23.01.2022 TRAUMA RESPONSES You have probably heard the expression "fight or flight" when talking about traumatic experiences or panic attacks, but what... we don't hear of as often is the third possible reaction - freeze. These reactions are automatic and occur when we are in survival mode during a stressful or traumatic event. They stem from signals from the base of our brains which are the primitive or older parts of our brain, having evolved many thousands of years ago. If a person experiences the "fight" response, they are prepared to take on the situation, stay aware, focused and in the presence of the stimulus. On the other hand, "flight" triggers a response to escape or run away from the situation. You might have experienced this with an urge to run, flee or get as far away as possible from the situation. Freeze is a third response that can occur just as frequently. This is when the body may become immobile, thoughts and emotions feel distant and a dissociative state ensues. There could also be a feeling of being stuck or frozen to the ground, not being able to react in any way to the situation. These responses sound uncomfortable, and they are, and are common responses experienced by people who have had traumatic events or during a panic attack. The good news is that you can learn to shift between these responses to a healthy and productive (and less icky) response to triggers and panic attacks. #trauma #ptsd #anxiety #panicattacks #flightfrightfreeze #psychology #traumaticreactions #anxietydisorders #brain #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #onlinetherapy #posttraumaticstress #mentalillness #traumaexperiences #mindhealth #psychologyinfo See more

22.01.2022 Its mid-week and your probably starting to feel a little stressed. Today we offer a simple visual to help identify stress, and also some solutions to help reduce stress...

21.01.2022 A recent ministerial announcement from the South Australian Government who are piloting surveillance in Residential Care or Nursing Homes provides, at face value, some comfort for vulnerable older people and their families, however, the following quote does raise concerns regarding privacy: The Care Protect technology can allow for personalised access rights, so different people can view different cameras. Relatives of residents, a unit manager, through to senior staff respo...nsible for a group of units would only be able to monitor footage within a clear framework, Minister Wade said. What we sometimes forget is that the residential facilities are homes, just like a home we all live in. Would you like surveillance in your home, your bedroom. There are also particular concerns for people with dementia who do not have the capacity to provide informed consent. A different approach can be used to tackle this issue of abuse, which ultimately requires strong and transparent leadership. Are the right people being recruited for the job? Are staff provided with appropriate training, coaching, mentoring and support? Is organisational culture encouraging whistleblowing and a zero-tolerance approach to dealing with issues as they arise? 21.01.2022 Happy Valentines Day to all, a day we can celebrate not only romantic love, but also connectedness with others, and our own self-worth.

20.01.2022 Are you feeling insecure in your current job? Have you been recently stood down? Have you been made redundant? The COVID-19 pandemic has presented us with global health challenges not seen before in our generation, and with the community restrictions required to contain the virus, a flow on effect on employment and job security. Job keeper and Job seeker have brought relief for some, however, future job security is not addressed by these schemes. Now is the time for you to pr...o-actively consider your future employment and put together your goals and plan for the years to come. Now is a good opportunity to reflect on your skills and experience, job prospects, transferable skills and training and education that can help you to survive the pandemic and achieve stability and success into the future. Many training institutions have been funded to provide free or low cost training, so Now is the time to think about re-training or up-skilling for the future. The Vital Health & Wellbeing Centre can walk alongside you and help you on this journey. Our Careers Coaching is a low cost and affordable service, where you will be allocated with an experienced coach to help you develop your careers plan; identify opportunities to aid you in achieving your goals; assist with CV and interview preparation; and, most importantly, support you as an individual to work through any stress and anxiety that you may be experience. 20.01.2022 POSITIVE SELF-TALK FOR ANXIETY For those that suffer with worry, anxiety or panic attacks, you probably feel like you are in a constant battle with your own min...d. Forever trying to convince yourself that everything is ok or trying to rationalise totally irrational thoughts. Rather than going back and forward with dialogue in your mind, focus on a self-talk statement. Repeat it to yourself over and over again (until you believe it!) and incorporate it into your mindfulness practice. Its important to choose something that is meaningful to you. Above are some suggestions but you can make up anything that resonates with you. Make sure it is simple, to the point and meaningful. #positiveselftalk #anxiety #panicattacks #worry #mentalhealth #mentalhealthstrategies #mindfulness #mindful #affirmations #psychology #anxietyhelp

19.01.2022 Wellbeing is about spending time and devoting attention to all the domains of life, including the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual domains. A simple concept, but not always easily achievable, or is it? Lets look at some life scenarios 1. Im ambitious and want career progression, my identity very much about who I am at work. This gets me stuck in the professional with less time for family, leaves me stressed impacting my mental health, and not time for a socia...l life. 2. I do everything for my family. I put my needs aside to care for others and although everyone appreciates my efforts, I feel stretched, and stressed, and have lost my identity. My social life is making sure others have a social life and tagging along. 3. Im stuck in the financial. I have to keep earning and search to make the extra bucks to keep up with my mortgage and expenses. I have less time for my family even though all I do is for my family. My physical health is suffering as Im overworked and dont take a break. 4. I have work, family, I study. There seems to be no time for physical exercise, hobbies, spirituality. 5. Community...whats community? How do I fit that in? Do any any of these scenarios resonate with you? You may wish to share some of your scenarios. We will soon look at the various tools and approaches we can use to achieve optimum wellbeing....coming soon. See more

03.01.2022 Today is World Mental Health Day. The Australian Bureau of Statistics conducted a National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing in 2007 and found that one in five (20.0%) of Australians aged 16-85 years experienced mental disorders in the previous 12 months. This is equivalent to almost 3.2 million Australians. The most recent ABS National Health Survey estimated there were 4.8 million Australians (20.1 per cent) with a mental or behavioural condition in 201718. On this World Mental Health Day lets make sure we see the one in five; we support the one in five; we connect with the one in five; and work together to keep Mental Health on the national agenda! #worldsmentalhealthday #mentalhealthawareness #healthandwellness #support #strongertogether
