25.01.2022 There are so many amazing people sharing resources and info on this at the moment. I will be sharing what resonates with me in my stories. Too many women walk away from birth with psychological or physical trauma that stays with them, sometimes for life. Women feel disempowered during birth, often from the time they seek care for their pregnancy. They are told you must do this and adhere to these guidelines. They are often not informed of ALL the risks and benefits that are i...nvolved in recommended procedures and interventions during labour and birth. This is happening even more during these times when a woman may only have 4 face to face appointments during their pregnancy. How can that be enough time to share knowledge with a woman? Continuity of midwifery care means working in partnership with women, sharing knowledge and advocating for a women when she is most vulnerable. All women should have access to this for their pregnancy, labour, birth and postpartum period. It won’t stop all birth trauma - but it is necessary start.

25.01.2022 Please sign. I am very serious about the safety of midwives during this time, but banning the use of water for women in labour is not evidence based, and it violates women’s rights to natural forms of pain relief in labour.

23.01.2022 Hey everyone I’ve been a bit quiet on the socials lately, so I thought this might be the perfect time to introduce myself properly on here. I’m Marnie, and I’ve been a midwife for 8 years now. I work at a public hospital, and I’ve just gone back to work after having 11 months off on maternity leave with my beautiful son, Alexander ... I’m also the owner and midwife behind Virago Midwifery, your answer to continuity of care in your pregnancy, birth and beyond. At the moment I’m focusing on pregnancy and postnatal periods, but I do hope to expand into birth support as the demand grows When I’m not working, you can find me drinking coffee on brunch dates with my hubby and pals, hitting the pavement and listening to crime podcasts with Alexander and my dog Hugo, or vegging out getting stuck in to a good Netflix doco. Oh, and I’m almost finished studying my Master of Primary Maternity Care so there’s that too I look forward to meeting and working with more women in our community, and supporting them to have a powerful pregnancy, birth and baby If you’re expecting and looking to connect, tell me about yourself in the comments, DM, email or call me #midwife #birth #midwifery #pregnancy #pregnant #birthwithoutfear #naturalbirth #postpartum #midwives #breastfeeding #childbirth #empoweredbirth #motherhood #newborn #midwifelife #baby #gentlebirth #childbirtheducation #birthbecomesher #womenshealth #positivebirth #birthmatters #womenempowerment #pregnantlife #morningtonpeninsula

17.01.2022 What is your experience with a midwife? What is your favourite experience as a midwife? I think for me, I love the continuity that midwifery care can offer. Getting to know a woman and her family during their childbearing journey and watching that family grow is a joy like no other. As a woman, I had some wonderful midwives provide my care during my journey. @lllllll_1991 saw me for a majority of my antenatal appointments, and listened and cared for me with love and attention... (as she does with all women who see her). She even fit me in on her lunch breaks if I couldn’t get an appointment with her, which I’ll always be grateful for. My best friend and best midwife @_karley90 was there for it all. She listened to my complaining, supported me through labour and beyond (she’s still supporting me 13 months down the track). And @cindyroberts2016 cared for me with compassion and expertise when the time came to meet my baby. There are so many more midwives who have guided me along my journey as a midwife and a mother, and I’m so grateful to you all. Share your love for midwives by commenting your best midwife memory on this post! #midwife #birth #midwifery #pregnancy #pregnant #birthwithoutfear #naturalbirth #postpartum #midwives #breastfeeding #childbirth #empoweredbirth #motherhood #newborn #midwifelife #baby #gentlebirth #childbirtheducation #birthbecomesher #womenshealth #positivebirth #birthmatters #womenempowerment #pregnantlife #morningtonpeninsula #ICM #internationaldayofthemidwife

15.01.2022 Happy International Women’s Day! I love this image! Just today I got up on my soap box in handover at work and shared my thoughts on how women need to support women for us to get ahead. I find it is so easy for us to compare and judge each other social media, but instead we should be lifting and supporting each other in real life. I am so lucky to be surrounded by women all day everyday in my work, as well as by all my beautiful friends and colleagues. Women are the best!... Let us support each other by lifting others @the_female_lead

15.01.2022 Congratulations to Sarah, Tim & big brother Charles on the arrival of baby George! George is the first Virago baby to be welcomed into the world and I couldn’t be more proud or excited for Sarah and Tim. Sarah’s pregnancy has not been without its challenges - chronic morning sickness, gestational diabetes requiring insulin, pre-eclampsia and a loooong induction of labour resulting in an emergency caesarean. Sarah’s goals for this pregnancy was to experience labour and success...fully breastfeed this baby - two things she didn’t get a chance to do with her first son, Charles. Despite all the odds, Sarah educated herself and advocated for herself throughout her pregnancy, labour and birth and even though it wasn’t all smooth sailing, she achieved her goals. I have loved caring for Sarah during her pregnancy journey, and I can’t wait to spend the next 6 weeks watching this beautiful family grow. #midwife #birth #midwifery #pregnancy #pregnant #birthwithoutfear #naturalbirth #postpartum #midwives #breastfeeding #childbirth #empoweredbirth #motherhood #newborn #midwifelife #baby #gentlebirth #childbirtheducation #birthbecomesher #womenshealth #positivebirth #birthmatters #womenempowerment #pregnantlife #morningtonpeninsula #caesareanbirth

