06.01.2022 General Practice - further de-funding by the Federal Government In another demoralising attack on General Practice by the Federal Government, from the 1st of August 2020 GPs will no longer be able to claim a Medicare rebate to analyse and report ECGs. This lifesaving feature of GP care is now being de-funded. Despite 6 or more years at University and 5 or more years of postgraduate training and rigorous examination standards the Federal Government has relegated GPs and our n...urses to the role of technicians. There is now only a much reduced rebate for GPs to perform an ECG, but not analyse it. There is no point performing an ECG if you don't analyse it. Ironically, a psychiatrist or orthopaedic surgeon with far less training in ECGs will be able to access a Medicare rebate for reporting an ECG. The Government, or perhaps more accurately its Department, seems to have missed the evolution of General Practice and that GPs are now Specialist qualification Generalists one of the most important segments of an efficient and functioning healthcare system. In practice this means the Medicare rebate available to YOU will be reduced and the out of pocket expense will be greater. In bulk billing practices this means patients will either need to be billed privately for the ECG, sent to Emergency department to do ECG or referred to a specialist and incur the associated out of pocket costs for this. This hamfisted policy initiative, along with GPs being the only health professional forced to accept the bulk billing rebate for telehealth shows that the Federal government has a strategic plan to gradually defund General Practice and pass those costs onto patients. IF this makes you half as angry as we are, please talk or write to your Federal MP. The local Federal MP for Cook is Scott Morrison and Craig Kelly is the Federal MP for the Hughes electorate.
