25.01.2022 #covid19 So much of our news and conversations have been dominated by this virus over the last month or more.. We are all dealing differently with our current situation, the images on our screens and the thoughts of what lies ahead. Please remember to be kind.

24.01.2022 Sometimes you have to be at the right spot at the right time.. Like Lisa Engeman at Morwong Beach on Coochiemudlo.

23.01.2022 Almost unreal after the marine winds we had today - Coochiemudlo resident Leigh Purdie snapped this eerily beautiful photo of the ferry on the bay..

23.01.2022 Back at Coochiemudlo in the last light ..

23.01.2022 Beat the heat and come on over tomorrow ! Browse a bargain at local artisans' stalls or find a unique Christmas gift for someone special - right next to Main Branch. Share it on and see you there

23.01.2022 The sun is back on Coochiemudlo today, and the birds welcome us back outdoors after braving the cold rain.. A curious rainbow lorikeet and a spangled drongo, easily recognised at his characteristically forked tail.

23.01.2022 Coochie was pretty dreamy today.. Apologies for not posting very often lately ..we'll try to do better.. But sometimes it's good to deconnect and reconnect after some time out. ... On Morwong Beach, for example ? See more

22.01.2022 Quite a struggle for this pied cormorant for a few minutes with a big fish it got right next to the jetty at Coochiemudlo. Here is the moment, it finally gets its meal down.. Never give up!

22.01.2022 Moreton Bay Coral Reefs : It is probably less known that Moreton Bay is home to a variety of corals, including some that have adapted to sediment-rich shallow waters around the southern islands. These may be less colourful than offshore corals, especially seen in daylight at a very low tide near Coochiemudlo, and more scattered...But look closely and enjoy the wonder and beauty of the symbiotic relationship between coral polyps and single-celled algae (called zooxanthellae). All corals reefs are highly sensitive to changes in their environment and collection is prohibited, so if you come across any while exploring the waters of the bay, please enjoy, do not destroy. @ Coochiemudlo Island

22.01.2022 Although it's clearly not flowing quite as natural as it once may have done - as we have seen with impressive flooding during the rains on the foreshore last week - Curlew Creek that runs along Victoria Parade on the bottom of the island must have been a mighty little stream at this point where it arrives on Main Beach. We also saw very high tides last week which would have flushed the mouth of the creek further. Today we could see where the red water (from tree tannins but also here, the iron of the red rock supposedly) flowing gently down met the incoming tide.

21.01.2022 Good news : A week after the big rains, the water quality of the bay had improved and all tested sites on Redlands Coast is now back to safe levels for swimming and recreational activities on the water. Link to Redland City Council info in comments.

21.01.2022 Crisp mornings, sunshine and beautiful views on your walks or boat trips - Coochie is perfect for a relaxing getaway And watch out for dolphins, they are around now !

21.01.2022 Fishing with the pooch on Coochie..

21.01.2022 Don't forget, on Coochiemudlo FLINDERS DAY is on this coming weekend on Sunday July 19th with beachside MARKETS stalls with artisans and food and music. Coochie's cafes and BBQ areas will also be open of course. For a refresher why Coochiemudlo residents are celebrating Flinders Day, read our blog post from 2018 here : https://www.visitcoochiemudlo.com//five-things-to-know-abo ... ... or visit the website of the COOCHIEMUDLO HERITAGE SOCIETY here : https://www.coochiemudloheritage.org.au/ See more

21.01.2022 Of course there are reasons, you have to leave your home. You might have to go shopping or in Queensland, those who could not go to pre-poll, vote postal or by phone, would go to vote today. Just remember to keep your distance of others, go alone, try not to touch things others touch - and #washyourhands ! This is a decisive phase, we can only win if we take it serious now. #stayhomesavelives ... #redlandscoast #queensland See more

20.01.2022 About water quality after strong rain events and flooding: After the rains, the flow-off from the Melaleuca Wetlands has cut through Norfolk beach with a coffee-coloured steam. This colour is caused by the natural tannins of the leaves of the tea trees, just like the Brown Lake on Stradbroke Minjerribah, a popular and safe bathing lake. However - invisible to the eye - the bacterial load on our bay is currently considered not safe for swimming so please watch out for signage and official announcements.

