18.01.2022 Fun Fact Part of the Blackheath & Thornburgh school grounds was previously a dam. The Bonnie Dundee Dam was built alongside Mosman Creek for the purpose of providing water for EHT Plants Bonnie Dundee Mill. The dam was also a great spot for boating & swimming, with the Charters Towers Swimming Club holding their first carnival there on 21 December 1899.... 15.01.2022 Visitor question answered Q. Are those curved windows and the whole front at Country Barber shop original? A. Yes, there are! Built for David Lyall in 1897, the curved plate glass windows are one of the many features of the shop formally known Lyall’s Jewellery Store. There are also ventilation grilles beneath the windows to allow for the needs of warmer climate & panels of small, coloured glass panes above the windows. There is a gas light fixture above the doorway and original cedar paneled doors.

14.01.2022 Imagine being able to step back in time to see Charters Towers in its prime? The many murals around our city give you a chance to do just that. You can find them at the Arthur Titley Centre, Civic Club, Centenary Park, next to Target Country and the Westpac Bank.

13.01.2022 While you are exploring Ravenswood, be sure to stop & see the Chapel Street bridge. Constructed around 1895-1898, this stunning bridge is the only known example in Queensland of an early brick-arch road bridge that is completely intact. Recently added to the Queensland Heritage Register, this rare bridge shows a glimpse into the history of the goldfield.

12.01.2022 This impressive building, on the corner of Gill and High Streets, was built for Herbert Foxlee, a Family Grocer and Wine Merchant. He continued his business here well into the 1940s and leased sections of his building to others such as Bootmaker Richard Terrell. Photo courtesy of the Charters Towers Archives.

12.01.2022 When two become one In the 1890s, the right side of the Arthur Titley Centre was known as the Criterion Drapery House, by the 1930s it was a garage & then a Postal Institute & Electoral Commission in the 1940s. The left side was also a drapery store in 1887, owned by Joe Whitehead & his brother. By 1933, it became the Horticultural Hall. In 1986, the two buildings were merged & named in honour of long standing mayor Arthur Tiger Titley (1909-1983) and today is used for meetings & social functions.

11.01.2022 Due to the need to be living close to where one worked, miners were scattered on the goldfield between the two townships of Millchester & Charters Towers. These miners camps, such as St Patrick & Just in Time, were set up around reefs & mills and whilst smaller than the townships, and they did have some facilities to serve them. However, a majority of miners lived & businesses operated from the two surveyed townships of Millchester & Charters Towers, with Charters Towers going on to dominate. 09.01.2022 The Sunburst Hotel, built in 1885 by local builder at the time Ben Toll, was lost in a spectacular fire in the late 1950s. What makes this hotel fire a little unusual compared to others is that it was a daytime fire. Ironically, the site of the Sunburst Hotel is now the Charters Towers Fire Station on the Corner of Gill & Boundary Streets. Photos courtesy of the Charters Towers Archives.

09.01.2022 Part 1 - In the beginning It was towards the end of 1871, after a storm spooked their horses, that Jupiter Mosman, an aboriginal horseboy for prospecting party Hugh Mosman, George Clarke & John Fraser, first found gold near where Mosman Street, Rainbow Road and Black Jack Road are today. It sparked a gold rush in early 1872, which created our amazing Charters Towers City. Jupiter Mosman (left) standing where he found gold. Photo courtesy of Charters Towers Archives Group

07.01.2022 Mosman Street, Charters Towers on a Saturday night was THE place to be back in the day. It was Miners Night. Everyone benefited, the stores & hotels along Mosman Street would bring in massive takings. Miners ending their hard-working week would head to Mosman Street to have a casual pint or two, tell a yarn & dabble on the Stock Exchange. And the ladies of the goldfield got the chance to come out in their finery, mingle with friends & do a spot of shopping. Photo courtesy of Charters Towers Archives

07.01.2022 Part 3 In the Beginning Following a Protection Area being granted in early 1872, Hugh Mosman & the prospecting party returned to the goldfield to start the first mine in Charters Towers, the North Australian Gold Mine. It was located at the top end of Mosman Street, near where they first found gold at the base of Towers Hill.... Photo courtesy of Charters Towers Archives

07.01.2022 Part 2 - In the beginning After Jupiter Mosman first found gold at the end of 1871, Hugh Mosman made an application with the Gold Commissioner at the time W.S.E.M Charters at Ravenswood for a Protection Area in 1872. Our citys two-part name was created as follows;... Towers: because of the cone shaped hills around the goldfield at the time. Charters: honouring Gold Commissioner W.S.E.M Charters. See more

06.01.2022 Part 4 In the Beginning In the months following the first gold find, the rush that followed, developed Charters Towers at a furious rate. Some highlights from the first year, 1872 Trevethans butchers shop & 3 small stores opened to serve the prospectors. Owens Store, was the first permanent building on the goldfield, erected on Mosman Street in the vacant lot next to The Royal Hotel.... James Smith Reid established The Northern Miner Newspaper and the Venus Mill opened & commenced crushing in July 1872. And the rest, as they say, is history Photo courtesy of Charters Towers Archives See more

01.01.2022 Situated at the rear of Gill Street, the Manchester Unity Hall was officially opened on 22 September 1880 with a banquet and a ball. Designed by John Longden the hall was the first brick building to be built on the Goldfield and still stands there today. Whilst this building is not accessible by the public, you might be able to catch a glimpse of the building from Ryan Street.