14.01.2022 Happy International Day of the Midwife!!! I feel so privileged to be a midwife. I am invited to be a part of a woman’s most powerful, vulnerable, exciting and challenging time in their life. I take that very seriously, and do everything I can to make navigating this time as empowering as possible. This year, the International Confederation of Midwives recognise the central tenant of midwifery - being with women - and they have put out a call for women, midwives and famili...es to unite and call for more choice for women around safe maternity care. They hope do achieve this through these strategies: Inform everyone with an interest or background in health and justice that midwives are crucial to reducing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Celebrate the achievement of midwives and their contribution to improving sexual, reproductive, maternal and newborn health outcomes. Motivate policy makers to implement change by lobbying for adequate midwifery resources and recognition of the unique profession of midwives. Today I’ll spend the day posting about how midwives in Australia have the ability to contribute to every woman’s pregnancy journey. Stay tuned!

14.01.2022 We are now able to process same day Medicare rebates on our fancy new eftpos machine! But seriously, we do have our portable ELECTRONIC eftpos machine up and running for same day rebates. I do think it’s hilarious that we received the old click clack machine too. And yes, I have used one of these many times before back in my retail days. Our fancy new eftpos machine can also process health insurance rebates!... Contact Marnie at Virago Midwifery to have your antenatal and postnatal care in the comfort of your own home, with the same midwife for all of your appointments See more

13.01.2022 Love love love visiting this adorable family. Leon is going to be the best big brother ever

11.01.2022 Happy world breastfeeding week! Here is a picture of our very first breastfeed We have been lucky to have a lovely breastfeeding journey, 16 months and counting, but for some women it is one of the hardest things they’ll have to do. To me, world breastfeeding week is to raise the profile and importance of breastfeeding for both mothers and babies - but to also let Mum’s out there know that it isn’t always easy, and that’s ok. Due to cultural norms, we don’t grow up seeing w...omen in our community breastfeed their babies freely and we also don’t see extended breastfeeding as often as you do in other cultures. This is because women in our society are expected (and choose to also) go back to work, keep the household running and often do it all. Gone are the days when we would all share babies and embrace the slowness of life in the postnatal period. To all Mum’s who have breastfeed their babies, even if it was only for a short time, congratulations! You have given your baby the best start to life. For all Mum’s who couldn’t but desperately wanted to, I’m sorry that you didn’t get the support that you required and I grieve with you. For all Mum’s who are struggling now, here are some wonderful resources for you. Also, be sure to check the www.LCANZ.org website for a Lactation Consultant near you if you require any breastfeeding support. @holistic_lactation_consulting @ozbreastfeeding @australianbreastfeedingproject @lcanz2020 #midwife #birth #midwifery #pregnancy #pregnant #birthwithoutfear #naturalbirth #postpartum #midwives #breastfeeding #childbirth #empoweredbirth #motherhood #newborn #midwifelife #baby #gentlebirth #childbirtheducation #birthbecomesher #womenshealth #positivebirth #birthmatters #womenempowerment #pregnantlife #morningtonpeninsula #continuityofcare #continuityofmidwiferycare #worldbreastfeedingweek #breastfeeding

10.01.2022 This beautiful Mumma is feeling pretty sore towards the end of her pregnancy with pre existing back problems and the physical work of being a Mum to a 2.5 year old. For her 31 week appointment she didn’t have to leave the comfort of her couch, and her gorgeous boy was napping upstairs so her husband could be present for the appointment too. This is what I love about visit families in their home - you get to see them for who they are and not who they feel they have to be. #midwife #birth #midwifery #pregnancy #pregnant #birthwithoutfear #naturalbirth #postpartum #midwives #breastfeeding #childbirth #empoweredbirth #motherhood #newborn #midwifelife #baby #gentlebirth #childbirtheducation #birthbecomesher #womenshealth #positivebirth #birthmatters #womenempowerment #pregnantlife #morningtonpeninsula

10.01.2022 Lots of people have been asking me where I got the name, Virago, from. Well, Wikipedia says it best - Virago can also be used in a derogatory way against women, and mean that they are ‘domineering’ or ‘bad-tempered’. But like many words man has used to put down women, I’m reclaiming the word to support powerful women.

