08.01.2022 HAVE YOU EVER ATTEMPTED THE GREAT SOUTH WEST WALK? The Great South West Walk is a 252 kilometer loop which takes nine to 14 days to complete, passing along the ...coast around Portland, through Discovery Bay, Cape Bridgewater, Nelson, and the Cobboboonee Forest. For those looking to take on all or part of this challenge, you’ll be pleased to know a new guide book will make it a bit easier to plan and prepare. Jen Johns is the President of the Friends of the Great South West Walk, and as she says we have had some small booklets available, but this is the first full length guide book that’s been published. The guide book gives you information about the geology, plants (there are 950 plant species along the walk apparently), and animals you might see while walking through the various sections. The guide book also gives prospective walkers valuable information about what to consider before doing the walk, and how to book the campsites which are located along the way if you’re planning to be out for a few days. Some sections are quite remote, but as Jen says it’s well signposted with arrows and marker points, and Parks Victoria recently put in nearly 100 GPS waypoints. Last year there were over 3,000 camp site visitors along the walk mostly Victorians although the walk does attract people nationally and internationally. The guide book is available through information centres and local shops in Portland. (Photo by Sarah Sharp)
