18.01.2022 Today we will talk about selecting females. Sometimes some breeders have a tendency of selecting using only performance tests , EPD’s or just for phenotype. F...requently some females are bred to have too much power, and muscle becoming very masculine in their appearance. It is especially important to consider structure and breeding soundness. The ideal beef female is a combination of many factors. A Female should own characteristics that are: Long neck with a feminine head. A correct amount of muscle giving a lean appearance to the top of the shoulders. A broad chest and large spring of ribs, indicating adequate body capacity. A wide and long from hips to pins, and deep from the pins to the stifle joint, indicating calving ease. The widest portion of the fertile cow should be in the midrib. A fertile female will have a level top line as opposed to a high tail-head. The udder should be strongly attached with a level floor, and teats should be proportional to body size. I will include a paragraph of an article of Dr. Jan Bonsma that I really like. Functionally Efficient for the Future and...- He says: The whole object of judging livestock for functional efficiency is to get the livestock breeder vitally interested in his animals. I am all in favor of performance testing plus visual appraisal. The concept of judging for functional efficiency must be another aid in the making performance testing more efficient. We cannot breed livestock with computers alone. They can help us to locate the outstanding performers, but they cannot subject the animal to an objective visual appraisal. Man has not become a robot yet, and until such time computers should be used to assist us in interpreting data. But man must do the final judging and selection. Which reminds me of an appropriate quotation attributed to Ninon de l'Enclos: "That which is striking and beautiful is not always good; but that which is good is always beautiful." #mbjranch #brangus #redbrangus #brangusrojo #brahman

15.01.2022 So nice to see the grass growing and the land being productive. Sheds full!
13.01.2022 Nice to see other producers, who also, consider moderately framed breeders the most efficient! We focus on moderate frame size because the nutritional requirements of largerframed cows are so much greater, Kate said. There’s no doubt we’ve had a hunch that our bestperforming cows are the moderately framed cows, with the ability to lay down fat early, she said.... There’s a fallacy out there that biggerframed cows produce bigger calves and this must be more profitable, yet the research has shown the contrary. With the higher nutritional demand of biggerframed cows (given a set amount of resources available), not only do you have to run fewer of them, but they often wean smaller weights of offspring per hectare. https://www.mla.com.au//i/measure-of-success-in-the-mums/

05.01.2022 ALL SOLD NOW! Time to sell our commercial Auslines. We have available 10 commercial cows, mainly all first cross, with nearly all red heifer calves at foot! These cows are those that have produced my royal show carcass winning steers. They are super quiet. There are a couple of heifers as well plus one Awesome Bull. I bred this bull and he has produced some amazing progeny including most of my carcass comp winners. Unfortunately he has to go as much as I'd love to keep him. Photo taken today weighing 750kg. Pm if you would like a list.
04.01.2022 And so yesterday the last of our commercial cows left for their new home near Gympie. Hope they have as much success with them as I did and they continue to produce some really nice steers for their paddock to plate venture.
