20.01.2022 It’s almost time to switch from my normal anxiety to my festive Christmas anxiety! A time meant to be joyful - it can often leaving us feeling under pressure, short on time, and high in self-criticism. Here’s some tips for a more mindful festive season;... 1. Block out time in your diary NOW for your sadhana (personal practice). Whether that’s yoga, reading, bush walks, or art, continue to nurture your Self in small manageable blocks. If you can’t get to class, roll out your towel on the lawn, crank up the tunes, and roll through a few rounds of Surya Namaskar before returning to the To Do list (or join one of our 20 minute online classes on Namastream!) 2. Practice saying no. Or offer an alternative. No is hard but honoured boundaries feel divine. If you haven’t really seen someone all year and they want to catch up before Christmas? Just postpone it till January. Is a bourgeois restaurant dinner on the cards with family? Suggest a pot luck picnic at the park instead. 3. Presence > Presents. Consider giving experiences over things; a service that you offer, a gift of quality time with you, babysitting vouchers, or a more formal experience that can improve someone’s quality of life without leaving them with more stuff. 4. Practice socialising sans alcohol. This is not to say you can’t enjoy the but consider your relationship between Christmas get-togethers & foggy-headed mornings (not to mention that hangover-anxiety). At Christmas time these gatherings seem to roll into one so schedule some AFD’s! 5. Explore non-judgement - this is a time when family can feel most trying, as different personalities & values come together in a melting pot of functions, liquor, and discussions on everything from career to environment to politics! Non judgement is an art form and takes some practice (I’m still practicing!) but it reminds us that we weren’t born with the same social dynamic or upbringing, nor have we faced the same challenges or been educated the same way and while we won’t always agree with an opinion, we CAN respect it. And if your own can’t be respected... exercise your boundaries. 6. Finally, always drink more water than you think you need!

18.01.2022 We dont teach yoga for real bodies. We dont teach yoga for real people. And this language, frankly, has gotta go.... NEWFLASH: EVERY body is a real body. Whether its injured or flexible, strong or beginner, gender irrelevant. Nothing is imagined, nothing is fictitious, and if youre a teacher and you design classes for real bodies, congratulations, your students aint spirits teleporting in from an astral realm. They have skin and bones! Should we tell students with dance or gymnastics backgrounds, or those without old injuries, or those with lifelong practices and strong bodies, or those with a deep spiritual bhakti layer to their practice, that they (or their bodies) arent real? I get what is trying to be said... that a practice is inclusive - (although often that means able-bodied inclusive). Or we cater to variances in body types and ages, or we serve an older community, or that classes are philosophy-free, or chanting-free, but please stop saying you teach yoga for real people (or real bodies). Our 60 year old student with bursitis is real, our 22 year old ex-ballerina student is real, our post-partum mother is real, our spiritual yogis are real. And yes, at VBY we offer different styles of classes in a group fitness environment to suit where youre at - especially if you love to move to music and dont resonate with a hyper traditional / silent practice, but we dont ever suggest we teach yoga for real people. Can we leave that in the 2000s with the real women rhetoric, ploise? Want a class with fire and strength because you want to build your core? We got you. She first came to yoga in 2014 whilst studying at Loughborough University searching for a way to destress and reconnect with her body during her final year; she tried pole fitness, running, and eventually stumbled in on a Yoga class. Tara enjoys the fun and playful side yoga brings as well as the mind, body connec...tion. Tara teaches a grounded but strong yoga class, with a focus on healthy alignment remembering it’s not about how we look, but how we feel. She likes to challenge her students in a supportive way, creating space for them to grow their personal practice. As a teacher she also wants to inspire her students to love their bodies and enjoy "fitness" again! 14.01.2022 Hello I’m Gill, Im a business owner, jeweller, and artist, and I also go by Gill The scottish terrier - I’m a standup comedian. Strangely enough I took up yoga the same time as I took up standup comedy. They’re really polar opposites, one is highly stress-inducing, bad for me, bad for neurosis and anxiety - the other is just the opposite of all that! When I took up comedy, I found that I was very stressed because its a stupid stressful hobby and I took up yoga because I thoug...ht it might help take away some of the pressure and anxiety. I’ve shirked the concept of anything spiritual or yoga-esque for 53 years because I was always very high-paced. I ran, played tennis, and even boxed competitively, and I never quite GOT the slowing down concept. But I was being forced to, by my knees. My surgeon said to me if you don’t stop running, eventually you won’t be able to walk, and I suppose it was such a shock to me and really went into grief about it. I never thought I’d get any level of fitness back again. So I was kind of forced into yoga through this narrow window of opportunity to stay moving. I saw the adverts for Vital Beat, and I like music and I thought I’d be bored by yoga unless it had music so I came along to try. I found everyone super friendly, and it wasn’t as twatty