21.01.2022 Did you know that our iconic stainless steel flag mast acts as a huge lightning rod? It protects an area of approximately 350 square metres over the centre of the building. Copper bars are connected to the base of each flag mast leg, and runs down the sides of the curved granite walls to connect with the building’s earth. When lightning strikes the mast, it is conducted harmlessly down to the ground.

19.01.2022 This sitting period saw history created with a virtual Parliament. Something not so new is the Unconformity underneath Parliament House which goes back millions of years. It’s a fascinating rock formation made up of two sections that look different, head in different directions and sit at different angles. It’s a break in the geological record that really stands out. So why does it matter?... The rock comes from the Silurian geological era, which is when life began to emerge from the oceans onto land. At the time the Canberra district was under water and out to sea. Dr Steven Hill from Geoscience Australia explains that the sediment originally deposited beneath the sea may have been uplifted above the sea level, and what we’re looking at in the basement of Parliament House is a land surface from more than 400 million years ago. Check out our video on the unconformity if you haven’t seen it here http://ow.ly/YW7c50Bgzaf

16.01.2022 In January 1901, the London Morning Post newspaper published ‘The Australian Union’, the first piece from its new ‘Special Correspondent’. Datelined ‘Sydney, No...v. 29’, the article offered the Post's readers an intimate, engaging and remarkably well informed commentary on Australia on the eve of Federation. The anonymous correspondent was Alfred Deakin who had, only two days before the article’s publication, been appointed the first Attorney-General of the Commonwealth of Australia. A leading federalist, Deakin dominated national politics until 1910, serving as Prime Minister three times before finally leaving politics in May 1913. Throughout this period, he continued to write as the Morning Post's correspondent on Australian affairs. Deakin’s letters to the Morning Post paint a broad canvas of Australian life and experience in the early years of Federation, ranging widely from drought, railways and tariffs to defence, imperial politics, and white Australia. At heart, however, they provide a compelling, contemporaneous account of the Australian political scene, of which he himself was at the very centre. Once complete, this multi-volume series will present the full collection of letters published in the Morning Post between 1901 and 1914. Volume 2 is now available from the Parliament Shop or for download here: http://bit.ly/2MLM237

06.01.2022 In 1901 a mysterious ‘special correspondent’ started writing weekly columns for the London Morning Post. For 14 years no-one knew it was 3-times Prime Minister and Australia’s first Attorney-General Alfred Deakin. The columns provided a fascinating, front-row view of the nation’s development from Federation through to the eve of WWI. The Australian Parliamentary Library has today launched the second volume of letters as part of its ongoing series. The Parliament Shop has both Volume 1 and 2 for sale.
