25.01.2022 John Harris is known as ‘the rock’ of VMCH’s affordable homes community in Mentone. The retired butcher, aged 79, has lived in his affordable home for 13 years and says he loves it 110 per cent. Everyone here is lovely. Everyone feels safe; we all know each other. As new people come in, we make them feel welcome. ... Stage 4 restrictions and social isolation have hit many older people hard, particularly those living alone. But John says a strong community spirit and caring nature of his 20 neighbours has made all the difference during the COVID-19 pandemic. Being in a higher-risk group for the virus, John says he and his neighbours take their safety seriously, but they don’t let it get in the way of their mental health. "People are very good here doing the right thing. A few of us might sit out on a nice sunny day and have a cuppa with our masks on, one and a half metres away from each other, of course. We have this nice driveway and if we see someone struggling with their groceries, we can help. Everyone seems to be coping well. Even though we’re single, we’re not alone. VMCH provides affordable homes for around 400 people aged 55 and over at 21 locations across Melbourne. #affordablehomes #vmchaffordablehomes #affordablehousing #socialisolation #community #neighbours #weareallinthistogether
25.01.2022 Today is National Grandparents Day! We know many of our residents and clients are missing their grandchildren and great grandchildren. We asked some of our Shanagolden Retirement Village, Pakenham residents if they'd like to send a message to their youngest loved ones. John and Cobie can't wait to meet their newest great granddaughter Freya, Elaine is looking forward to some really big cuddles, and Kevin and Denise are really missing their 14 grandchildren and 8 great-grand...children. If you haven't had a chance to talk to your grandparents (or great grandparents) today - make sure you give them a call!
25.01.2022 Today is Ash Wednesday an important holy day in the liturgical calendar. Ash Wednesday opens Lent, which runs for forty days leading into the Easter Triduum (the three days from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday). Lent is one of the most significant liturgical seasons in the life of the Church, and is often symbolised by the use of the colour purple/violet. Lent is a time for personal cleansing and renewal. During Lent, people are encouraged to be attentive to prayer, almsgiving, fasting and forgiving. #lent #ashwednesday #eastertriduum

24.01.2022 Michele Toussaint’s mum, Alix, is 92 years old. She spends her days happily folding and putting away clothes, doing the dishes, enjoying some craft or gardening and listening to music. The only difference is that Alix has dementia, and she is doing all of this while living in the Memory Support Unit at St Catherine’s Aged Care Residence in Balwyn. [Image description: Two women are outside in the sunshine at St Catherine's Aged Care Residence. 22.01.2022 Nutrition is important no matter what age you are it’s just as important to get it right when you are aged 85 years as it is when you are in your teens. Living a healthy and active life is closely linked to a lifestyle that includes regular physical activity paired with wise food choices.
22.01.2022 The four weeks of Advent begin today! For those who aren’t familiar, Advent means ‘arrival’ or ‘coming’, and it prompts us to pause each day in December and remember why Jesus came at Christmas. Common ways of commemorating Jesus’ birth are through Advent calendars, wreaths, and candles. Each candle has a special colour and meaning. During the first week of Advent, we wait in hope (purple) for the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. #advent #adventcandles #adventwreath #hope

20.01.2022 Let's rock, everybody, let's rock, everybody in the whole cell block, was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock! Our residents and team at Willowbrooke Aged Care Residence, Upper Ferntree Gully had a fabulous day celebrating the birthday of rock and roll king, Elvis Presley. Not only was the lounge decorated to honour the king but the residents sang Happy Birthday, watched a movie and participated in an Elvis quiz!... We’d love to know what your favourite Elvis song is?

