18.01.2022 Today is #ThrowbackThursday! Many of you will be familiar with our beautiful Post Office building on Fitzgerald Street, but did you know that the original post office was on Wellington Street? In 1873, Thomas Wilding was subcontracted by George Throssell to build the towns first official permanent Post Office on the corner of Wellington and Hawes St, at that time a main thoroughfare. Prior to this, postal services were conducted from private residences. With the building of... the new Post Office in 1909, the land and buildings were transferred to the Dept of Defence and the old Post Office became the training centre for the 28th Infantry Battalion and the Drill hall for the Army Reserve. The building was used by the Army until 1976. AVAS renovated the buildings and planted gardens between the Post Office and the Old Girls School, and used the building as gallery space until it was eventually renovated and used as what we now know as the Northam Family Practice. 08.01.2022 UPDATE: Due to the ongoing and uncertain development of the COVID situation, and its effect on international and interstate travel, we have been in regular disc...ussion with the relavent controlling authorites regarding the 5th FAI Womens World Hot Air Ballooning Championship, scheduled for Northam in Aug/Sept 2021. As a result we have been advised that postponement to Aug/Sept 2023 has been approved. NBE will continue to work to deliver the planned World Championship event in 2023, but also hopes to be able to deliver an interim ballooning event for Australian competitors at Northam. 04.01.2022 A M O K | I S L A N D Day 6: Today is Xander Rood's aka Amok Island's last day in Northam and the Shire of Northam sincerely thanks him for creating the mural on the historic Flour Mill. We said on Day 1 it was going to be spectacular and it certainly is! Xander shared with us that he has enjoyed discovering more about the history of the swans over the past week, and said he was honoured to have been able to paint them given how special they are and how much they mean to the ...community. We hope everyone has enjoyed following Xander's progress while creating the mural (he also mentioned quite a few of you stopped by for a chat), and we believe it is a beautiful addition to Northam's and Australia's public (silo) art trail.
