if some well meaning person buys them for your dog put them safely away for later, then dispatch in the bin! Please be safe with your dogs! 05.01.2022 Ever picked up a pack of dog treats and had a look at the ingredient panel? Chances are you’ll find fake flavours, fillers and synthetics. That kind of food, o...ften processed at high temperatures, isn’t good enough for me, so why should I give it to my dogs? Our bake-at-home treats are all natural and healthy. Plus, they’re super simple to make. Just add water, roll flat and bake, and in less than 30 minutes, you’ll have truly all-natural treats you can feed guilt-free! https://bestiekitchen.com/pages/bake-at-home-treats

04.01.2022 This made me giggle!

04.01.2022 There is no one way to train a dog. In fact there are many ways to get to the desired goal. If you took 10 of the best trainers on the planet none of them would... do things exactly the same. Dogs don’t care about your ideology or your biases. They care about the connection and how they feel in your presence. They care about the clarity of your communication and your ability to understand theirs. They care about bettering their situation without harsh consequences. A dog suppressed out of a bad behavior is not a trained dog. A dog scared of making a mistake is not a trained dog. A dog that is confined to to a spot and not allowed to move is not a trained dog. It’s our job to bring out the best in each dog. No tool will ever bring out the best in a dog however it can help bring out the best in your training. Unfortunately it can also bring out the worst in your training and exploit your weaknesses and the dog will always pay the price for that. If success is achieved for the LONG TERM with a dog while doing so in a humane way and having compassion for the animal, the road you took to get there is not as important as the achievement. The animal comes first. Not your ego.

03.01.2022 The animal world can get be very funny this deserves to be shared
