18.01.2022 *UPDATED 21/08/2020* The coronavirus (COVID-19) has the potential to do great harm to the Kimberley’s 221 remote Aboriginal communities. Aboriginal people livin...g in remote areas are more at risk of serious illness from the coronavirus than other people. If the coronavirus gets into an Aboriginal community, it is likely to spread quickly and make residents very sick. To help protect our Aboriginal communities, there are strict travel restrictions in place. Tourists and travellers are not allowed to enter any remote Aboriginal community in Western Australia. Fines of up to $50,000 may apply to anyone who breaches the restrictions. Only some Aboriginal communities are excluded from the restrictions. In the Kimberley, the following Aboriginal community amenities are currently open to tourists and travellers: Dampier Peninsula, West Kimberley - Burrguk (entire community) - Djarindjin roadhouse - Dampier Peninsula police station - Djarindjin airstrip (private airstrip) - Embulgun (entire community) - Gnylmarung (entire community) - Googar Goonyool (entire community) - Goombaragin (entire community) - Gumbarnun (entire community) - Lombadina (entire community) West Kimberley - Imintji campground - Imintji store - Imintji arts centre - Mimbi visitor access road - Mimbi visitor reception building - Mowanjum Aboriginal Art and Culture Centre East Kimberley - Violet Valley campground in Baulu-Wah - Carranya (entire community) - Wuggubun (entire community) - Doon Doon (Woolah) caravan park - Doon Doon (Woolah) roadhouse Before going to a remote Aboriginal community that is open, tourists and travellers should contact the community to find out whether it has its own entry requirements. All other remote Aboriginal communities in the Kimberley and their amenities are closed to tourists and travellers. Native title holders have cancelled Canning Stock Route permits, and all remote Aboriginal communities and their amenities along the route are closed to tourists and travellers. Please travel responsibly help keep our Aboriginal communities safe. For more information, call 13 COVID (13 268 43) or visit wa.gov.au

06.01.2022 A woman that needs no introduction around here: Rebecca Sampi or fondly known to guests as #bunglebunglebec Bec is a Gija/wola woman who was born and raised in... the East Kimberley. She is also our head guide for Purnululu and sings the ancient song lines for the area. We are so lucky to have Bec guiding Kingfisher guests in the Bungles, it’s such an enriching experience. During covid Bec has been developing her own business ‘Garinbar Products’. She has worked in Purnululu with a professional to learn how to extract local bush medicines and infuse them into soaps, facial mists and moisturisers. We have been delighted to get to trial run these products and they are so lush! This incredibly talented woman is also taking on tourism trainees next year and we are stoked to have young Gija people working in the business and soaking up the knowledge and expertise from Bec. Look out for Bec, Rosie and Nev at the Global Eco Tourism conference in Margaret River this December if you get the chance! #naidocweek

02.01.2022 This morning I can now announce our next cautious and safe step as part of WA's controlled interstate border. Subject to no further outbreaks occurring and base...d on updated Chief Health Officer advice, Victoria and New South Wales will be classified as 'very low risk' states from 12.01am, Tuesday, December 8. The transition to the new category can occur, following a review by our Chief Health Officer after Victoria surpassed 28 days of no community cases and New South Wales is due to reach that milestone this Friday. As a result, WA's controlled interstate border will be safely adjusted, with travel from Victoria and New South Wales to be permitted into WA with the following conditions: - all Perth Airport arrivals to undergo a health screening and temperature test on arrival - travellers to be prepared to take a COVID-19 test at the airport COVID clinic, if deemed necessary by a health clinician (voluntary asymptomatic testing available for all airport arrivals) - completion of a G2G Pass declaration, stipulating they do not have any COVID-19 symptoms and which jurisdictions the traveller has been in over the previous 14 days - all travellers to receive a SMS health check reminder one week into their stay in WA - all land arrivals to be met at the border checkpoint, for a health screening and to have their G2G Pass declaration checked. Other jurisdictions currently in the ‘very low risk’ category include the Australian Capital Territory, Queensland, Northern Territory and Tasmania. The significantly improved situation in Victoria and New South Wales has been fantastic news for all Australians, and now it means that we can take this cautious next step. However, at this stage, South Australia will remain classified as a ‘medium risk’ jurisdiction. This classification will be reviewed again by December 11. Travel from South Australia remains prohibited unless travellers meet strict exemption criteria. Exempt travellers must also self-quarantine for 14 days upon arrival in Western Australia. Please note that those conditions apply to anyone who has been in South Australia in the previous 14 days. This also includes transit through South Australia, via road or air. Like always, we’re continuing to follow our State’s expert health advice. Our border controls have worked and allowed us to stay safe and return to a new normal throughout this pandemic, to get our economy going and people back in work. Thank you to everyone for your patience and understanding during this extremely difficult time. I know it's been a long wait, and I'm so glad we can now safely allow more of our friends and family over east to travel into WA. Our careful and cautious approach has kept our State safe and strong and we will continue to take that approach going forward.