as I thought it would be! Even some of the really spiritual stuff, even Amanda’s classes I really love, I find myself being quite moved by it and find that quite shocking actually! I never thought I’d be moved by this, that my concrete heart could be cracked! And then you moved locations and I thought oh I just got used to that! But this space is even nicer. I think its a nice balance here, there’s lots of class variety and it’s inexpensive, and it’s close to my house! My favourite poses are corpse (savasana) and waterfall, they’re pretty close to the same thing! Honestly, its helped me reclaim a modicum of the pride I used to have in my body, prior to stuffing up my knees and being immobile for quite some time. And even though I struggle through some of the poses with my knees, I can always adapt. I can’t do everything, but you don’t have to do it all, to get the most out of yoga. It’s kinder for my body, and it’s good for a middle aged body. I think its been great for me, and I think its great for women of my age because its kind, its gentle, and it will have greater effect. It's taken away flabbiness in parts of me that other things didn’t really do, especially the upper arm stuff. Those endless chaturangas, which I hated but now I see its amazing how you can evolve and take years off your body. This balances out my very hectic life if you have a stressful life you should do yoga, if you’re stiff you should do yoga, you know if you bloody BREATHE you should do yoga. And if you do standup comedy you ABSOLUTELY SHOULD do yoga. #humansofVitalBeat #hovb

09.01.2022 My name is Donna and I have 3 adult children, and work in an Accounts Department sitting all day, hence the need to do yoga! I’m naturally inflexible, and if you do other exercise like I do (I also go to the gym) you need the flexibility so you don’t hurt yourself and exercise is harder to do if you’re inflexible! I started yoga to become flexible, but then it became more; it became a journey of rediscovering who I am - after leaving a relationship after 30 years, I really ha...d no idea who I was. Us women give ourselves to lots of things; you become someones wife and someones mother, I was never just Donna. I'm also a qualified yoga teacher, having just graduated. I find the body and movement sooo interesting Yoga strengthens you, I went for a walk in the national park the other day and it was steep and I thought, 'I can do this! Im strong!' A couple of women even said to me are you hiking alone!?. I had a lot of knee pain and thats all gone, I once couldn’t even sit cross-legged on the floor. But I’ve realised how hip mobility can really really help knee pain. Even the philosophy I really enjoy, and that journey including my yoga teacher training is still a journey and its still coming out in me as I find my authentic teaching voice. I wanted to do my teacher training, and so I was looking around and then I came here to do some classes because of your Intro Offer, and realised how little I knew! So I started practicing here regularly. I like it here, it’s really fun and sometimes yoga can be too serious, I’m the one who likes to laugh in class and I like that it’s ok to do that. Maybe serious is just how people think it should be? I had a friend who said once the instructor swore? and I was like, yeah thats the yoga for me, it’s really approachable and genuine. I teach yoga at home every week with my friends we have a little class and its great. My favourite pose is frog pose (mandukhasana) and I really enjoy that release. I just want to tell people that they should start, they should just do it and if you think you’re too inflexible, then you need to be here even more. People say I cant touch my toes" and I tell them, 'neither can I! But I can teach it!'. And honestly if you just look at the 8 limbs of yoga, the whole worlds problems could be solved if everyone followed the 8 limbs! Yoga is the answer to everything. 07.01.2022 Let’s talk about: yoga as a spiritual practice. Here at the studios we welcome you whether you’re here to explore philosophy & self enquiry, or you’re here for your tight hammies. But we cannot deny that the root of yoga is a lifelong spiritual practice (that happens to include asana.)... We have, at our disposal, this powerful suite of tools in our yogic toolkit, and yet when the shit hits the proverbial fan, rather than lean INTO our practice to really ground us, we see our spiritual practice as an auxiliary thing - or a luxury. Something that we’ll get to later if we have the time. We focus first on the outside action... what do I need to DO to overcome this, or effect change.... before we initiate the inside action of who do I need to BE to overcome this or effect change. But there is a symbiosis between external action or activism, and our spiritual practice. We know, for example, that meditating in nature is GREAT for our internal state around exam time, but we also need to STUDY our notes in order to pass. But that our study IS more effective if we come from a place of calm and presence rather than fear and anxiety. So if external action is the leap, then our spiritual practice is both our springboard and our landing pad. It’s where we lead from and also where we come back to. And to stretch this analogy further, would you ever leap without knowing where to land?! I think a lot of the social activism we’ve seen the last 9 months hasn’t had this foundation. It’s underpinned by fear, lack, anxiety, and Us vs Them mentality. There’s been incredible action yes! But nowhere to land, and so we have this groundswell of disenfranchisement. Yoga reminds you to come home first, build your foundations, your roots, and your landing pad.... and then? THEN go and change the world.
