Dead skin cells block your pores and trap this oil inside. p. acnes (c.acnes) bacteria feed off this oil and rapidly multiply. Inflammation occurs. Your body senses the increase in bacteria and sends white blood cells (WBC) to 'fight it'. After fighting the bacteria the WBCs die (what we see as pus). WBCs either absorbed and broken down by your body or released by squeezing etc. but inflammation remains. If the skin has been broken (as in the case of picking and squeezing) there may be a scab. Wound healing process begins (more on this and how it can lead to acne scarring in next weeks post). Inflammation may cause the production of melanin in the affected area (PIH/Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation) or be seen in fair skin as PIE (Post Inflammatory Erythema).
