24.01.2022 Delving into some video now, while I continue my focus on Jane Magon this week. This stunning ring, Ruby Tuesday, features a rare Burmese ruby within a setting of 12 pear shape diamonds. A beautiful and challenging piece to photograph, this video was shot in an outdoor setting, using natural sunlight to bring out the ruby's depth of colour, and add the sparkle that's so difficult to capture in a still image. 24.01.2022 Shedding light on another artist this week, this time it's local jewellery artist, Bridgette Shepherd. Pictured is a set of brooches from her portrait series, which incorporates charred wood and polished silver, creating a strong contrast of tone and textures. These pieces feature abstract human forms, with inspiration taken from old family photographs, and represents a family group - children, parents and grandparents. When photographing these, the placement of the pieces was important to establish the family ties within the group - the group of children in the middle with parents either side, and grandparents at either end. 23.01.2022 Getting into week 7 of my focus on local artists and designers, as a show of support for the Arts industry during pandemic times. This week's jewellery artist is Andy Lowrie, now based in the US. I've photographed a lot of Andy's work over the years, so it's very hard to choose where to start, but couldn't go past this brooch from his 'Sentinels and Spectres' series, which is one of my faves. I love the textures created on the worked copper surfaces of these works, giving it an industrial edge in contrast with the delicate form of a moth. 21.01.2022 Another original and unique piece of jewellery from Jane Magon, this necklace, entitled Nature and Life: Survival, Religion and Art, combines an eclectic mix of rare items, including a fossil, an obsidian arrow head, a mother-of-pearl flower and a Chinese lacquer bead. The combination of elements conveys a narrative journey, from prehistoric origins and tribal life through to the emergence of culture and religion. 20.01.2022 Another of my favourite works by Andy Lowrie, a collection of shadow puppet pieces that double as jewellery. One of the things I enjoy about photographing creative works is I never quite know what I’m going to get, and these pieces were a wonderful surprise and a delight to photograph! I had a great time playing around with arrangements and combinations on these, creating narratives out of the placement of pieces. For lighting, I incorporated backlighting for a connection to ...a shadow puppet theatre. I enjoy the melancholic nature of these sad, isolated body parts, inert and dormant, waiting for a puppeteer to give them life and purpose. 20.01.2022 I’ve just acquired a spanking new 360 camera to change things up a notch for Covid times, now I’m having fun dodging around corners and playing hide and seek on the job! Here’s a VR tour I’ve just completed for one of my favourite real estate clients, the lovely Rajen from House! https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=mGLvNZnBhmk

19.01.2022 Here's another in the Contours series by Bridgette Shepherd, who is this week's artist in residence. This photo features a brooch and 2 sets of earrings, which were among the first works photographed for her. Here's the artist's own description of the work: The series of work, Contours, was developed in response to the call out by Ombre Gallery for an exhibition, GLOSSY. Contours examines the integral function of the body as an object for personal and artistic expression. ...It highlights adornment as a symbolic act signifying the interconnected relationship between the body and self as well as the representation of the self to the other. Within this construct, the ‘glossy’ serves as a stylish stimulus for manifesting one’s identity. The simplified silhouettes of this series emanate from the influential body language of cover models poses. Curvatures in the metal not only accentuate the contours of the body, which we aim to adorn, but also the turning of the page. With each new season, the action of flipping through magazines embodies the hopeful potential to reimagine one’s image and self a fresh page, a fresh start. 18.01.2022 Another in the series of photographs focussing on the work of Bridgette Shepherd, is a selection of earrings from her Contours series. Inspired by the human form, these pieces use a combination of elements to create an abstracted view of the body, replicating the curves and contours of the body in silhouette, and tapping into associations connected with body language, pose and fashion. In these pieces, I enjoy the contrast created by the use of pearls, with their connection to wealth, prestige and high fashion, paired with tarnished metal surfaces, the polar opposite. 18.01.2022 Concluding this week's focus on jewellery designer Bridgette Shepherd, here's a portrait of the artist modelling a pair of her own earring designs from the Contours series. Now is a great time to support local artists and designers in our community, they help make our world a more interesting and beautiful place to live. 17.01.2022 Another piece by Andy Lowrie today, this brooch is part of a series inspired by grasses, and explores the interplay between man-made vs nature with thin strips of silver combined together to create grass-like forms. The low key treatment and gentle lighting is reminiscent of moonlight playing over a landscape, adding some mood and intrigue to the image. 14.01.2022 In the field today flight testing the drone. Nice day for it!

09.01.2022 For a behind the scenes look into what goes into designing custom jewellery, here's a still life laying out a selection of Jane Magon's designs. From drawings, through to gem selection and final jewellery pieces, this outlays the creative process and vision involved in producing some of Jane's fine pieces. I always enjoy hearing the backstory when chatting to artists and designers about their work, and seeing the work in progress behind the pieces breathes live into them, a reminder that this tangible object was once a figment of the imagination. 06.01.2022 Time for a bit of bling! and sophistication as I showcase jewellery designer Jane Magon this week. Jane's beautiful pieces are characterised by their use of precious and semi-precious gemstones, arranged to perfection in combinations of hues, styles and cuts which draw inspiration from Jane's life journeys. This piece, the Life and Joy ring, is unique, and contrasts orange sapphires with the green cabochon cut beryl and Tsavorite garnets. 06.01.2022 Lucky last in this week's focus on Jane Magon's collections, is another special piece entitled 'Origins: Earth, Fossils, Culture'. This necklace combines a range of rare and precious items from across Earth's history, including a dinosaur tooth, fossil, mother-of-pearl carved flower and carved, Chinese lacquer. A collection of precious and semi-precious gemstones adorn the individual pieces, with garnets, citrines, zircons adding a sparkle of colour. You can see more of Jane's collection at www.janemagon.com and www.1stdibs.com, or follow on Instagram @janemagoncollections #jewellery #jewelleryphotography #janemagoncollections #1stdibs #studiophotography #gemstones #jewellerydesign

06.01.2022 Continuing my focus on the works of Bridgette Shepherd, today's image is a set of 3 brooches from her Reminiscence series. One of the things I enjoy about photographing the works of artists and designers is their attention to texture, tone and form, and the technical challenges this can create in terms of lighting. In the case of these brooches, which contrast the dark, textured surface of charred wood, with the smooth, shiny surface of polished silver, both tones are at the ...extremes of the camera's dynamic range. To showcase each of these features successfully, the quality, angle and intensity of light has to be carefully controlled to maintain detail in both areas, highlighting the cracked texture of the wood, and maintaining clean reflections in the silver.
