24.01.2022 Innisfail, Queensland - Beniamino Troiani, 1957 Many newly arrived Italian immigrants went to the sugarcane plantations in north Queensland to cut sugar cane. They endured a life of extreme heat, snakes, long days, toil and racism, but they made a huge contribution to the sugar industry, both as labourers and farm owners. In 1959 a Canecutters Memorial was built by the Italian community in Innisfail which in 2003 was added to the Queensland Heritage Register. There is a Latin motto on the front of the memorial which loosely translates to: "Where one is content, there is one's homeland".

18.01.2022 Who else has one of these? It travelled from Calabria to Sydney in 1966. This one is stamped Flotta Laura, a fleet of ships which brought thousands of Italians to distant countries. Its handles are thick leather straps stamped with numbers. Does anyone know what the numbers symbolise?

17.01.2022 A rare photo of Steelworks and its chimney stacks in the background of this photo taken early/middle 1960's, with Italian immigrant, Vittorio Pontieri in the foreground. For many Italians who came to Australia in the 1950's and 1960's Cringila was where they settled due to its proximity to the Steelworks where thousands of Italian immigrants worked. 16.01.2022 A great day! Some of our history in the Illawarra will now be preserved forever. However, there is still so much more work to do. Italian businesses should get behind this important project as it is thanks to those early Italian immigrants that they have the opportunities they have today.

13.01.2022 For those who have travelled across the seas to settle in the Illawarra, life in Australia was new and challenging. Having moved to the other side of the world,... our new Italian residents had to adjust to a new way life, new environment, new culture and new food :-) Discover more about your region's history at www.wollongongheritageandstories.com See more

12.01.2022 Vale Sign Bruno Ballesi, you will be remembered as an icon of the Italian community. Photo Roma captured the memories of many Italian weddings, christenings and special occasions and was a large part of the Italian community in the Illawarra.

10.01.2022 Olive groves - some trees hundreds of years old. The land was owned by large landowners who employed local women to pick olives to make oil or preserving. Stage 2 - picking olives

09.01.2022 Collecting the history of Southern Italy to bring back to Wollongong where many Italians from the south reside. These were people of the land who lived by the seasons, experienced poverty and sometimes hunger but who had a spirit of community and generosity which is insurmountable and exists still. Scenes were re-enacted with the support of local people who generously shared their time, knowledge and land! Stage 1 - stomping grapes for wine

08.01.2022 This is also part of our history of Italian immigration. This person has crossed out the Italian word (in dialect) and rewritten it in his spoken English. Snake beans have become SNEK BINZI! Language is a living thing which continues to evolve depending on society. Italians in Australia have developed their own Italo-Australian language. Does anyone remember any of the Italo-Australian words developed by their parents or grandparents in Australia?? Let’s preserve the history so we can grow into the future. Let’s see how long a list of words or phrases we can save and preserve into the future.

03.01.2022 Does anyone recognise where this photo was taken? It is a Church which was built with funds sent by the Scalabrinian Order in the US and was the spiritual centre of Italians and the Scalabrinians up until the late seventies.
