Karen Coats, an ex-accountant, fell in love with Beechworth (& nebbiolo), added a Bach of Wine Science to her qualifications, and decided to follow her dream. @viragonebbiolo is an entirely nebbiolo based project; Karen planted the vines in 2007, with the first vintage being produced in 2010. The fascinating part of this story is that Rick Kinzbrunner from Giaconda makes each vintage (since helping out when they lost their original winemaker in 2010), giving extended skin contact in concrete, a gentle basket press & transfer to a 1600lt Gamba oval cask for three years. Exciting times when this & its little brother the 2015 arrived yesterday (thx Karen). Can’t wait to try (& compare) the 2015 - the difference should quite marked. Colour: black & scarlet hues, transparent edges. Nose: Ripe cherries, rose petals, nougat, mulberries, anise, Tuscan leather shoes (reminds me of a hand made pair I bought in Pienza), nutmeg & hints of blood orange tang to come. Palate: Slightly bigger than medium weight but silky, sweet & sour cherries, ripe plums & brambly blackberries, marzipan, almond meal, star anise & tarry notes, all carried along on a lingering wave of raspberry & blood orange acidity, and chalky, savoury tannins. Verdict: $50 for this complex beauty, a triumph from an at times difficult (hot) vintage is a steal. There have only been FIVE Nebbiolo wines in the history of winecompanion to receive a 97or98 - TWO of those are from #Beechworth !!! Could it be.... Our meticulous work in the vineyard with the Rotary Tiller, that died at the end of the season? Diligent bunch positioning to protect our northern Italian natives from the Aussie sun?... Fruit thinning X 6 vineyard passes to ensure that only the best end up in our harvest? No use of herbicides, and minimal use of fungicides? Obsessive canopy management?