19.01.2022 I enjoy the variety of working as an OT, no day is the same. VMCH Occupational Therapist Anna Manoharan supports teenagers to older people accessing NDIS plans and Home Care Packages. On a typical day I could be assessing someone for a wheelchair and then teaching someone how to plan a weekly budget this variety also keeps me on my toes!... Today is World Occupational Therapy Day, and we’re honouring our great OTs who do such a fantastic job supporting people of all ages and abilities across our organisation! What's the one thing Anna would like people to know about the profession? I think in general it would be just to spread awareness of what we do and how we can help people of all ages and abilities. OT is still a relatively new concept to most people, however with the introduction of the NDIS, more people have access to therapy and I am finding that many people are becoming more aware of our role in disability space. I have found that occupational therapy is one of the most holistic health care professions and I am proud to have chosen this as my career path. 17.01.2022 It’s probably no surprise that one of the key community groups who often feel excluded are people who are homeless. We’re proud to offer affordable homes to older people across Melbourne who might otherwise have nowhere to live. John from our Mentone affordable homes community is one of our most loved residents. He goes out of his way to make sure his neighbours feel valued, supported and connected by sharing a cuppa, helping with groceries and organising train trips into the city. Thank you to lovely people like John who can be found in so many of our affordable homes communities. They’re fantastic places that really do provide so much more than just a roof over people’s heads. 17.01.2022 2020 has been a tough year but we are amazed at the generosity and positivity of the community that surrounds us. Our residents at Providence Retirement Village, Bacchus Marsh were the lucky receivers of 150 reusable face masks. Karen Pinder, a Bacchus Marsh local, wanted to do something to support the Moorabool community so she made 1000 face masks to distribute.... A huge shout out to Karen for being so thoughtful. Our residents are proudly wearing their face masks!
16.01.2022 Today is World Day of the Poor, which has been celebrated each year since 2017. When we refer to people who are poor in the Catholic Tradition, we are not only referring to people who are financially poor. It's a broad term which also includes people who are poor in spirit, poor in health, people who are isolated, vulnerable and marginalised. In his pastoral letter to recognise World Day of the Poor, Pope Francis calls on us to exude tenderness and hospitality through simp...le acts of love like a smile or offering assistance to a person in need. Generosity that supports the weak, consoles the afflicted, relieves suffering and restores dignity to those stripped of it, is a condition for a fully human life Pope Francis says. How do you plan to recognise World Day of the Poor today and brighten someone’s spirits? #worlddayofthepoor #actsofkindness #spreadkindness Catholic Social Services Victoria Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne
16.01.2022 First it was a Mexican fiesta, and now it's a boat party! Our residents at Wantirna Aged Care Residence sure know how to have a good time. All three of our balconies were converted into a pretend cruise ship, and our residents were able to experience that wonderful 'sea air'. Residents had some drinks and nibbles while having a boat quiz, a raffle, and a chat about the different cruises residents had been on over the years. ... Residents enjoyed the afternoon and said how great it was to be out in the nice weather, and on the open sea again! ;)
15.01.2022 Busting a move on the dance floor can be a lot of fun (even if you’ve got two left feet) and a new study has provided a compelling reason to keep doing it as we age. Researchers from the University of Zurich have found people who engage in dance-based activities are 37 per cent less likely to fall than people who do other type of exercises.
14.01.2022 If you know someone who requires aged care, Meaningful Ageing Australia's See Me Know Me campaign website has some excellent resources. If you are choosing the right aged care it’s important to find an organisation that will see beyond the surface and get to know who you are know what gives you purpose, know what you believe and know what connects you to life. 14.01.2022 We love AFL! And it’s not just us, our excited residents from Providence Aged Care Residence, Bacchus Marsh are also big fans!. They celebrated the lead up to the Grand Final with a BBQ lunch, footy themed word games and relived some of the AFL’s greatest moments. ... 13.01.2022 Today, Thursday 1 October is International Day of Older Persons. We are so blessed to be able to care for, support, and build relationships with many older people across our communities. Today, we acknowledge that there is much to be done still, to reduce the stigma around growing older. We will continue to play our part in ensuring that the older people who choose to live with us, be served by us, and be supported by us are treated with respect and dignity every day.... Please note: some of these images were taken prior to COVID restrictions.
13.01.2022 It's Malnutrition Week. Known as the 'hidden condition', malnutrition can be very dangerous and sometimes difficult to pick up. Good nutrition is so vital for many people we support here at VMCH, whether in aged care or disability services. 11.01.2022 It’s a really lovely friendship and I would imagine we’ll be friends forever. VMCH volunteer Susan calls Ann once a week for a chat as part of VMCH’s TeleFriend program, a free service which sees trained volunteers make weekly calls to more vulnerable or socially isolated people who access our services. This week is Social Inclusion Week, aimed to help all Australians to feel included and valued. ... Susan who volunteered at our Mountain Gate Op Shop before restrictions says calling Ann, who accesses our Carer Support Program, has become a highlight of her week. She’s just an absolutely lovely lady, we’ve developed a really nice repour, said Susan. We talk about all sorts of things, our families, what we’re watching on Netflix. Susan also helps Ann with her English language skills. Some of our (Australian) sayings are very odd, so Ann might hear something during the week and will ask me what it means when we chat. Ann said she appreciates Susan’s calls and believes they’ve struck up a one-of-a-kind friendship. Susan agrees: It’s not one way it’s win-win. I’ve told her if she ever needs me anytime, just to call me. If you are interested in becoming a TeleFriend volunteer, call Nadia on 0439 269 088 or [email protected]. 11.01.2022 The need for more affordable housing options will no doubt continue to be a huge societal issue in 2021. Plans have been completed and building work is expected to commence in the new few months. 10.01.2022 2020 is Jillian Bothe’s 40th year as an Occupational Therapist (OT). Soon someone will be referring me to the program as a client! Jillian jokes. Jillian is one of eight VMCH OTs working across our Allied Health and Early Childhood Intervention Service. She works with our Short-Term Restorative Care program in Victoria’s Grampians region, helping older people at risk of entering residential aged care to remain living at home. During COVID we have been very busy there... has probably never been a time when it is more important to support older people to remain at home. The consistent use of PPE has been a change and I have added the use of Telehealth (online support) to my toolbox!" Jillian says this World Occupational Therapy Day, she’d like people to understand how practical and diverse OT is. OT provides a very respectful framework as it always starts from the perspective of what is most important to the client. I always wanted a job working with people, and I gain real satisfaction from assisting others. Happy World Occupational Therapy Day to all the OTs out there you do an incredible job! To celebrate Shrove Tuesday, why not try a pancake breakfast (or dinner) with the whole family, and talk about what you could do for the Lenten season together. Need some pancake inspiration? 05.01.2022 ‘It takes a village’ is a proverb VMCH Occupational Therapist (OT) Maddi Holmstrom witnesses every day in her role. Maddi works with children at our Early Learning and Therapy service, supporting their fine and gross motor skills and emotional and sensory needs. What I love most about being an OT is working as part of a team with a common goal of supporting families and children. I love how we collaborate with so many different people from co-workers, teachers, parents and... carers. I highly enjoy the active role we have in supporting the development and learning in a creative and fun way for the children. Many families who come seeking support for their child with a disability or developmental delay are overwhelmed or confused. Maddi says their feedback to her support makes her job all the more worthwhile. Whether it is just providing a safe space for them to share what they are finding challenging and working together to develop strategies to better support their child. They really value the opportunity for their child to develop their skills and independence. Thank you to Maddi and all of our valued OTs across VMCH services we value your skill, compassion and drive to help improve the lives of the people we support. #worldOTday #reimaginedoing #occupationaltherapy #alliedhealth #earlychildhoodintervention #ot
