20.01.2022 Tasmanian Government announces 'Interim visa nomination allocations and priorities'. State nomination applications for sc190/491 lodged after 1pm (AEST), Tuesday 25th August 2020 must be accompanied by an employer's letter clearly explaining how the applicant's role is 'critical' to Tasmania’s economic recovery.

19.01.2022 Tasmania to enforce 'toughest border measures in the country' amid coronavirus pandemic. From midnight on Friday 20 March, all 'non-essential' travellers into the state will have to go into 14 days' quarantine (i.e. 14-day self-isolation). 'Essential' travellers include people required to keep the state's health system and trade operational. All others, including returning Tasmanians, will be required to go into quarantine.

18.01.2022 The Migration Institute of Australia (MIA) has received reports that States and Territories have received a very small allocation of state nomination places for Business Migration and subclass 491/190 applications, until the Federal Budget is handed down on 6 October 2020. According to South Australia, Home Affairs has provided strict guidelines on who should be nominated - basically applicants critical to supporting each state's response to the COVID19 pandemic. This includes individuals who provide critical or specialist medical services, those who have critical skills required to maintain the supply of essential goods and services; or delivering services in sectors critical to Australia’s economic recovery.

17.01.2022 Australia announced new visa policy for Hong Kong passport holders: Temporary graduate and skilled workers will be offered an additional five years of work rights in Australia on top of the time they’ve already been in Australia, with a pathway to permanent residency at the end of that period. Students will be eligible for a five year graduate visa from the conclusion of their studies, with a pathway to permanent residency at the end of that period. .... Future Hong Kong applicants for temporary skilled visas will be provided with a five year visa, based on meeting the updated skills lists and Labour Market Testing requirements. Existing arrangement will continue to apply for those applicants who study and work in regional areas to help address skills shortages in those areas, with pathways to permanent residency after 3 years. The Government will bolster efforts to attract Hong Kong’s best and brightest through the Global Talent and Business Innovation and Investment Programs, both part of the permanent migration program. An 'occupation ceiling' may be applied to invitations issued under the independent sc189 and skilled regional (provisional) sc491 visas. These occupation ceilings do not apply to State or Territory Nominated sc190/491, except for Accountants (a ceiling of 1,000) which reflects volumes in other skilled visa categories. Higher ceilings are set for occupations in areas such as buil...ding and construction, engineering, education, medical and trades. 10.01.2022 New announcement today on 4 April 2020 regarding temporary visas. Temporary Skilled visa holders on either a 2-year or 4-year visa who have been stood down, but not laid off, will maintain their visa validity. Businesses will also be able to reduce the hours of the visa holder without the person being in breach of their visa condition. These visa holders will also be able to access up to $10,000 of their superannuation this financial year. Working holiday makers supportin...g critical sectors of heath, aged and disability care, agriculture and food processing, and childcare, some limited flexibility will be provided. Those who work in agriculture or food processing will be exempt from the six month work limitation with the one employer and eligible for a further visa to keep working in these critical sectors if their current visa is due to expire in the next six months. Self-isolation required for 14 days before taking up employment in a different region. Temporary graduate visa holders will be able to access their Australian superannuation if needed. New Zealanders who are on 444 visas and arrived before 26 February 2001 will have access to welfare payments and the JobKeeper payment. Those arrived after 2001 have access to the JobKeeper payment. They do not have access to JobSeeker or other welfare payments. International students are encouraged to rely on family support, part-time work where available and their own savings to sustain themselves in Australia. They are able to work up to 40 hours per fortnight. Those working in aged care and as nurses have had these hours extended to support these critical sectors. 05.01.2022 Tasmanian Government official announcement today regarding state nominations - applications are still open but nominations cannot be made in SkillSelect until quotas are allocated by the Australian Government. Please beware of scaremongering headlines and social media click baits. Always refer to trustworthy organisations for most accurate and up-to-date information. Several states and territories are also stating that 190/491 will be opened, likely by August (according to South Australia) when the quotas are allocated by the Australian Government. The 190/491 program is NOT closed indefinitely or terminated.

03.01.2022 Tasmania Temporary Visa Holder Skilled Employee Assistance Program will provide $2,000 payments to around 500 of the state’s tourism and hospitality skilled visa holders (Subclass 489, 491, 494, 485, 457, 482 as well as BVs associated with these visas and 190), such as chefs and accommodation, hotel and restaurant managers, who are all important to Tasmania’s economy but have lost their jobs or had their hours reduced due to COVID-19 restrictions.