20.01.2022 Clean Up Australia Day 2020 - Litter on Beaches, ocean and waterways have become a big subject over the last years. Many people always do the right thing, others pick up what is left behind or washed ashore.. Clean Up Australia Day is a great campaign for a collective effort but we would like to thank everyone who keeps Coochiemudlo cleaner as they walk and play on the island's shores.

20.01.2022 Western winds a bit fresh today, but the clouds looked amazing over the bay..

20.01.2022 amazing photos of the bay..

19.01.2022 Easter is coming and it's not like anyone would have planned for. Some restrictions may seem intrusive and overreaching but remember - if we can say later it did not hit us that badly, it may just be because of the hard rules in place now. Do the right thing, Australia! #stayhomesavelives

19.01.2022 Sometimes, on the ferry to and from Coochiemudlo, we see these birds fly in smaller flocks from one wading point to another. That's short trips for them, considering their astonishing migration journeys..

19.01.2022 This page was created to share the beauty of our island with those that love Coochie already or are yet to discover it. We love our visitors! But this is serious, and we need to protect the high number of our elderly and vulnerable residents. So for a while, we are asking you to please #stayathome ...

19.01.2022 Great to see healthy green seagrass at the Northern end of the island with the low tide. Even better - observing our beloved soldier crabs scampering around on it, possibly a little bit less at ease than those on the sand .. But always so photogenic !

18.01.2022 Unusual daytime activity this morning in the seasonal colony of the nomadic little red flying foxes today.. Fruit bats are important pollinators for Australia's eucalypt trees, last summer's heat and fires have sadly decimated their populations in many regions. Not popular in some suburbs, it's good to see them have a sanctuary on Coochiemudlo.. while they are cute & important, never handle bats you may find exhausted, injured or dead. Get in touch bat wildlife carers, also tell your kids.

18.01.2022 So many juvenile fish visible from the Coochiemudlo jetty today.. As you stay in your neighbourhoods this Easter break.. keep your eyes open on your walks for wildlife encounters! Maybe post a photo in a comment? Let's keep in touch #stayhomesavelives #stayconnected

17.01.2022 Striped marsh frogs were popping today along Curlew Creek after the latest rains..

17.01.2022 We were a bit quiet lately, not to encourage visitation too early, but restrictions ease further and cafés, playgrounds and public BBQs are set to start to open this weekend, including on Coochiemudlo. We encourage everyone to be a safe traveller, respect other people's space, and make sure you understand some limitations that are still in place for our water transport and island businesses. Welcome back !

17.01.2022 Walking Norfolk beach this week : Speckled sand crab, snatched from the shallow waters at incoming tide, for a quick photo. And a what we thought was a nudibranch, bright red with red spots, looking a bit worse for wear after being washed up on the beach. Hopefully, it recovers..!.

17.01.2022 Happy Father's Day to all dads, stepdads, granddads, and mums who are both mum and dad... we wish ALL families a lovely day! #foundonthebeach this morning

17.01.2022 Dreamy capture taken by John Murphy today at the boat ramp on Coochiemudlo..

17.01.2022 Yalingbila ! It is rare - but it happens: Whales that travel up and down the coast come and take a little loop into the bay for some rest & play.. After missing a sighting last week, today we could see one breach along Minjerribah / North Stradbroke Island. Just splashes visible from Norfolk Beach on Coochiemudlo and the photos may not be the best, but what a special moment! Thanks to Margaret from Macleay to tell us about the whale !

16.01.2022 Posted with permission, on world bee day have a look at this amazing collection of native bees found on Coochiemudlo with a message by the island's very own beekeeper Bruce whose wife took those beautiful photos : "Today is WORLD BEE DAY - designated by the UN to raise an awareness of the importance of bees and the threats that they are faced with. Coochie hosts a variety of bee species that usually go un-noticed. I have uploaded a few pics to be able to have a closer look at some of the bees that frequently visit our backyard garden - all photo credits go to my patient wife.... Avoid using insecticides/pesticides and herbicides by using safe enviro-friendly alternatives and create a pollinator-friendly garden.".

