24.01.2022 We had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Joyce Leslie at the Cowra Visitor Information Centre last week. Joyce, now 96 years old, had worked on the Vickers machine gun at the Lithgow Small Arms Factory during World War II. We'd like to thank Joyce for sharing her memories from wartime and the night of the tragic Cowra Breakout with us. The Vickers machine gun was the weapon manned by Privates Benjamin Hardy and Ralph Jones stationed at the Cowra POW Camp, as they were overwh...elmed and killed by escaping Japanese prisoners of war during the breakout. The men were posthumously awarded the George Cross for their heroism during the only land battle fought on Australian soil during World War II. . . . #Cowra #VisitCowra #UnearthCentralNSW
