We know all about the impact of green spaces on stressed out modern lives, but now scientists have been researching the effects of ‘blue space’ everything from the sea to rivers, lakes and even canals and water fountains. And the research is pretty conclusive; proximity to water especially the sea helps our physical and mental well-being. Not only do people near the sea have better general and mental health, they are more physicall...y active, and as well as being an environment with more sunlight and less polluted air, accessing coastlines is something which is enjoyed by all socioeconomic groups. Close contact with the forces of the natural world, be it anything from surfing to walking along a shoreline at low tide, connects us to the world around us, making us present and in the moment. This state of mind is thought to be an antidote to the negative and distressing thought processes which are an established factor in depression.
