07.01.2022 Watt Street, located in Newcastle East, is Newcastle's oldest street and has history that far pre-dates European settlement when it was used as a track by the Awabakal people to move from the water to the top of a sandy hill. Much later (in the early 1800s) it was called Watt Street, after James Watt - a steam engine pioneer. Then later again (in 1859) it became one of the key streets in the city featuring government offices, commercial and religious buildings, hospitals and ...schools.
