06.01.2022 Man to appear in court for fisheries and firearms offences - Watson Taylor Lake - Mid North Coast Police District The Mid North Coast Rural Crime Prevention Tea...m are reminding all fishers that interference with a Commercial Fishers crab traps or fish traps will not be tolerated. Under Fisheries Management Regulations it is an offence to interfere with fishing gear such as Commercial or Recreational Fisher crab traps that don’t belong to you, and this includes disturbing or lifting the crab traps or fish traps out of the water. Police are authorised to issue on the spot fine or the court may issue maximum fine up to $5500, Rural Crime Investigator Detective Senior Constable Reilly at Mid North Coast Police District said. Stealing fish / crab from Commercial set traps you do not own or set yourself is a criminal offence under Section 35 of Fisheries Management Act and those caught will be dealt with by the Courts. The offence is punishable by 6 months imprisonment or $2200 fine (or both) and if caught a second time the offence is 12 months imprisonment, and the fine is doubled. Detective Reilly said. On Wednesday 14 October 2020, the Commercial Fisher set a number of their fish/crab traps at the Stewarts River entrance in Watson Taylor Lake. All traps had relevant informant inscribed on attached buoy and trap. On Thursday 15 October 2020, a 46-year-old male from North Haven was captured on a surveillance camera traveling solo in an unregistered boat and interfering with one of the Commercial Fishers traps and illegally taking fish from the trap to use for his own crab traps. On Thursday 29 October 2020, Mid North Coast Rural Crime Investigator attended a North Haven home and seized 4 firearms and ammunition for noncompliance of firearms safe storage. At this time the 46-year-old-male was issued a Court Attendance Notice to appear at Port Macquarie Local Court on the 16 December 2020 for offences - - Master operate unregistered vessel - Interfere with set fishing gear without reasonable excuse - Possess fish illegally taken from set fishing gear, - Recreational fisher fails to pay fishing fee - Not keep firearm safely - Holder of Category A or B licence does not have approved storage We are committed to preventing, disrupting and reducing fisheries offences on our coastal and inland waterways. Police are reminding firearms owners about their obligations with safe storage as Operation Armour continues across NSW. Operation Armour focuses on preventing, disrupting and reducing firearm thefts, with the Rural Crime Prevention Teams conducting safe-storage inspections and compliance checks. The 46-year-old-male's firearms licence has been suspended. Officers from the Rural Crime Prevention Team will continue to conduct regular safe storage inspections across the state. Zero tolerance will be taken regarding any safe storage firearm breach. State Rural Crime Coordinator Detective Chief Inspector Cameron Whiteside reinforced that surveillance cameras are a great way to detect and deter offenders, whether that is on the land or water. "With very little effort you can target harden your valuable property, belongings and livelihood." Detective Whiteside said.
