25.01.2022 WICEN NSW Inc News for Sunday, 27 December 2020 WICEN NSW is a communications support squad of the NSW Volunteer Rescue Association. WICEN NSW will be conductin...g an informal Communications Exercise on the weekend of January 9-10, and invites amateur radio clubs across New South Wales and ACT to participate. WICEN will establish a base station at Little Bay, Sydney, with WICEN members across NSW setting up home or field stations as part of a wider exercise. Net control operators at Little Bay will monitor a number of frequencies, passing messages and accepting check-ins from WICEN members and other amateur radio operators. Contacts from the wider amateur radio community, throughout the course of the exercise, will be greatly appreciated as these will help increase traffic, and simulate more realistic workloads for the exercise net control operators. Further details, including frequencies, can be found on the WICEN NSW website. Members are asked to remain prepared for activation, as summer has traditionally been the time things have gone figuratively, or occasionally literally, wobbly. WICEN and the St. George Amateur Radio Society are jointly conducting a test, using a 70cm FM repeater at Mt. Bindo on the Great Dividing Range. VK2RAH is on 439.875 MHz, with the standard negative 5.0 MHz offset. No CTCSS tone is required or sent. Coverage appears to be very good, so "give it a go", and let [email protected] know your results. Members have been experimenting with WINLINK and JS8CALL to pass text messages, on Monday evenings, supported by a Google Meeting. WICEN has a weekly net, each Sunday evening. The main net is at 1800, and a secondary digital voice check-in net at 1830. [Morning script:] Today's uses the Chatswood 2 metre repeater, followed by the non-ham R52 TAC7 DMR system at Kurrajong. Members are also encouraged to take advantage of the free courses offered by OEM at: https://www.emtraining.nsw.gov.au/ WICEN hopes to be at the CCARC Field Day at Wyong on February 28, 2021. WICEN's website, including the COVID safety plan, contact form, and exercise details, is at: nsw.wicen.org.au Members are asked to regularly use their vrarescue.org email address. As of 1st January 2021 all WICEN emails will only be sent to the member's VRA email address. For Facebook users, there is an official WICEN NSW page; and an informal national WICEN group. WICEN ACT is part of the Canberra Region ARC. Their website is: www.crarc.org.au WICEN Victoria's weekly net is Tuesdays at 8:30 pm, on 3.6 MHz. The Baw-Baw Extreme is TBC for mid-April. Visit: vic.wicen.org.au Finally, WICEN wishes members and listeners a Happy Hogmanay and New Year. Submitted by Julian Sortland VK2YJS & AG6LE, on behalf of the WICEN State Management Committee.

25.01.2022 The WARS Contesting team entered into the Oceania DX CW contest over the past weekend. We had 9 operators (plus one quite young trainee who helped bag a QSO wit...h a Russian). We were able to get 350 QSOs (vs 227 last year) and claim 468224 points (vs 187136 in 2019). So a significant improvement in the end result for the team. Great work by everyone involved over the weekend plus by those who helped out with the build of the new tower and the installation of the antennas. Thanks to all. 24.01.2022 We have been advised by Scouts that they are intending to perform some significant repairs to the façade of the Scout Hall at Vickery Ave and as a result the premises will be unavailable for the club to use for any purpose. We will be relocating infrastructure to back up locations and for the time being the power has been tuned off to the club infrastructure that is located at Vickery Ave. We will advise further regarding timing when we have that information.

23.01.2022 From October 2019 to February 2020, communications operators of WICEN NSW a support squad of the NSW Volunteer Rescue Association Inc., served as radio operator...s and Incident Management Team staff in NSW RFS Fire Control Centres, established and maintained emergency radio networks where local communications infrastructure had been destroyed, served as operators on the NSW RFS Bushfire Information Line, and provided behind the scenes co-ordination of the broader NSW VRA response. Approximately 31 WICEN NSW VRA volunteers will be awarded the NSW Bushfire Emergency Citation by the NSW Premier in recognition of their dedication to service over the 2019-2020 bushfire emergency.

21.01.2022 October is contest month for the Waverley Amateur Radio Society! The club will be contesting from its DX and contest station in the NSW Southern Highlands for the October contest season, starting with the Oceania DX Contest. A fitting way to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the issue of the club's first radio license in August 1920.

20.01.2022 We will need to keep eye on this topic.