16.01.2022 You wouldn't believe we have currently Northern winds at around 30 knots roughening up the bay - and the island - when you look at these stunning aerial shots Beau Roberts kindly sent us - wow!

16.01.2022 Who's looking forward to warmer evenings spent on the beach?

14.01.2022 This little caterpillar needs to start walking now to get to the COOCHIE BEACH MARKETS on the foreshore, but you just have to step off the passenger ferry and it's right next to the playground... Tomorrow, 20th September, from 8am. Identified as a Sparshall's moth caterpillar, in a variant with black hair pencils with cute white tips.

13.01.2022 Did you know rainbow lorikeets can breed any time if the year in Queensland? Discovered these youngsters peeking out of a tree hollow after the parents left. It became clear that they were not simply a sharing shelter, because they started to fly onto nearby branches - and weren't really very good at it yet! (Stepped away not to disturb them, parents soon came back too)

13.01.2022 Like all over Australia, residents of Coochiemudlo found ways in the pandemic to pay their respects at dawn with the Last Post heard in all corners of the island and people standing in their driveways..

13.01.2022 Walk along empty Main Beach on Coochiemudlo..

13.01.2022 EDIT- unfortunately, this event has been CANCELLED due to the very wet & windy weather forecast. A new market idea for the hot festive season - Twilight Markets start at 4.30 pm and will go to about 8pm this Saturday on Coochiemudlo Island.

12.01.2022 Love is on the air these days on Coochiemudlo and the bay.. Every year, caper white butterflies fly from the West towards the coast, and sometimes, it is a magical huge swarming event where millions of butterflies mate, feed and lay eggs. A beautiful sight over the weekend to cheer us up between those impressive storms.. Did you see them where you are ?

11.01.2022 A little message to all who normally bring their kids to the beaches, come to the coast and on our islands for a holiday or a day trip.. #covid19australia #stayhomesavelives

11.01.2022 Quiet on Coochiemudlo after a day of rough winds ..

11.01.2022 #covid19 Outdoor activity is so important for body and mind, but it can be confusing with all the new rules to know what you can still do.. Here's a reminder from Coochiemudlo's soldier crabs for current Qld regulations. So keep up or take up regular walks or bike rides in your neighbourhood! . .

10.01.2022 No torch needed today, even in the darker areas of the island. Did you know that the dark patches on the moon were misinterpreted by ancient astronomers as oceans or seas ? That's why they are called lunar maria (singular mare, Latin for 'sea'). In reality, they are basaltic plains formed by volcanic eruptions that are iron-rich and therefore less reflective.... Full moon photos taken today on Coochiemudlo Island.

10.01.2022 Do you have a few minutes for an anonymous survey ? Visitors and Residents of Coochiemudlo are invited to share some insights about why this place is special to them to contribute to shape the future of the island.. go to the short survey here : https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/coochie... This is a joint initiative of a group of businesses on the island to find out a little bit more about the people who share their love for Coochie. No personal data is collected and the answers will only be used in the context of this local community and market research.

10.01.2022 Sighting at Victoria Point jetty today: A beautiful Australasian Darter diving to fish! Video at half speed for better visibility. Bonus bird: a cheeky Welcome Swallow..

09.01.2022 The moon was shy tonight, hiding behind some wispy clouds.. Still so bright!

09.01.2022 Pied oystercatcher couple, a regular sight on Coochiemudlo's quieter beaches, at Morwong yesterday.

09.01.2022 Lovely to see so many families in the beaches of Coochiemudlo during the school holidays... Keep your eyes out for birds nesting and fledging now, give them space and keep them safe. Bush stone-curlew family on Coochiemudlo today.

08.01.2022 After week of stunning Qld winter weather, today has westerlies adding a bit of a chill to the mix.. if you are over on Coochie, don't forget to walk up to the Opshop in Elisabet Street or find the garage sales in 31 Perulpa St and 39 Capembah to get into a bit if wind shade and browse for a bargain..

