25.01.2022 I should collect at least a dollar from every client who comes in and says they have gone gluten free because ‘Influencers’ have said it’s the healthy way to go. It would definitely help to build up my Italian vacation fund So, there are people who experience a sensitivity to the protein gluten, which is found in wheat, rye, barley and possibly oats products. And then there are those who have Coeliac disease. This disease affects approximately 1 in 100 Australians and can... be familial. In coeliac disease the individual’s immune system reacts abnormally to gluten which results in the lining of the small intestine becoming damaged when it is exposed to even small amounts of gluten (literally in a crumb of bread!) What are the symptoms? This can vary greatly, ranging from none to many symptoms. With children it can cause poor weight gain, delayed growth and development, irritability and a poor appetite in addition to bowel problems and anaemia. In adults, common complaints include diarrhoea, loss of weight, nausea, flatulence and abdominal discomfort. Due to the damage in the intestinal lining, it places the individual at a higher risk of nutrient deficiencies like calcium and iron. How is it diagnosed? It has to be managed by your GP as you can have a false negative if you have been avoiding gluten. The diagnosis can only be properly made by a pathology examination of a biopsy taken from the intestine. See pic below that’s what they will be looking for. What is the treatment for Coeliac disease? Simply by following a gluten free diet, i.e. removing all foods containing gluten from the diet. This will allow for the restoration of health and elimination of the GI symptoms. And yes, once you have been diagnosed with CD, the diet needs to be continued for the rest of your life as the sensitivity to gluten does not go away. Bottom line get a proper diagnosis as you may be limiting healthy foods from your diet for no reason. #visiondietetics #visionhealth #toowoombadietitian #coeliacdisease #foodallergies #glutenintolerance #gettested

23.01.2022 This October, our Senior Exercise Physiologist, Megan, is taking part in the Great Cycle Challenge to fight kids' cancer! Right now, cancer is the largest singl...e killer of children from disease in Australia over 600 children are diagnosed with cancer every year and sadly, 3 die every week. Kids should be living life, not fighting for it. And so Meg is riding and raising funds to support the Children's Medical Research Institute to continue their work into the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and finding a cure for childhood cancer. Please support Meg's challenge by making a donation through her fundraising page to give these kids the brighter futures they deserve. Together, we can save little lives. Thanks for your support. 20.01.2022 A nice infographic showing not only the amount of iron in different animal and plant foods, but importantly, the amount that is ABSORBED from each source on the... right which is more relevant. It is why in the Nutrient Reference Values for Australia and New Zealand, requirements for iron are set at 80% higher for people who follow a vegetarian diet. See more

18.01.2022 Let’s talk a little about Milk. This is another food that has come under fire in recent times by some Influencers as one to be avoided. Milk is a good source of protein and calcium, is low GI and relatively cheap and easy to include into your diet. When do we need to avoid milk? If you are one of the people who has been diagnosed with Lactose intolerance, then it would be beneficial for you to avoid lactose. What is lactose intolerance and how is it diagnosed? It is the in...ability to digest lactose, which is a type of sugar found in milk and other dairy products. It is diagnosed by either doing a biopsy of the lining of your bowel (more invasive) or via breath test or blood glucose test. What causes it? It happens when the small intestine does not make enough of the enzyme lactase, which helps the body absorb lactose. This can cause gut issues such as cramps, bloating and diarrhea. What should I do if I am lactose intolerant? You do not need to remove every single bit of lactose, as it is often dose-related. A reduced lactose diet will assist in managing your symptoms. Lactose is present in large amounts in milk, yoghurt, ice-cream, soft cheeses. You can have lactose free milks or yoghurts and hard, ripened cheeses. Additionally, taking Lacteeze tablets and drops (which contain the enzyme lactase) can allow you to add flexibility to your diet when eating out or allowing you to still enjoy your dairy treat. #visiondietetics #visionhealth #toowoombadietitian #milk #goodfoodonabudget #budgetfood #justeatrealfood #foodintolerance

14.01.2022 R U OK? That's not the end of the conversation. What's next? If you are concerned about someone, trust your instincts and ask. Do not worry about having to fix their issue. Your conversation may be the catalyst to allow them to seek help. Are you concerned about your own mental health? You are not alone. There is no need to be ashamed to say "I'm not coping. I need help".... Here's hoping these suggestions can help nudge in the right direction. It's ok to say I'm not Ok... Then do something about it. #visiondietetics #visionhealth #ruok #ruokday #whatsinyourfocus #whatwillyoudofornyou #mentalhealthawareness #youcantpourfromanemptycup

14.01.2022 More credible information.

13.01.2022 The true measure of a man is how they respond to stress and pressure. We can all agree 2020 has not been easy for many (any?) of us. That does not give you licence to take your frustrations out on others. Not family. Not friends. Not staff. Not co-workers. Treat other people how you would like to be treated ... Make courtesy common again. It not only allows for a better environment for everyone, but helps your own mental health and well-being as well. Happy new week. 05.01.2022 Why I'd never recommend cutting out grains! The Paleo brigade might sound convincing... but please don't cut out wholegrains thinking they're 'bad' for you ... Here's the science. Fibre from wholegrains is not only good for your gut health, but studies show it can also... Reduce your chances of developing several diseases including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and colon cancer, to name just a few. Lower the risk of breast cancer, while fibre from fruit and veg didn't seem to have this same benefit i.e. different fibres benefit us in different ways. A study with over 400k people found those who ate the most wholegrains reduced their risk of heart disease by more than 20%, vs those who ate the lowest amount. I generally recommend aiming for 3 portions of wholegrains a day (alongside fruit, veg, nuts, seeds and legumes) to get your fibre needs . If you've been diagnosed with coeliac disease or are following a low FODMAP diet, that doesn't mean you need to cut out wholegrains either - quinoa, buckwheat, teff and wild rice are great options (if coeliac double check they're certified gluten-free). We're working on that for Bio&Me! @bioandmeuk Raspberry Gut-Loving Granola with 8.3g of fibre goodness per serving. Thank you SO much to everyone who voted in the @nourishawards - so chuffed that we won in the Gut-Friendly and Low Sugar awards categories! . . #LoveYourGut

04.01.2022 First day of Spring!! Grateful for my client who brought me flowers from her garden. Spring signifies new beginnings, rising from hibernation and rebirth. In the midst of the pandemic that has 'removed control' over much of what we can do, what do you choose to focus on? My client feels like she is beginning to bloom by changing some of the long standing unhealthy habits she had been practicing. ... Through shifting focus on what is truely important to her and what she does have control of, she is seeing the light and loving who she is becoming. Grateful she's sharing her journey with me. So I'm sharing my flowers with you. (What goes around, comes around ) #visiondietetics #visionhealth #newdaynewbeginning #springtime #toowoombadietitian #timetobloom

04.01.2022 Happy New Week! You may already know this, but there is no magic pill. If there was, we would live in Utopia. And we would have the person who discovered the pill on Instagram and Facebook influencing their 100 million followers For the rest of us, we need to determine our 'WHY'. What does good health and lifestyle look like for me? Then we do the HOW. We have to do the work and HABITS are key. They either help by getting us where we want to go. Or they harm. We can't kee...p doing the same things and expect different results. #whatwillyoudofornyou Have a great week and may it be productive in the way you need it to be. #visiondietetics #visionhealth #toowoombadietitian #balance #dailyhabits #habits #thoughtsbecomereality #whatsimportant #whatsinyourfocus #findyourwhy