09.01.2022 I love this visual on the benefits of having a known midwife for your pregnancy care There are still so many improvements that need to be made for more women to have access to these models. If you’re interested in finding out how you can use your voice to demand more choice for women, head over to @maternity_consumer_network ... @maternity_consumer_network See more

08.01.2022 Merry Christmas from Virago Midwifery! My family and I are enjoying a few family Christmas’s over the next few days, from Wangaratta, Vic to Paradise Point, Qld. I’d like to take a minute to wish all the Mum’s and their babies a Merry Christmas, and acknowledge those babes who we wish were here for Christmas too. It can be a very tough time of the year for some women and families, so please be kind to each other and yourselves ... Also, don’t forget our competition is still running and you are in with a very good chance at winning if you enter now! #midwife #christmas2019 #pregnancy #morningtonpeninsula See more

07.01.2022 credit @melanippe_art I’m sure you are all aware now of the devastating bush fires burning across Australia. We had a small inconvenience due to the fires on return from our Queensland holiday to country North Victoria. Our flight was delayed overnight due to smoke. Our small inconvenience is nothing compared to the terrible losses some families have suffered, but it really got me thinking about the massive effect these fires have had, and will continue to have in mont...hs to come. When we did arrive in Northern Victoria, the sky was orange, ash was flying everywhere and the air was very difficult to breathe. Again, a minor inconvenience to us, and a reminder of how horrible it must be for those on the front line. It’s not much, but Virago Midwifery has donated to the Bendigo Bank Bushfire Fund, as money is more practical than physical donations at the moment. If you can, even if it’s two dollars, I urge you to do the same. I’m especially thinking of the pregnant Mums and babies out there. I was worried about the air quality for my 9 month old and we were only there for 1 day - I can’t imagine the stress it must be causing them. If there’s anything more practical Virago Midwifery can do for Mums and Bubs affected by the bushfires, please DM me x See more

05.01.2022 Welcome to the world, Maya Eve This little girl raced her way into the world before her Mum could even think about getting into the car to go the hospital. She was born at home peacefully and powerfully! Jess was an absolute force during her very quick and intense labour, supported so attentively by her husband Sonny. Congratulations Jess, Sonny and proud big brother Logan. Maya is the most precious little girl and a beautiful addition to your amazing family. It has been an... honour working with you during your pregnancy, and I look forward to watching Maya grow #midwife #birth #midwifery #pregnancy #pregnant #birthwithoutfear #naturalbirth #postpartum #midwives #breastfeeding #childbirth #empoweredbirth #motherhood #newborn #midwifelife #baby #gentlebirth #childbirtheducation #birthbecomesher #womenshealth #positivebirth #birthmatters #womenempowerment #pregnantlife #morningtonpeninsula #continuityofcare #continuityofmidwiferycare

04.01.2022 Today is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. It is important to first state that loss cannot be defined as only a miscarriage of a certain gestation, or a baby that has passed away. Loss happens the moment you become aware of a potential baby. When the two lines appear or you receive a positive blood test. You start planning, imagining, dreaming, hoping and loving. Any loss of is a loss. Today we remember all of these babies, and light a candle in our hearts for all w...omen, families and birth parents that have experienced a loss of their baby. We talk about their babies with them, and raise awareness of something that effects so many people. It takes a village to raise a child, and a village also grieves the loss of a child. Never suffer alone. Stunning artwork by @soni_artist #pregnancyandinfantlossremembranceday #miscarriage #miscarriageawareness

04.01.2022 Today was my last visit with my first Virago Midwifery family Although I’ve made some lifelong friends and I know we’ll see each other again (after lockdown of course), it was bittersweet to leave their house today. It has been a wonderful honour to be involved from early pregnancy, birth planning and for the extended postnatal period for this Mum and Bub. I’ll miss our weekly catch ups, but I feel so lucky to have been a part of their life for this special time Midwifery... continuity of care really is the best thing ever #midwife #birth #midwifery #pregnancy #pregnant #birthwithoutfear #naturalbirth #postpartum #midwives #breastfeeding #childbirth #empoweredbirth #motherhood #newborn #midwifelife #baby #gentlebirth #childbirtheducation #birthbecomesher #womenshealth #positivebirth #birthmatters #womenempowerment #pregnantlife #morningtonpeninsula #continuityofcare #continuityofmidwiferycare

01.01.2022 WHAT DOES A MIDWIFE DO? As I look forward to the new challenges and skills I will encounter working with women through Virago Midwifery, I have been thinking about the potential scope of practice for a midwife in Australia. If you know me you know what a midwife does. I make a point of dispelling the common myth that a midwife just ‘cuddles babies all day’ (although it is a good day if you do get a newborn snuggle). I thought I’d share a few things that is within the s...cope of practice for a midwife to promote my wonderful profession. Read more here: https://www.viragomidwifery.com/the-/what-does-a-midwife-do Have you met a midwife before? What surprised you about their role? Or are you a midwife? What do you love about your profession? Leave a comment to celebrate midwives and women working in partnership <3
