20.01.2022 You would think that with the warm weather in Australia, it would not be common to see Vitamin D deficiencies. In actual fact it is one of the most common deficiencies. Due to the busy lives we all lead, its common to have low vitamin D levels, as we dont get out enough in the sun. Vitamin D is absorbed into our skin through rays of light, it is responsible for so many processes in our body, such as immune system health, insulin sensitivity, body composition, bone health ...and supports a healthy mood. Vitamin D levels can be naturally increased by: 15 minutes of sunlight per day Drink plenty of water Eat healthy fats Supplement regularly with a quality vitamin D
17.01.2022 Cortisol is regularly used as a term in the health/medical industry. But what does the term cortisol mean? Cortisol is our stress hormone. Cortisol is produced from the adrenal glands. When our central nervous systems becomes alert and ready to take on a challenge, our adrenal glands respond with the production of cortisol. This production of cortisol can assist us to get hard jobs done and stay focused on the task ahead, but too much cortisol can prove to stress the body to ... an unhealthy state. We require cortisol, to deal with emotional stress and physical stress. Cortisol can over produce over time, when we put our bodies under constant stress. This stress can be from work or family pressures and physical pressures of illness and exercise. One of the most common complaints when people have high cortisol levels is not being able to sleep effectively at night. Certain things will trigger our cortisol levels to rise, such as caffeine and pre workouts. So the question is how do we maintain our cortisol levels at a healthy level? Reduce stress by managing lifestyle Find time everyday for grounding Structure your exercise routine around the cortisol curve Limit caffeine and stimulants Ensure an effective sleep routine Seek advice from experts on supplements and diet

10.01.2022 Functional Medicine aims to find the causes of disease, not to treat symptoms alone, by linking the bodies pathways. Functional Medicine Practitioners provide holistic care and personalised medicine through a different approach than Western Medicine. At Vitality Education we like to think of Functional Medicine as the why, not the what.
08.01.2022 How important is sleep and how can we improve it? Sleep is vital in maintaining homeostasis in our bodies, when we sleep our body rejuvenates for the next busy working day. Sleep is regulated in to a two part system. 1) Homeostatic regulation, which is our drive to sleep.... 2) Circadian regulation, which is our body clock that gives us cues to when its time to sleep. Melatonin is released when its dark, hence it acts as a cue to sleep. Ignore these cues, or constant changing sleeping habits over time interrupts our homeostatic regulation. Ensure you have a routine before going to sleep, this enables our body to adapt to sleep cues and respond appropriately. So how can we improve our Circadian rhythm? Download a blue light filter or switch your iPhone to Night Shift when using it in the evening. Turn off all electronics 30 minutes before bed. Dont use any of this equipment whilst in bed, instead have a warm shower and read a book. If you struggle with quality of sleep invest in this routine! Your biochemistry will thank you for it.
