12.01.2022 Amblyopia or Lazy Eye is the result of poor vision early in life. Lazy eye is most successfully treated before 8 years of age. Therefore, it’s important to start treatment as soon as possible. Treatment consists of wearing glasses, when necessary, and covering the better eye with a patch. This makes the eye with poor vision work harder, strengthen, and improve, i.e. less lazy.... The patch can be an adhesive patch that is applied to the skin or a material patch that is fitted over one side of your child’s glasses. The patch is usually worn for 2-8 hours per day, depending on the severity of the lazy eye. In some case of lazy eye, a medicated drop can be placed in the good eye to enlarge the pupil and make the vision blurry. Once again, this will encourage the eye with poor vision to work harder. For reusable patches, we would recommend Kay Fun Patches, which are made of fabric. The patches fit comfortably and snugly under most sizes and styles of spectacles to provide effective occlusion. The patches come in a wonderful range of colourful designs to suit any child, and most patterns are universal for the right or left eye. They are hypoallergenic, washable, environmentally friendly and very cost-effective. These patches are available at Vision Precinct.

04.01.2022 DO YOU SUFFER HEADACHES? IT MAY BE CAUSED FROM ASTIGMATISM! #headache #astigmatism #blurryvision... There are so many causes of headaches. Most headaches aren't the result of a serious illness, but some may result from a life-threatening condition requiring emergency care. The most common cause of headaches we’ve seen in our optometry clinics is "astigmatism". When you have astigmatism, the shape of your cornea (front of your eye) takes on a oval "cylinder" shape, and your eye isn’t able to focus light equally on your macula. This irregularity results in constant distorted vision that forces you to strain your eyes to focus things more clearly. If you’re suffering from headaches and you’re also noticing a decline in your vision, the two may be related and stem from astigmatism. Astigmatism is one of three most common vision problems, apart from short-sightedness and long-sightedness. Causes of astigmatism include: A hereditary defect Eye rubbing Eye injury, disease, or surgery Symptoms of astigmatism include: Distorted or blurred images (both near and far) Squinting Eye discomfort or irritation Poor night vision Eye fatigue Headaches The reason why you may develop headaches is that your eyes are straining to focus. This effort can lead to eye muscle fatigue followed by headaches, usually at the frontal lobe or forehead. The best way to find out whether your headaches are related to astigmatism is to perform an extensive eye exam which normally takes about 30-45 minutes. If you are suffering headaches and have astigmatism, we would recommend prescription spectacle or contact lenses. In some cases we may recommend refractive surgery. To get rid of your headaches and see more clearly, book for a comprehensive eye exam at www.visionprecinct.com.au.

03.01.2022 Dry eye is the most common eye problem! Dry eyes feel uncomfortable. Your eyes may sting or burn, especially after looking at a computer screen for a few hours. You may have it without knowing.... It occurs when your tears are not good enough to provide adequate lubrication for your eyes. Either you don’t produce enough tears or if you produce poor-quality tears. This leads to friction then damage to the front surface of the eye. Treatments for dry eyes varies depending on the severity. But the aim is to make your eyes feel more comfortable. Treatments can include lifestyle changes, eyedrops or minor medical procedures like punctal plugs. Dry eye can cause the following difficulty: reading for long period night-time driving concentrating on a task seeing people faces from afar. At your eye examination, the optometrist can test and confirm if you have: 1. Decreased tear production 2. Increased tear evaporation Treatment will depend on one or a combination of these two diagnoses. See your optometrist if you've had prolonged signs and symptoms of dry eyes, including red, irritated, tired or painful eyes. TIPS for more comfortable eyes: Stop air blowing directly in your eyes. e.g. hair dryers, car vent, air conditioners or fans. Wear sunglasses or prescription eyewear to block out wind and dry air. Take 2 minutes eye breaks every 20 minutes during long visual tasks. Blink often will help you produce more tears. Our rate of blinking is less when we stare at something for long periods. Avoid cold rooms and cold environment. Stop smoking and avoid smoke as it can worsen dry eyes symptoms. Book an eye test with one of our Optometrists at Vision Precinct today.