08.01.2022 A rare - but beautiful - little visitor to gardens, this sacred kingfisher looks like he hasn't had his morning coffee yet ..

07.01.2022 Pelican was busy this morning near the Victoria Point jetty.. Rug up if you go out fishing today, winds are a bit chilly!

07.01.2022 Beautiful skies at the end of a beautiful day... Lovely to see visitors and residents at then Markets and Flinders Day celebrations. The sun certainly played along well!

07.01.2022 It's windy around Coochie.. unless it isn't. Beautiful photos if the bay !

07.01.2022 Please stay close to (your) shore wherever you are, the idea is not to get in trouble, so that volunteer rescuers and emergency services do not have to take any risks. #stayhome

06.01.2022 Come over for the sunny day on the beach.. stay for the amazing skies at sunset. #redlandscoast #coochiemudlo

06.01.2022 #covid19 Some people struggle to understand the restrictions on the use of public benches, tables, bbqs and playgrounds. Yes, this certainly is a sad view The reason for these rules are the risk of smear infection from surface contamination. Don't risk a fine! On this long weekend, for your family Easter walk, please keep moving, lean against a tree or sit on the ground if you need some rest - but mostly, please #stayhome

06.01.2022 These are confusing times, also scary. Many of us are worried for their family, in Australia or abroad, worried for their health and worried for their livelyhoods. We are all in this together. Please follow closely all news and recommendations relevant to your region, wherever you are. Prioritise official channels, like the national broadcaster ABC, the state Health Dept, your own council. Don't add to the confusion by sharing unconfirmed Facebook posts. ... Chose support and solidarity over division and criticism. Slow down, be cautious, caring & kind. See more

05.01.2022 No matter what direction you're going, taking the Coochie ferry is always a great start to a beautiful day like today.. Love our #RedlandsCoast

04.01.2022 Sad to see beaches close on the Gold Coast now, too.. Let's be reasonable on all local beaches and in local parks to keep them open !

04.01.2022 Another great collection of Coochiemudlo views by Gary click through all of them for the most gorgeous baby birds..

03.01.2022 On Coochiemudlo, neighbours are generally quite well connected, and volunteer organisations already exist. But this may not be the same in your street. Many people live alone, young or old. A lot of us are quite confused and overwhelmed by what is going on. Now is the time to holler over the fence and check on that neighbour who lives alone. Maybe they are already set up with a network of helpers, maybe they are in voluntary self-isolation and could need some support. Even if they are fiercely independent or look quite fit. Just talk to them and let them know that you care. Even if you cannot help them yourself, you might be able to help them get onto someone who can. Just do it.

03.01.2022 The sun is out again after the series of wild storms in SE Queensland... Coochie held up well so far, the birds are drying their feathers..until the next downpour.

03.01.2022 Rainy days and high tides on Coochiemudlo Island...

03.01.2022 A beautiful series of Coochiemudlo photos by resident Lisa Engemann ..

03.01.2022 Common gum tree shield bug, also known as eucalyptus shield bug on a scribbly gum on Coochiemudlo. An elegant insect, and usually discretely hiding under bark, they are still a member of the "stink bug" clan, so best just look, don't touch...

02.01.2022 Full moon is actually tomorrow but 99% was looking good over Coochiemudlo tonight already..

02.01.2022 Quiet evening in pastel on Coochiemudlo.

01.01.2022 FIRST COOCHIEMUDLO MANGROVE FESTIVAL 31st July 2021 They are so much more than trees that survive a dip in seawater..! So the Coochiemudlo Heritage Society is putting the spotlight on the healthy fringe of mangroves that frame the western side of the island. Walks, talks and boat rides will be in the program, all details and links shortly on our webpage ( or go directly to organiser's page in comments below)

01.01.2022 The temperatures are up again, and this Eastern bearded dragon came out of hiding to say hello .. (Or to chase us off more likely as we disturbed his sun bath) Great to see a breeding age adult around on Coochiemudlo! Always give wildlife space when you come upon them, and don't let your pets roam into bushland they need to retreat to.
