23.01.2022 You can buy a lot with white privilege... Leading up to Fathers Day, I decided I couldn't bare to contribute to more landfill. This year Steven Kline Dale Kline... and I adopted David Kline a Mountain Gorilla. A Silverback (as we fondly call him) for the Silverback, I could think of nothing more fitting. This September there were no golf balls, just a PowerPoint presentation about the life of the mighty Silverback Mafunzo and his family. During my research I was sad to learn Mountain Gorillas are considered critically endangered, with only 1000 currently alive today. This added further chuff to my decision, to boycott consumerism and contribute to the continuation of these beautiful beings. As I was collecting information about Mafunzo, I made a friend called Modeste Twongere. Our common love for Mafunzo had bought us together. I went on to tell him that I was compiling a gift for my father and that our donation was allocated to protection and habitat preservation. As fate would have it Twongere, works at ground zero in Rwanda protecting Mafunzo and the rest of the Gorilla's. Over the last few months I have been relieved to know that the Gorilla's are thriving and safe from poachers. During this time I also learned Twongere has a wife and 3 children and part of his job requires him to be away from them for long periods at a time. I also learned from our chats that despite our similarity in age, our lives were vastly different. His job isn't an easy one, it requires him and his team to walk many miles and camp overnight in the wilderness and spend weeks away from their families. In return, they earn the equivalent income in 15 days of what I earn in 1 hour. I have never been to Rwanda or met Twongere in person but I'm awe of his contribution and grateful for his personal sacrifice, so we can live in a world with Mountain Gorillas like Mafunzo. Today people were asking me what I want for Christmas this year and my answer was nothing, I have everything I need. But that's not entirely true, what I desperately need is to feel inner peace. For me, that comes from knowing I did everything in my power to leave this world better than I found it. Tonight I unexpectedly sent Twongere and his family a Christmas gift. A drop in my ocean can cause a tidal wave in theirs, from halfway round the world. His gratitude was overwhelming but really the gratitude was all mine.
