25.01.2022 Were you one of the 100+ lucky people who joined us at our annual Family Picnic on Saturday? Families were treated to a very special sneak peek of the new VisAbility brand, as well as a host of exciting activities including a bouncy castle, face painting, tactile art exhibitions, market stalls, blind sports demonstrations and reptile encounters (not for the faint-hearted). At this special yearly event, we celebrate and recognise the many individuals, families, carers and volu...nteers who make up our blindness and vision impairment community. [Images show VisAbility staff and therapist in new uniform, talking with clients and showing off new VisAbility merch. VisAbility merch includes a tactile print of new logo, cupcakes with new logo, banners, business cards and pens with new logo] #VisAbility #NewLook #LowVision #Blindness #EverySupportAtAnyStage
23.01.2022 This year, we’ve been on an exciting journey of discovery. We took time to speak to the people who matter most: our clients, their families and carers, our staff, volunteers and the community. We asked ‘What does VisAbility mean to you?’ And, we listened.... Of all the fantastic input, there was one clear, definite response. It was consistent with everything VisAbility does from the services we deliver, to the people we support, to the staff we employ, and the facilities we deliver services from. VisAbility is for people with low or no vision. That’s why, from today, you’ll notice something different about VisAbility. [Image shows a bright and bold circular graphic made up of concentric V shapes. There are twelve colours ranging from fuchsia and maroon, through to apple green and teal, through to aubergine and purple.] #VisAbility #NewLook #ChangeIsComing #LowVision #Blindness
22.01.2022 It ended with a conga line...with people dancing off into the distance. White was the theme for this year's Community Activity Centre Christmas luncheon at the Duxton Hotel Perth, but it was the man in red, Father Christmas, who kept them entertained. Thank you to clients who came to the event. Everyone had a blast! ... Make 2021, the year when you do something new and join our Leisure Program. Meet new people and enjoy different experiences. 21.01.2022 Christmas is a time to relax and unwind - right? Not for Bridie, a VisAbility client who'll be rehearsing for an upcoming show at Perth's Fringe World Festival. On her 48th Birthday, Bridie scooped a Silver Award in Latin American Dancing and a Bronze Award in Ballroom Dancing at the Super Star Spectacular Dance Competition organised by the Australian Dancing Society Ltd - West Australian Branch... She dances with Melissa who guides her with the movements. Now she's preparing for a Fringe show - ballroom Burlesque on 15 and 16 January produced by Ballroom Fit. Details here: https://bit.ly/3qVUBvJ Bridie has just 3% vision and only started dancing in August when she joined Ballroom Fit every Tuesday night at Perron Place Live life to the full with support from VisAbility. 20.01.2022 We had an absolute blast at the VisAbility Family Picnic and Biennial Awards. What a fun fuelled day. There was so much to enjoy! Snakes, kids’ sensory zone, bouncy castle, market stalls, fairy dust, tactile art, glitter tattoos, Guide Dogs, blind sport demonstrations and lots (and lots) of food and drink not forgetting the VisAbility band. ... Does this sound like music to your ears? They say a picture speaks a thousand words, so here's plenty from the day. We look forward to sharing award winner photos on Monday - stay tuned as there are more super-wide smiles to come. 20.01.2022 He's spent nearly two years involved in local politics and now Jesse Smith, Greens candidate for Cockburn is running in the WA State Election. Jesse started losing his vision when he was seven-years-old and has been receiving services from VisAbility for many years. The team at VisAbility's CoAct Employment services has been placing Jesse into work at Containers for Change WA, a role which aligns well with his values. As someone with vision impairment, I'll be champion...ing the rights of people with disabilities such as improving public transport and the frequency of bus routes. This will get more vehicles off the road as well. But will he cast his vote at VisAbility? For the first time ever the building will become a polling station in the WA state elections. More details here: https://bit.ly/2ZpuLDR [Images show Jesse campaigning in a shopping mall with a volunteer. Jesse's formal Green sho standing in a black shirt with a tree in the background. 20.01.2022 Ho, ho ho, it's the big jolly man in red - Santa Claus! He's a busy man, but he's set time aside to reply to letters in large print for children with low vision. Write the letter, post it in an Australia Post letterbox and receive a reply sent to your home in large print. It's as simple as that. Don't delay!... Our Digital Production Officer Lee-Ann had hers delivered in person. How great was it that Santa was passing by VisAbility in Vic Park? 13.01.2022 Welcome to the VisAbility Award Winners 2020 and our Hall of Fame. Congratulations to all those involved in this year's awards. All of you showed great motivation to achieve the things important to you and to overcome individual challenges. We love hearing your success stories! ... We are so pleased to be able to recognise your accomplishments. You should be super proud of these accolades. Special mention to Tayla Arnold, who lives in Pemberton and wasn't able to make the presentation ceremony. She received an award for art and design. 13.01.2022 Pedal into something new! How about taking up tandem cycling in WA? It's great for people who are vision impaired because you're riding with someone else. There's a free come and try session on the 27 February. The Western Australian Tandem Cycling Advisory Council President Erin McGlew, who's also a VisAbility client, has taken part in a mammoth cycle from Bassendean to Busselton some 300km. That might be a bit far for you - but it sounds 'wheely' good fun. Watch the vide...o below for more. 04.01.2022 Fact: There are more than 700 candidates standing in the state election. How do we know? We've been recording all their names for Vote Assist to make the voting experience as inclusive as possible. Our Accessible Information team has also taken delivery of 25 large magnifiers. They'll be distributed to polling stations to support people who are vision impaired. ... We are super proud that the VisAbility building is to be an accessible polling station.
